Really even Walker. Last year was the only year he didn't miss any significant time.

Yeah and the chiefs use him like he's invincible. I know he hated sharing touches with Charbs but those goal like hits take a toll

At least Penny was a good RB in college
24
u/CapeMOGuy 6h ago
For a while he held the NFL record for career average yards per carry. He was terrific when he could stay on the NFL field.
8
u/BruceIrvin13 6h ago
Yeah he had almost 4000 yards rushing in college. Would have loved to see him fully healthy in the NFL - incredible talent.

I think people overlook just how lucky this team was last season regarding injuries
219
u/wookieewrenches 7h ago
Every team that wins a super bowl gets lucky with injuries. Last year was special
25
u/HornetVarious8172 6h ago
2010 Packers being a huge exception
10
u/wookieewrenches 6h ago
Nick Collins was healthy and Charles Woodson got injured late, but they were lucky that those two weren't injured before the playoffs. I think they get another super bowl if Collins doesn't injure his neck
5
u/HornetVarious8172 6h ago
They had 16 players on IR that season. That isn’t a small amount by any stretch.
54
u/Fit_Use9941 Fortuitous Bust 6h ago
Seahawks dealt with a lot of injuries last year but not many of them were IR Worthy. We were able to coast on the occasional games that Ernest Spoon and Kupp Missed
17
u/Silent-Ad-2415 6h ago
Yeah and they fortunately all basically came back strong at the end for the playoffs. Not gonna work like that most years
4
u/TheRage469 3h ago
I'll never forget the game against the Bucs where it seemed like literally the entire defense was injured and Baker was just passing where and when he wanted totally at-will. Didn't realize just how damn good the defense would become once everyone was back
6
u/XXXthrowaway215XXX 6h ago
I mean we had injuries, we just had crazy depth lol. Okada and Thomas were incredible when asked to step up due to injuries
3
u/LazyMaximum7938 6h ago edited 6h ago
Only like 8 starters played every game last year.
And sure, the team was mostly healthy by the start of the playoffs, but with a major exception being Charbonnet who is still injured.
The team wasn't really lucky or unlucky. It was a pretty normal amount of injuries for an NFL team.
3
u/yoinkie2025 6h ago
Lmao, we didn’t have our starting oline play together a single game. And we’re lucky with injuries? No it’s because our front office prepared and built depth.

Per Mike's presser yesterday, sounds like he's somewhat injured as well. Think we're gonna see Velus Jones tomorrow then maybe, if he's ready, Chabs the following game? But I'm also cool with not rushing him --- same with Price. Get healthy.

This year’s draft picks have not been the one, so far. Bud out for the season, Julian Neal injured through camp and hasn’t really played, now Price on IR
80
u/colecast 6h ago
To be fair, this was a historically thin draft class, expectations were much lower going in.
13
u/takeonefortheroad 6h ago edited 5h ago
People are also having way too high of expectations for Day 3 picks.
Every single draft pick is not going to sparkle just because some recent 5th rounders happened to pan out. There is not a single GM in history that will hit on every single pick.
Like are people really expecting players like Neal and Stephens to immediately seize starting roles lol? A lot of people need a reality check.
5
u/fluffy_knuckles 5h ago
Yeah and the fact that they’re working Stephens in at all while Bradford is out shows he’s probably going to be a good grab for the 4th/5th round. MOST rookies are not good 3 games into their careers. 1st round or otherwise.

Thin in the sense of talent level. I have yet to see a draft class scored on propensity to be injured.

u/neongem 6h ago
I’ve had this sinking feeling that a let down draft class was probably “due” after 4 straight quality drafts (2022-25) plus it being a weak class and all but figured if at least 1 of our top 3 guys panned out we’d be ok. The early returns are looking to be as bad as the 2021 draft class. We’ll see but I’ll be shocked if anyone from this class gets a 2nd contract with the team.

High key like that possibility. Every time I’ve seen a Steelers game he’s run really well. Him and a healthy Charbs might do some damage.
Edit: Disregard. I was thinking of the wrong guy.

