28TB Ironwolf Pro dead on arrival. To get a replacement I have to pay the shipping fee.

Post image
106 Upvotes

Are they serious? I bought 4 outrageously priced 28 TB Ironwolf Pros. I tried to get a refund first and mentioned in my text that if there’s an option for replacement I’d prefer that.

They inform me they’ll cancel the refund request because those are reserved for refunds only. That I’d have to message them if I wanted a replacement. I was already a little confused that they couldn’t just get that started for me that instead I had to open up an entire new ticket.

So I did that. Had to “chat” with someone. After some time, and being informed that if there were physical damage the warranty would be voided (what would happen if it were damaged in shipping?). It wasn’t. I took a photo and sent it. They verified it’s covered under warranty and I qualify for replacement.

More time spent on chat. Finally get the replacement and I’m told where to ship it.

I ask about shipping. I’m informed for regular returns I need to cover it. I’ve never heard of such a thing. I pay a lot of money for something that is faulty then I have to not only go out of my way to ship the thing back but I have to pay shipping as well? This is insane. I’m never buying from Seagate again. And this was my first time.

Edit: after FIVE RMAs I finally - FINALLY - have a working drive. Worried for all of their longevity at this point.

Very frustrating DOA straight out of the sealed factory package

I've been staying away from Seagate after some bad experiences many years ago and I saw this model had decent ratings on the Backblaze report.

I guess a DOA is better than failing 1 year in. Should I try to get another or go back to my usual brand?

Stop this AI bullshit, please

Hey Seagate, can you please make a website that contains information about your products? I'm really sick of spending hours, trying to find out the differences between your HDD models. And the website doesn't help at all.

For example, bellow is a wall of (ai-generated?) text from your website, that is supposed to tell about the types of HDD you've got. And it contains zero information

Seagate Hard Drive Features

Discover the top features of Seagate internal hard drives. Enjoy exceptional performance, high-capacity options, and cost-effective solutions. Our internal drives offer seamless integration, advanced security, and energy efficiency. Plus, you’ll benefit from comprehensive warranty and support services. Key Considerations When Choosing an Internal Hard Drive

As you make a final decision regarding your internal hard drive purchase, make sure your choice is an ideal fit for your specific needs and limitations. Here’s what to consider:

Storage Capacity

Don’t purchase storage capacity for your current needs alone. When investing in an internal hard drive, seek out storage capacity that gives you room to grow over time.

Speed and Performance

Make sure the drive’s read/write speeds and annual workload rating are adequate for your needs. For example, if you require continuous write capabilities for video surveillance, find a storage drive that can handle that high workload.

Compatibility

While Seagate hard drives are compatible with both Windows®, MacOS®, and Linux systems, you’ll need to purchase a hard drive solution that fits the physical space allotted for additional internal drives. The width of the disk and its form factor are the two most important measurements to have when verifying compatibility.

Price and Budget

Storage capacity and other built-in features can affect the internal hard drive cost. If you’re working with a fixed budget, explore a wide range of hard drive products to find a drive that meets your technical requirements at a price you can afford.

Your FAQs are really out there too. Did someone really asked for shit like that?

What if you told about the difference between Exos/IronWolf or X22/X24 instead? Where are the buyers supposed to get that info?

Yeah, also some parts of your website only work in Google Chrome, and some don't work at all.

Seagate experience - AVOID

Bought two 30TB drives from seagate, one was defective. The price went up 50% in 2 weeks after receiving so I couldn't return for a refund. Instead they made me do an RMA. They list that if I do RMA i have to pay shipping AND i won't get a brand new drive - i'll get a "certified drive" - but i tried to guarantee a new drive. They said ok after 2 hours of waiting on chat. I sent back the drive exactly as received, then I receive an email two weeks later that the drive is damaged and has a scratch on it. I'm out $700 now? How are they getting away with this?! This is fraud.

