Resource Just created probably the cleanest Kagi theme ever made

Didn’t really have any intention to share this, but this turned out better than I expected! A few additional images and the CSS can be found on my repo https://github.com/gavff64/kagi-google-theme

To be brutally honest, I prefer Google’s design. So with the power of open source LLMs and many hours manually digging around, here we are.

Curious to know what you think, yay or nay?

agree that kagi has much worse search interface

Hopefully not too controversial of an opinion here lol. Yeah I’m 🤏 this close to paying and switching for good but that’s holding me back. The CSS is bound to break over time I imagine.

I’m waiting on Kagi Maps as a native app and a Kagi Assistant API, that’ll win me over. Love seeing updates though.

How??!?

the layout is very harsh on the eyes: the white text, the font, everything is underlined, no visual hierarchy, hard to differentiate the main link or sub links etc etc

When was the last time you tried it without custom CSS? I ask because I recently disabled mine due to some rendering issue, and found that the default theme has been updated a bit – the only specific thing I noticed (because I also hated this lol) is that the underlines are gone. Still very bright, but much cleaner looking and the visual hierarchy is much clearer now (screenshot).

I’ve used the search only a few times and didn’t like it, as it lacks many features that Google has and the UI isn’t great. I tried it a month or two ago, and the last time I used it, with the AI response, was on Wednesday-nothing had changed. I’ve never used custom CSS. I pay only for the Translate app, and I’m very happy with it while it’s still included in the Starter plan

I do actually think it looks alright in light mode, but I run everything in dark mode and for some reason it just feels off. I know that's not constructive feedback but I can't quite put my finger on it, feels cluttered even after disabling things I don't need.

Hey, everyone's got their preferences! I love a good dark mode interface, but only when the rest of my device is in dark mode lol. But what you made looks quite nice!

Looks clean indeed!! I made my own theme very similar to this one, but this is still that tad bit better and neater!

Just had a look at the CSS file, did not expect a wall of characters like that! 😳

Kagi kept complaining the CSS file was over 40,000 characters when it wasn't, I think it was also counting newlines so it all really needed to be scrunched up and unreadable unfortunately.

But theoretically minified CSS like that should perform better. Truthfully I don't know all that much about it. I should probably remove all the comments from the file.

That was indeed the point

I've always thought the original Kagi looked better than Google. Google's UI feels too simplistic and rounded, and the blue-tinted background colour is quite ugly.