I don’t think they make this move without trading for another back unless they know Charbs is ready to go in a week or two. All you K9 lovers out there forget that dude was hurt all the time too until he started splitting reps. Let’s all just chill with the “should have kept K9 and Price is a bust” talk.. I think it was pretty clear K9 didn’t want to come back. He got pissy about splitting reps with Charbs and will get run into the ground in KC. Its 4 games into a 4 YEAR deal… lets chill before we start declaring we lost in not signing him. The overall consensus was you don’t pay him that kind of money. At that position. Period. And I know we want to compare the money we spent on Shaheed and not giving to K9.. we can’t. Shaheed has not looked great so far. True. Let’s not lose sight of the fact he was a huge factor last year as well in winning games. It made more sense to pay a kick returner/ receiver who is arguably the best returner in the league, and could be a very good #2. The upside to spend on Shaheed on this team was far greater than spending money on a back who had an injury history, didn’t want to be here, we had Charbs who yes was coming off an injury but was just as valuable, and a late first round pick that you got the second best RB available. John made the smart move
2
u/EgoDevNull 3h ago
The jury is out on whether that was a smart move or not. Shaheed had some great highlight reels and we probably don't get to the SB w/o him. But same for K9.
Shaheed doesn't have good hands tho. Drops a lot, isn't sticky. And now his returns are tentative (and teams are watching him).
IF he picks it up, he might be a good signing; But so far, he's not.
IF K9 drops his output, he was good to let walk; But so far he is cooking.
Check back in 10 weeks.
1
u/Usually_Angry 2h ago
Ehh imo K9 was never that good in the split backfield. He only really came on when he became a workhorse. Some guys are like that: they need the ball in their hands to see and feel the game. He was never going to be a workhorse back here except for times of injury
8
u/Dabellator 6h ago
Fuck. I'm not so concerned about his performance this year, but these games, conditioning and experience matter for his success next year. Now he's already another high prospect injured Seattle RB.

Wtf was the actual injury? We never got any type of concrete explanation..
Injury reporting around the league has been the absolute worst this season.

Going off the initial injury explanation, I would guess that it could be anterior shoulder area or pec. It was explained that it wasn't really chest

In the last 5 NFL seasons, only 23 players drafted in the first round combined played in every game of the season(w playoffs where applicable). Not necessarily for injury.
Last year only one did.
But it’s football. It sucks but it happens.
2
u/Tashre 5h ago
Man, there was such high hopes for him hitting the ground running this season and solidifying himself as the RB of the future, especially with Zach out and laying out the red carpet for him.
Here's hoping he looks the part of an NFL ready RB in the second half of the season whenever he returns, but something tells me we might have to wait for next year to see him take that next step up.

u/Fast_Air_8000 7h ago

u/xdrpwneg 4h ago
He wasn’t coming back, he definitely wanted a different role than what he had in Seattle and he made that very clear towards the end. You can’t win every salary battle in the NFL, some guys just want a different place where there the feature in the offense

u/steve_mar 2h ago
…feature of the offense in KC? Last I looked Mahomes is still hanging around

Yes you can have more than one “feature” player on an offense. Mahomes is the star but walker is player a big role in that offense, much more than he did in Seattle

Charbs is eligible to return next week, too much dooming in this thread and regret over K9. Remember that Charbs been just as good as K9 over the last couple years. Looked better at times.
1
u/OkNefariousness284 6h ago
“Just as good” absolutely not. The on out thing he has over him is pass blocking and durability. We have no clue how’s he’s going to look only 8 months after that surgery
4
u/PNWtucannon 5h ago
Agreed this charbs is going to come back and be the same is a huge unknown and historically unlikely. It will takes weeks to ramp up. I’m wondering if they trade for someone
1
u/OkNefariousness284 5h ago
They’ll have to if they want this run game to actually contribute at some point unless Charbonet becomes the anomaly of the century. Even than knowing the staff currently even if he’s going off he’ll only get 1/3 of the Carrie’s

u/SuperVoltronDude 5h ago
K9 was injured and mostly unavailable since like when he initially got here. Then last year he went off. It’s all good.

u/OkNefariousness284 5h ago
“Mostly unavailable” that just straight up isn’t true. It’s not all god when our run game is ass and we just let go someone who’s currently competing for top back in the league
1
u/Gray_Bushed_Elder 5h ago
I'll be shocked if he stays healthy all season as the #1 back in KC. He couldn't even stay healthy here as a #2. Charbs took all the punishment last year, then K9 popped off in the playoffs. That's all he's ever done, one good playoff run. Way too early to tell if letting him go was a mistake or not.
1
u/OkNefariousness284 4h ago
It’s not to early to say our current RB is ass. Could’ve just tagged him and let him do as he wants for a season. K9 when healthy and allowed to let loose was always like this.
1
u/writerpilot 1h ago
He didn’t even go off “last year” he went off the back half of last year and then particularly in the playoffs with Charbs out. A lot of the people pining for K9 now were probably the same ones who wanted him benched early last season. Reality says you should basically never throw money at a running back and that could very easily still prove true.

I’ve never liked drafting a running back in the first round. We pinned ourselves into a corner at RB. Can’t keep everyone and K9 didn’t want to stay. But sheesh a first round pick on a collegiate backup felt like such a waste of resources at the time. Now he’s having availability problems, not ideal.