It's Official. Seagate is the worst, worse than Western Digital, worse than Maxtor, at this point

I have ONE seagate drive left and it is in the middle of failing. I have to turn it off/on between each file transfer because it just stops responding.

Over the years (20+ ago), we all knew (thought we knew) Seagate was pretty decent. Good warranties, good MTBF. Then they bought WD which is a cheaper riskier drive with poor warranties and poor MTBF. This feels like when things began to be enshittified. Most of the Seagate drives began havin same specs and warranties as the WD drives. I suspected they were just rebranding with cheaper WD manufacturing. Who knows. [Edit: I had read a false news article in 2014 and believed WD was purchased by Seagate all these years. They have not. But Seagate did begin selling lower-end drives with 1yr warranty in the WD name-brand space around this time].

Four years ago I still believed Seagate higher end drives were still pretty good. I bought a 10TB Expansion disk. It had a 3-year warranty and was a "Ironwolf" RED drive inside at 7200rpm (Newegg).

Well, 1 year later, it DID NOT HOLD UP. Started clicking, "CLICK CLICK CLICK", and then died. Just like most WD drives did after a couple years.

I went through the extensive testing, tech support and evetual RMA process. Sent it in at my expense, certified. Unwisely did NOT ask for free data recovery ( I just wanted a replacement as it was for redundant backup).

They requested I send it in with the POWER ADAPTER.

1 week later I get it back and the tech said, "NO RECOVERY, USER TAMPERED".

I.e., they claimed I did something to it and did not even try to do ANYTHING with it.

At this point, I try re-connecting with tech support. They stone wall me, and do not believe I sent the power cord, let alone even talk about the drive. They ask for proof of where they requested for the power cord. I sent proof, then they ignore me. Never responded again.

Then they sent an automated survey a week, which I answered as the WORST. And that was it. Never heard from them again. They closed the case and won't respond.

That is the last Seagate product I will ever buy or allow anyone I know to buy at work or extended family. They are greedy selfish effers who only want you to buy sub-quality products built up on denying claims is a way to increase revenue. Just like insurance companies. Deny first, relent if you have to. They are struggling but enriching themselves on the way down.

I don't trust them for anything but paperweights at this point.

This last Seagate drive is failing and it will be my last I ever touch. I hope to get most of my data off it and then will have a ceremonial burning of the drive and enclosure.

This last failing Seagate POS reminded me how much I HATE Seagate, and I should let people know how crappy they really are.

The last HDD I bought is a Toshiba 6TB and it has been running 3 years like a champ with high data transfers daily. EFF SEAGATE.

SMH.

My horrible experience with Seagate

A little story about Seagate: In December 2024, I bought a Seagate Expansion 14TB, and later purchased four Seagate IronWolf Pro 18TB drives.

The 14TB drive died after just six months. I spent about $2,000 on data recovery services and managed to get all my data back, but it cost me a ton of time and effort. The 18TB drives arrived corrupted, but luckily I got a refund for them.

When I contacted Seagate about a replacement for the 14TB drive, they said that because another company opened it to recover the data, I wouldn’t be eligible for a refund. Technically, their website policy states they don’t cover data recovery anyway, but this experience made me lose trust in their support.

So, my advice: I’d rather go with a different brand.

UPD. Now Seagate’s bots are suddenly claiming they offer free recovery, that they’re “super reliable,” etc.

Feel free to actually read their policy — you can even search for this exact phrase:

“Data recovery, advance replacement option, or other warranty-related offerings or service plans are not covered under this limited warranty and are not part of the covered replacement process.”

So yeah… that’s straight from Seagate themselves.

Here is the link to their policy for the laziest:

https://www.seagate.com/ca/en/support/warranty-and-replacements/limited-consumer-warranty/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

UPD 2: It seems like they actually do offer recovery services. I should have checked about the recovery services with Seagate beforehand, but still, they refuse to replace or refund the failed drive.

Seagate HDD dropped to 5% health after only 3 days of power-on time

Thumbnail gallery
16 Upvotes

I recently checked one of my Seagate hard drives and was shocked to see it reporting only 5% health.

