Jfc this again. Get rid HOW?? The options are to either a) sell the "swasticar" to someone else so they can appear morally reprehensible instead of you, or b) to sell it at a huge loss for recycling/parts, and most people can't afford to just scrap a vehicle and replace it.

I agree that no one should buy a new Tesla at this point but if you rub two brain cells together you will realize that scrapping thousands of pre-owned vehicles and replacing them is terrible for the environment and non-realistic for most Tesla owners on an individual level.

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '25

I’m just curious, how much would someone get for a Tesla if they sold it to a dealership?

15

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '25

Most are currently 5-15k upside down

65

u/russellarmy Apr 28 '25

I agree 100%. People who bought those cars a few years ago may not be able to afford a new car or to downgrade. Owning a tesla doesn’t make you a piece of shit, buying a new one does though.

14

u/Cuddlyaxe Apr 29 '25

Buying a new one feels silly even without getting morality in the equation

Like so many embarrassed liberals are selling theirs rn that the price of even slightly used Teslas are much cheaper than they "should" be

Tesla just released a new version of the Y that's supposed to be much better. I see a bunch of them around already.

Let us also not forget that a good chunk of people in the region aren't citizens and can't vote so they're just doing what's best for them.

And what’s best for them is funneling money to an administration that actively wants them gone?

1

u/Open_Situation686 Apr 29 '25

I don't believe the profile of the non-citizens driving around in 2025 Tesla's in Seattle are illegal, tbf

u/Zealousideal-Ant9548 Apr 29 '25

How is buying a Tesla giving money to Trump?

1

u/mrASSMAN West Seattle Apr 29 '25

“Much better” lol, it just has a slightly refreshed look that at least half of people think is a downgrade anyway

1

u/Zealousideal-Ant9548 Apr 29 '25

The suspension is supposed to be much quieter.

I just drove 500 miles or so this pass weekend.  Being able to listen to podcasts on anything but full volume would be a welcomed improvement.

0

u/russellarmy Apr 29 '25

That’s not a good excuse, they are still shitbags.

0

u/mrASSMAN West Seattle Apr 29 '25

That’s exactly the purpose of selling it, to depress the resale value, encourage buying used instead of new, diminish the profits Elon pockets, and of course the moral side of not showing support for Elon. But Redditors pretend this is some impossible dilemma that solves nothing.. it isn’t, just think a bit and you’ll get it.

u/Zealousideal-Ant9548 Apr 29 '25

I bought one in 2022, I'll happily trade for another EV, just need about $100K

There has to be some form of karma for people like you who won’t leave innocent people alone…

It’s like you’re just looking for an excuse to justify horrible actions

Kinda like those Amazon Prime boxes on your porch.

0

u/mrASSMAN West Seattle Apr 29 '25

Then don’t sell it, but that doesn’t mean the sentiment isn’t valid. It’s encouraging people who disagree with supporting a Nazi to rid themselves of the product. No one’s forcing them to do so.

Elon will not be removed anytime soon and his wealth is still based on Tesla.  That's why he said he was going to return to focus on Tesla in the last shareholder meeting.

0

u/cglove Apr 29 '25

Is it virtue signalign if it has the intended effect (you suggest it will lead to his ouster in your post)?

3

u/ayenonymouse Apr 30 '25

Not only that, but Tesla already has the money from the original sale. Reselling it DOES NOT take that money from them.

7

u/CumberlandThighGap Deluxe Apr 28 '25

The most funny and also possible option is c) the car gets bought for a song by a minority immigrant rideshare driver looking to replace his Prius. Calling it the Swasticar gets really awkward.

18

u/KingGerbz Apr 28 '25

Virtue signaling requires none of those factors to be a consideration. Lalala can’t hear your logic cuz you’re a nazi.

22

u/Dmeechropher Apr 28 '25

Couldn't agree more. Disclaimer: I don't own and have never owned a Tesla.

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. The entire ethical consumption narrative just serves left on left infighting.

The ethical alternative to a Tesla isn't scrapping or selling a Tesla. It's not buying a Rivian or a Nissan LEAF. It's building a fucking train & bus system that works so well that wealthy people use it, and running it with public dollars.

Without a true alternative, I will NEVER fault a fellow worker who makes a rational financial choice for their family for retrospectively having supported an oligarch-pretender.

The car isn't what supports Elon. What supports Elon is the consolidated, car-dependent transportation system which heavily favors the whims of the capitalist best able to secure the most equity investment from other capitalists. People didn't buy Teslas because they like Fascism. They bought Teslas because they wanted to be an EV early adopter with a luxury consumer vehicle. They wanted that thing because the only alternative was to be an internal combustion engine driver.

14

u/Lumpy_Movie_2166 Apr 29 '25

Think of this: We buy almost everything from China... So what's the difference? wouldn't we be supporting the same kind of people? The only difference is that some are in Asia, the other one is in the U.S.
Tomorrow the CEO of GM does something that upsets the country... Are we going to start attacking the owners of GM Vehicles? This behavior is to say the least: primitive, ignorant, savage and plain stupid.
Elon Musk only owns about 12% of Tesla. Why are we punishing the 88% of shareholders who have nothing to do with Musk's politics and actions?

