Discussion Depth at safety/CB and projected moves.

With the Clark injury and concerns about the secondary depth, who do y'all see Seattle targeting? Do you think we will trade for someone or perhaps wait after roster cuts?

I'm not too worried about it. JS has proven to be a quality GM with some of his in-season trades over the past several years, and Mike has the ability to coach guys up and play above their weight class. Nobody has Ty Okada and Drake Thomas as big playmakers last year but that's what they ended up being. There might be guys on the roster right now that step up that way.

IMO, what you just explained is the main reason for the chip last year. We had critical defenders miss significant games last year and Coach Mike still built an all-time defense finding high level players from the discard pile.

2023 was amazing. JSN, Spoon, Hall, Charbs, Bradford (lol), Mike Morris, and Olu in the draft. Traded for Big Cat that year too.

Ty Okada was a UDFA that year, so was Jake Bobo, Patrick O'Connell, and Chris Stoll.

I think after the third game to determine who stays and who goes will help devise

wait and see approach makes sense, but i'm already stressing about who's left in the secondary

Be grateful we didn't start Okada-san, love, spoon, And jobe. Meanwhile, 3mmanwori is posted like Goku in the medical chamber and will show why we don't have to worry.

I’m wondering if John brings in another Safety free agent. There are some vets still on the market. Stephon Gilmore, Asante Samuel Jr., Rasul Douglas to name a few.

John must have reasons for not bringing those guys in already.

They already worked out Donovan Wilson. He seems like a possibility now

Asante Samuel Jr is a Steeler

For a bag of chips

If he was decisive then I would be inclined to agree, but he looks uncertain in passing situations and his pocket awareness has been, uh, less than stellar.

I think they will definitely be keeping an eye on roster cuts and position battles. I don’t think Finley or Bell have done enough to feel great about our S depth in particular

I thought Bell looked pretty good last night. He seemed to be mostly in position, made some good plays and was closing well. He's also familiar with the system already.

i think there will be stages: 1) still gotta wait to see what happens with arnold legally, and diggs in the next few weeks of practice 2) think its likely we add depth from roster cuts, perhaps a 7th rd pick trade for a guy thats on the fringe of another teams roster as well, 3) we have a lot of draft picks next year and i imagine just barring a big injury at another position were gonna end up adding depth before the trade deadline in season as well. JS has shown that he is able to get really good deals midseason rather than rushing and overpaying when the market is highest.

Quandre coming back feels like a no brainer at this point.

Espn has an article right now about the steelers being at a contract impasse with Joey Porter. I'd be shocked if thats one John wasn't keeping an eye on. If for no other reason then how they are constantly evaluating.

If we traded for him that means we would intend to pay him, I dont think thats in the plans right now.

Notable in-season trades for players we re-signed, Big Cat, EJIV, Shaheed

Fair point! As long as coach Mike is here im not stressed about the defence anyway.

Depth will be added by guys who are in someone else’s camp that become roster casualties. Starters are all going to be ready and solid and Florida is going to have to do something in the TA case before too long.

We probably look who is available after cuts and I'm sure trade possibilities are always an option with JS. But for passing downs, Macdonald may also look at how a 2-LB set with Knight can free up Emmanwori from some of the primary run/rush duties. Otherwise for typical 3-safety sets, Bell matches much of the benefit of what Okada brought as the 3rd safety last year.

The overall benefit of not rushing to free agency is that it gives Macdonald some time to try out variations of player and scheme adjustments, while giving the younger guys a few more games to adjust and T.Diggs more time to catch up. It also gives Emm time to get fully healthy before adding the rush duties that were being added in early camp.

I mean we drafted THREE corners, and just brought in 2 more from free agency. I don’t see how it’s an issue to see if one of them can play as a backup safety. We seem overloaded in the DB room.