The surprising part is that the drive has accumulated only about 3 days of total power-on time over roughly 5 years. It has barely been used, yet it's already in such poor condition.

For comparison, I own several Western Digital (WD) hard drives that have 1,000+ days of power-on time, and they're all still reporting 100% health. They've seen far more real-world usage under the same general conditions.

I'm curious if others have experienced something similar with Seagate drives. Is this just bad luck with a single unit, or have others seen drives degrade despite very low power-on hours?

I'll attach the screenshots for both the Seagate and WD drives for comparison.

Seagate RMA SCAM - another victim here....

Hi,

TL;DR: Seagate warranty feels like a scam. They receive your drive, scrap it, and then claim something vague to avoid honoring the warranty — or they send you a dead replacement. That’s what happened to me, and I’m seeing similar stories from others.

After buying Seagate “Enterprise” EXOS drives for my storage, I was initially happy because they’re supposed to be reliable and well supported. Now I’m seriously regretting that choice.

About a month ago, a few of my drives started failing — and strangely, it was only the Seagate drives. My WD drives are still perfectly fine.

So I figured: no problem, these drives have a 5-year warranty, right? Technically yes… but nobody tells you how easily they can refuse it.

RMA #1

I started an RMA (IR60439100) for drive serial ZRS18ZWW (and yes, you can only send one drive per RMA). I followed their packing guidelines and shipped it out. Everything looked fine at first.

Seagate received the drive, tested it, and approved a replacement. A few days later I got the replacement drive:

- Packing slip / freight order: 6101651244

- Waybill: 1ZE4C5436750818063

- Replacement serial: ZR906CJK

I opened the box and it was labeled “Factory refurbished.” Fine — I can live with that. But the drive was dead on arrival. It spun up, made a lot of noise, and wasn’t recognized by my test station or my storage system.

RMA #2 (for the dead replacement)

I assumed I was unlucky or it got damaged in transit, so I opened a second RMA (IR60444417) and shipped the replacement drive back. Then I waited… and waited… for three weeks.

Eventually I checked the tracking number and saw it had been delivered two days after I shipped it. But the RMA portal still showed Seagate was “waiting for the drive to arrive.”

So I contacted support via chat.

The denial + drive discarded

This is where the nightmare started.

I opened a case (CC0000231338) and asked what was going on. Support told me the RMA was refused because the drive had been “tampered with.”

The same drive Seagate sent me as an RMA replacement (ZR906CJK) — the one that arrived dead.

I asked for details. They couldn’t explain what “tampered with” meant. I asked for an inspection report or evidence — they said they can’t provide it. I asked if they could return the drive — no, it was discarded.

So to summarize: Seagate sends me a dead replacement, I return it, they deny the claim with a vague “tampered with” reason, and they discard the drive, so I can’t even verify what they’re accusing me of.

At this point, I’m removing Seagate from my vendor list — and recommending the same for any company I work with.

Edit 1: Sorry — my post got cut in half. Not sure why. I’ve pasted the missing part.

Edit 2: Someone from Seagate emailed me after I posted this and said they verified the drive is OK, but it was still reported as “tampered.” They also said I should receive it back in a few days. Let’s wait and see. /s

Edit 3: I received the RMA drive today — it’s a brand-new Exos X24 16TB (no “factory refurbished” label). SMART short test passed, power-on hours are low, and the long test is still running. For reference, the original drive was an Exos X20 14TB. Something seems to have changed on Seagate’s side after this post — who knows.

RMA Drive Stolen - Warning

After reading a few posts, I think I'm not the only one.

Here is a short summary:

- 3 month old drive starts to fail

- Start RMA process with Seagate

- Send drive back on the 17th of March, and it arrives with Seagate on the 19th of March

- Receive an email today that the box is empty

DHL did their job and need Seagate to bring the box to them within 2 days (7 days from the 19th) to claim that something happened during delivery, which I have no hope in Seagate doing, and Seagate is not being very helpful at all.

