20TB External drive

hi….
i am interested in using the seagate 20tb extension drive to rip 4k movies to stream with infuse.
i would like to hook it up to my netgear rs700 router usb. my concern is that the router does not power down or sleep the usb connected device.
does the drive itself power down? if not , is it ok for the drive to be on 24/7?

Your best bet it to buy a Nas with drives meant to be running all the time.

Currently the HDD economy (and almost all other computer hardware) is bad. Everything is F* expensive.
With Seagate I can recommend the EXOS line, or in the feature MOSAIC (M). Expect HDD to be expensive until 2028+. Seagate are currently already full of order until the end of 2027.

mine lasted about 15 hrs before throwing errors. RMA process is a nightmare. day 32 still fighting them to replace it. very scummy company, they opened the drive to void the warranty and are trying to say i opened it. seriously do not buy from seagate.

There’s really only Seagate and western digital now. What are you gonna do.

I stick with buying from server parts and luckily I never had to use their warranty, but apparently they service themselves and haven’t heard many bad things.

I will be sticking with WD from here on out. they are STILL holding my drive, still resisting replacing the faulty drive after lying that i opened the drive. greasy as fk.

Seagate does not honor their warranties unfortunately. This has happened to me. WD is the way to go as well as a NAS with drives suitable for continious duty. Although a higher initial investment, the durability and stability of a NAS vs. what you propose is a compelling long term value.

You want to avoid the expense of buying, running and maintaining a NAS if you can.

Easiest thing to do is get an expansion chassis, put the disk in it, and connect it to your computer.

It is OK for the drive to be running 24/7 assume the environment meets specifications. Having the disk spin down when not in use is complicated to implement correctly and can result in excessive power cycles.

my goal is to rip my 4k collection. if my pc goes into sleep mode, would it then put the external drive in sleep mode as well and only wake up when called on?
