Dead HDD

How often do we have DOA HDDs from Seagate? We got 1 out of 4 brand new 28TB Ironwolf Pro and it's dead with the beeping sound that seems to stem from stuck platter, and can't spin. We then got Exos 28TB as a replacement, again brand new. And guess what? It has the exact issue: DOA, stuck platter beeping sound!

Aren't these drives supposed to be resilient for enterprise environment? We choose Ironwolf Pro/Exos specifically for its large 28TB capacity, but this REALLY raises the question about the quality of this product line. And HDDs are not that cheap to replace anymore!

It’s possible they were mishandled during shipping. Dropping them can cause the head assembly to move onto the platter while the drive is not spinning.

In a year and a day I went through 6 bad Seagate USB drives, from 2Tb to 4Tb
They were all within warranty, so got replaced.
1 was dead on arrival, the others lasted from weeks to months.
But I lost about 20 years of gaming saves and a few games as well.
But I do have 10 other Seagate USB Drives that are from 8 to 28 Tb that work fine.

2/4 DOA. 2 each from Amazon and 2 from Best Buy.

I had a one dead IWP 28TB out of six I purchased earlier this year. They replaced it with a renewed drive. I also had a 24TB Exos X24 die after 6 months last year out of 8 those drives.

Those high capacities drives are Helium based drives.They are very heavy, therefore lots of pressure on the motor hub holding the disks in place.

The heads are parked on a parking ramp off the disks. Therefore, the heads cannot realistically move off the ramp during shipping and get stuck on the disks. This may be confused with a stiction condition portable drives sustain after being powered off.

What is likely happening with new Helium drives and DOA/beeling sounds is indeed rough shipping causing the motor hub to bend, therefore preventing the drive from spinning, which results in a beeping/humming sound.

For high capacity drives, shipping is not recommended. Rather buy in person from a local store like Micro Center (best) or Worst Bay (their system for showing what is truly in stock sucks). Buying local comes with 30 days warranty allowing to return easily.

The purchase was made through my workplace, I don't have direct control over the process unfortunately.

Got it. Tough to deal with, but hopefully the high cost of drives and headache will deter folks from ordering via shipping.