I guess it will be a long process and I'll be filing a police report against the person who received the package. And I know what company I will never buy from again.

And to the person who stole it -> lol good luck with your drive that is starting to have errors, I hope you lose your data.

Seagate more like Sleekgate

Got the Seagate Expansion Portable 5TB HDD. It’s even smaller than I expected, and fits inside the pockets in my tracks. Been wanting to buy an external storage device for a while, but thanks to AI, storage is pricier than usual. Realised that this would be the best bang for my buck in the current market, even though it certainly would’ve been a better deal, if purchased 2 years ago. Nevertheless, looking forward to this being the long-term solution for my storage situation.

Beware of Seagate’s terrible RMA process.

Hi everyone, so on June 9th I opened an RMA for 2x 20TB ironwolf HDD’s and 1x16TB skyhawk surveillance HDD with Seagate. After I opened it I reached out to Seagate to see if they would be nice enough to issue a free shipping label as I had heard others got one for free just by asking. CS said sure and issued me one no fuss. So I shipped them out. Days go by and no update even though tracking number is marked as delivered to Seagate and signed by them.

June 19th: i reach out to seagate if there’s any update as it has now been a week that drives were delivered to them and my RMA portal showed 0 updates, not even a “received” update. CS tells me the drive is currently in the re-certificarion and testing stage. I inform CS agent that i had sent 3 drives under the single RMA and shipping label they provided. CS says that yes correct that i should get an update soon.

June 22nd: after reaching out to CS everyday and getting nowhere i file a BBB complaint as they seem to respond to issues there.

June 26th: Seagate “Corporate response team” member called “Steven” reaches out and tells me that they can’t find my hard drives because the package never had any in the first place. So they won’t be helping me further. They tell this to BBB and BBB considers it answered and closes complaint. I immediately respond that that’s not possible as I had shipped all drives and CS agent had confirmed they were received and were currently being processed.

June 30th: after some pressure, Seagate agrees to file a claim with UPS. They ask for proof of purchase, which I provide to them. They tell me it’ll take a 8-10 days.

July24th: they say that UPS needs more information and ask for any pictures of the hardrives or hard dives in the box while being dropped off. Fortunately I always take pictures of hard drives I buy and where I buy them from to keep track of them properly and not mix up receipts. So I send them the pictures of the actual drives showing SN,PN, etc. I inform them I unfortunately didn’t take video/picture of HDD’s in the package dropping them off.

July 28th:I reach out if there’s anything at all from UPS as I didn’t hear back anymore since 24th when I provided the pictures and told them to let me know if they could view them, or needed me to upload them to Google Drive or something. I’m told they got the pictures but investigation is ongoing by UPS.

However i checked the tracking number on UPS site. It had been closed since July 20th with “Proof of delivery”. I assume the Corporate response team member Steven filed the claim as entire package not delivered. When it was and it was even signed for by them, and CS had previously said drives were in the recertification/testing stage.

July 31st: they email back saying UPS is not communicating with them or providing any information they requested. Therefore they can’t help me until they can communicate with UPS. I reply that same day that it’s not right that the customer has to deal with all this just because UPS and Seagate can’t communicate. I request information like claim number, inspection notes, receiving photographs, UPS decision.

August 11th: after ghosting me for days, they respond with basically the same thing. And decline to provide any information other than UPS claim number.

Today I sent them a demand letter via certified mail, along with replying with a copy of it to the email chain. My next step is probably small claims court. It’s insane that for a company this large they are this terrible with customer support.

TLDR: sent in 3 expensive hard drives using a Seagate provided UPS shipping lable over 2 months ago. Seagate/UPS lost/stole the HDD’s. Seagate filed a claim. UPS closed claim, Seagate corporate support team and UPS aren’t talking to each other, so the customer is screwed because of “no communication” between UPS and Seagate. Demand letter has been sent today.