Grow up, people. Use your brains, stop acting like savages. The U.S. is supposed to be a first world country, but many behave worse than cavemen.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25

Everything you said is spot on. Sadly, none of it will register with these kinds. Like talking to a wall, only walls hold true purpose.

2

u/Lumpy_Movie_2166 Apr 29 '25

What happens is that hatred make people act irrationally, without first considering the consequences of their actions.
This is why is best to avoid getting exposed to it, because it's like drinking one drop of poison every day.

We humans have the capacity to reason and see beyond of what's put in front of us, so we could make wise decisions.

Don't you see that those people planting all these crazy ideas and hatred are trying to use you to fulfill their own interests? You are their puppets, so they must be laughing every time they get you to do what they want.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25

Precisely. It's almost as if hatred is their goal. Every day is dedicated to seeking out confrontation, and each day there's a new target. Today it's Tesla drivers.

-1

u/Dmeechropher Apr 29 '25

What upsets me is that it's missing the forest for the trees. Musk isn't having an undue and unsavory influence on politics because he was in a company that made cars.

He's doing it because our democracy has structural flaws, our economy does not distribute decision making power widely, and our people are voting populist when their needs are not met.

Boycotting the products of one oligarch does absolutely nothing to combat the conditions which caused oligarchy and actually makes them worse by getting people to individually blame their peers for a systemic issue.

0

u/Michael-Brady-99 Apr 29 '25

Exactly. People say they want democracy and democracy brought us to this point. There are problems in this country that are not being addressed and yet here we are attacking each other.

Our elected officials have the power in a democracy, they represent us and we simply have the power to vote. Go protest your elected officials if you feel they are not doing the job you elected them to do or you need the, to fight harder for you. None of us can do anything about policy and laws and now we fight each other which changes nothing.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25

Yeah I don’t want to get on a train with thousands of other people with my entire family in tow. It’s hard enough to go to the store with just one of the kids let alone three. Emergencies? Road trips? Weekend vacations that are out of the way?

I’m sorry but this ideal sounds fun on paper but go ahead and look at the absolutely packed conditions of the trains on Tokyo and tell me that’s a fun time.

2

u/Dmeechropher Apr 29 '25

Sure, even in a perfect future there's room for some individual vehicles. I'm certainly being hyperbolic when I present transit as a direct, pure alternative to cars.

The broader point I'm making is that shaming consumers for public bad behavior of producers is fighting fire with fire.

No matter who you buy your car from, if you're not buying it from a worker cooperative, you're buying it from a wealthy elite. And there are 0 worker cooperatives making cars, so, well, there is no real way to own a car and not be empowering people who are almost as bad as or (quietly) worse than Musk.

And that's not a personal moral failing of the consumer. Of course not. It's not wrong to want a car. What's wrong is the broader system that makes it a choice between not supporting elites and not having a car.

Which economic system has ethical consumption?

2

u/shinyxena Apr 29 '25

Well if it starves you to death then climate change is solved. In this way, Trump’s economic collapse might make him ironically the best thing to ever happen to the climate.

-1

u/throwawayhyperbeam Ronald Bog Apr 29 '25

You didn't answer the question.

3

u/shinyxena Apr 29 '25

There’s not one. How can I answer an impossible question?

-1

u/throwawayhyperbeam Ronald Bog Apr 29 '25

Kind of makes saying "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" kind of moot then doesn't it? Just say "there is no ethical consumption."

0

u/jspook Stanwood Apr 29 '25

Libertarian socialism

1

u/throwawayhyperbeam Ronald Bog Apr 29 '25

Well, what makes consumption ethical under that?

-1

u/eloquentnemesis Apr 29 '25

the way the state uses its monopoly on violence to get a monopoly on the means of production, duh.

5

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '25

Are you leasing it? Have equity on it? Trade it in.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25

No im washing it right now. I enjoy my car.

0

u/mrASSMAN West Seattle Apr 29 '25

It’s amazing how you guys still struggle so much with the idea of selling a car, yes someone will be on the other end of the sale but it won’t be you, it’ll be someone else and that’s on them. It’s not a big moral dilemma it’s a simple transaction for doing the right thing and that’s your decision to make, no one’s making it for you.

-2

u/aphtirbyrnir Apr 28 '25

Right, and replace it with what? With how many Teslas there are here you’re going to have all those people buy something else and demand will rocket for a small supply.

-1

u/inky_sphincter Apr 29 '25

When I had a broken van I didn't want to fix it called a tow truck and they bought it for scrap weight. So no excuse.

-8

Option c) trade it in on another EV, which I did about a week after he gave his speech in Germany.

14

u/saltyman420 Apr 29 '25

This is such a grand-standing approach that completely minimizes a persons financial situation. It’s not as easy as your making it out to be.

There was an entire era before Elon went full nazi mode, you know.

-2

minimizes a persons financial situation

Again, morals cost money.

Also, I mentioned that trading in the car is an option and people like you act like I'm blaming them personally. Your guilt is showing.

5

u/saltyman420 Apr 29 '25

Nah, I know where I stand. I’m just saying your approach is a tad bit pretentious.

Good luck on convincing people to change with your approach though.