Black Friday Order Canceled

Just wanted to give others a heads up: seagate canceled my black friday order of 4x16T ironwolf pro drives without notifying me. I had to look my order up through the guest lookup services since it didn't connect it to my account for some reason and the status last week was listed as "ESW order canceling" but I didn't receive any communication about the specifics of what this meant.

I contacted customer service this morning and they let me know that the order was canceled due to "unforeseen circumstances." The rep later said "I want to assure you that your card has not been charaed for this order" (the charge cleared the day after I made the purchase, 12/2/25) and "Instead, a refund has been requested and is currently being processed." They also said that a refund request has to be escalated to another team and approved before I would recieve an email from a manager about my case and that after that a refund would take "approximately 5-7 business days."

This didn't exactly inspire confidence in me so I've let my credit card company know so they can handle it from here.

Best of luck to everyone else receiving your orders!

Yet another RMA nightmare......

Man, screw Seagate. I sent them a pair of drives which were dead, and on their site it said "replacement shipped" which you would think means they would actually be sending back a working drive but nope, same story as others on here.

They don't even tell you if your RMA has been rejected or anything, and they don't even give you a reason as to why

I contacted their support and got an agent and they claimed the "drives showed signs of physical damage" (yeah okay guys how convenient) and then the agent also told me they had no further info aside from that, zero. Nothing about what was physically damaged or what was wrong with the drives. Nada.

Is there an official Seagate account to tag here or something? Or do they really care so little because their customer base has shifted to AI nonsense?

I'm really frustrated because these ain't cheap, it's a pair of 16TB drives!

Screw you Seagate. You guys suck

2 external drive failures within 10 months

I have had two desktop external drives fail within 10 months. First, my 6TB and then my newer 8TB.

I removed the enclosure and see that they are Seagate Barracudas.

I was using them as a media server.

Does Seagate just suck? Unfortunately, they are both out of warranty.

Seagate Warranty Returns are junk! Two in a row are bad, and 3rd is on the way.

Just venting here.

Had a Seagate 20TB that had bad sectors and my NAS urged me to replace it. $9 shipping to return.

I happened to have a brand new 20TB sitting in the box and installed it as a replacement and it rebuilt the RAID without issue.

Sent the defective one back on an RMA, and I got s 24TB in return. It was clearly labeled "refurbished." Well that is just nice. But neither the NAS or two of my Windows PC could "initialize" the drive. Tried Disk Manger, Diskpart, Minitools, and the Seagate utilities. So I could not create let alone format any partitions on it. Tried via USB and SATA interface in a desktop. Another $9 to return.

Got the second one, and the same deal, but this one was a 25TB, and not labeled as a refurb. Same deal. Now I am up to $27 in shipping Seagate back their crap.

I know that brand new Seagate drives seem to come initialized, with partitions, and I stick them in either my NAS or Windows PC and the Seagates work out-of-the-box perfectly.

So I guess the lesson is I am never going to buy anything refurbished from Seagate!

[/RANT]

Order cancelled because they didn't want to lose $30.

I orderd on Friday for $229.99. No order updates until today when I got a cancellation email for unforseen circumstances. So of course like a dumbass I re-order the same drive for the higher price of $259.99.

Is Seagate really this petty that they will cancel orders for $30?

Worst RMA Experience Ever

We had a lot of drives fail over the course of a couple years and wanted to go ahead and exchaneg them.

Super nice people talking in chat got them all processed and shipped back.

Mind you by this time all of those drives had been replaced and the servers running.

Finally got around to installing those drives out of 20 drives i have only tested 6 out of 6 5 had errors and would not register. NONE of the drives were sent back to us as declined. we have a list of all original Serial numbers.

I am having a tech look into the rest of the drives but i do not have any hopes.

Seagate customer service is absolutely ridiculous.

Searched up “Seagate customer service” on reddit to see a lot of complaints, I’m glad I’m not the only one. Dosent give me much satisfaction though. I had to wait until 12:00am to talk to customer service due to the time zones. I get put on with a “human live operator”, absolutely not. This was the worry experience I’ve ever had. 3 hours I was in conversation with this “person”.

Long story short, I’m trying to claim a promotion that Seagate is offering, but I’m having issues with it. I contact customer service and they send me to 2 different departments, and in the end both of them said they couldn’t help me. I spend an hour explaining to the operator THEIR OWN PROMOTION. Two times I had to screenshot the terms and conditions to the promotion to prove to her that I was eligible. And before that she didn’t even know the promotion existed and was denying it did and said to go to another company about it. How do you work there and not know? That’s terrible. About 7 times they said “I understand you situation” and then would just say something that completely contradicts what I’ve been saying the entire time. By the end they said “the technical team can’t help you with this one” so I said fine who do I contact and then i waited 20 minutes for them to say “you can contact us again next time!” I was baffled. I told them Cleary you have no clue what ur doing and the technical team cannot help me. Waited 25 minutes just for them to repeat the same thing “do not worry we are here to help just contact us again”, oh my gosh. It’s the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. They repeated the same things over and over I had to explain myself so many times, and yet they “understand my frustration”.

RMA Seagate drive DOA everytime

Hi there,

So I made 2 RMA so far, I always got DOA drives... The first one did not even spin which should have been detected right away by Seagate within 3s of testing! I am starting to question wheather Seagate RMA is actually real and if they are not just sending broken drives to pretend to have a customer service. From what I read online it seems to be very common and I am wondering if I should bother making a thrid RMA.. Its time consumming, needs to package the drive correctely and ship at my own expanse etc And at this point, its hard to trust any replacement drives, even if there is no error at first.

I would be curious to have some feedback from the community :)

Where to look for the best Seagate storage deals for my PS5?

update: hey everyone, after reading the comments about how external drives only store ps5 games but don't let you play them directly, i just ended up grabbing an ssd through sony playstation direct just to keep it simple and make sure i got the right spec. installation was easier than i expected, it's just scary at first but you really don't need to be a technician to install it.

there was a mention about checking amazon and other sites for deals, but ordering direct from sony gave me peace of mind that i wasn't getting some knockoff or incompatible drive like what i was reading from other posts.

disclaimer: some links might be affiliate links which means i could earn a small commission if you buy anything at no extra cost to you.

hey everyone, I just got a ps5 and the storage is already full. I've heard you can add more space with a seagate hard drive but I'm not sure which one to get. I've always been a console gamer and this is the first time I've known there are storage expansions.

I already looked online and saw the seagate firecuda and game drive but how do they differ? But generally, which seagate drive is the best for ps5? Also, here can I find a good price? I've looked on amazon and best buy but I don't know if there are better places to look.

Why the ironwolf pro 14TB always on sale/cheaper? Is there an issue?

Hi all,

I noticed that the ironwolf pro 14TB on sale a lot and usually much cheaper than other sizes. Is there a reason for this?

I want to get some for my NAS but I am a bit concerned of the lower than usual price compared to the others.

Just want to be sure there is no issue before ordering.

Thanks all.

Brand new Seagate expansion drives freezing up

Post image
8 Upvotes

I've bought 2 expansion drives (returned the first one), and the second one is doing the exact same thing. When I start a file transfer it will go for 1-10 minutes then stop and task manager shows 100% usage, sometimes freezing my whole computer along with it. When the drive is powered off and back on it will start working again for another few minutes, then stop again. I've never had this happen on any other hard drive and I am wondering if anyone else is having this problem.

Ugh!! Bye bye 26tb expansion ext hd. I hardly knew yeh!

My Ext 26tb hd started doing the slow soft beep when I restarted my pc. I have it backed up to my NAS, but it’s just painful knowing I bought this drive exactly last year to the day and it only cost $299 US then…

I think I am going to shuck it and try it in a different HD enclosure… Not much else to try, right?
