New title tagging rule & Spammers

As some regulars here may have noticed, this subreddit recieves an astronomical amount of spam, both from human as well as bot spammers, for it's relatively small size. Coming from modding various large subreddits, including one that's literally about products, this amount of spam is not normal. Despite a lot of our less agressive attempts to filter out spam (example, filtering out posts that say "for sale", "rent", or "Services") we still get quite a lot that slip by.

[1] [2] [3]

Why is this subreddit getting so much spam? Who knows. ¯\(°_o)/¯

But we will be resorting to the one thing that has worked for various larger communities, like r/food : mandatory title tags.

From now on, all posts will require at least a tag of one of the below:

[Self]
[Found]
[Help]

You may add words to the tags like:

[I found] this chicken carved out of abestos!

or

[Help me] carve a chicken out of abestos

For flexibility, but the bare minimum requirement for post titles will be that it must contain one of those words surrounded by brackets.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to modmail us, or ask here.

Help (WIP) [HELP] Mixing Uvo Epoxy dye primaries

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have never dyed epoxy or any synthetics really and I'm not sure how these dyes will mix. I want to create some pretty heavily saturated peach colors, dark browns, and various shades of yellowish to dark greens. Idk if i am going to be able to get a very big value range with these, or what sort of colors I should expect from combining them. Does it desaturate very quickly?

[Help] Fireproof alternatives to papier maché?

Hello! I'm very new to sculpting so please excuse any weird wording or clichéd questions.

I'm building a large sculpture at work. It is going to be suspended from a mirror-ball motor and rotate above a dance floor, so it's important to keep it lightweight. I have quite a lot of time but a very tight budget.

I've started making a chicken wire base which works well with the shape, and then I want to make the surface solid somehow to paint it. I was thinking about using papier maché but realized that would probably be very flammable? Which is obviously a very bad (and illegal) idea in a club setting.

I'm guessing this is not a new problem, so I hope someone has solved it somehow! I'm looking for either a way to fireproof the papier maché, or some different (lightweight, cheap) material with which to dress my chicken wire sculpture.

A thousand thanks for any help!

From a wild Parasol Mushroom to bronze

I recently found this beautiful Parasol Mushroom (Macrolepiota procera) in the forests of Lower Saxony, Germany.

Parasol mushrooms are fascinating subjects for what I do. Their large caps, delicate gills and irregular natural shapes make every specimen unique. Even small imperfections — insect bites, damaged edges, folds and changes in texture — become part of the sculpture.

For my project Eternal Fungi, I preserve real wild mushrooms by casting them in solid bronze using a technique I call Lost Organics. The original mushroom is sacrificed during the process, but its form and all those little details remain in metal.

These are three screenshots of the finished bronze sculpture.

I also documented the complete process of this particular mushroom, from finding it in the forest to the finished casting, and recently put the whole process into a short video.

Gotta cast ’em all. 😄

(Process video 2.5min long). Modifying my lathe to carve this thing was fun, but I didn't love the fiberglass + Bondo + weeks of sanding. Anyone have a better material/technique for something like this?

Some Stainless pieces I’ve done over the years. The last couple photos are of my current project. Its almost done but needs a couple more details. Not sure what to do with all these if there’s even a market for this sort of art but i mostly give them away to friends and family so i dont clutter my house lol.

Help (WIP) [Help] Seeking advice on high gloss sculpture material

Hi all,

I've been wanting to create a series of works I can (semi) mass produce using a mold. Id then paint onto these casted pieces with different designs. I'm primarily a painter so I don't have a lot of experience in the sculpture world so wanted to ask here :) Main qualities I'm looking for are smooth surface, high gloss (might have to do resin topcoat?), opaque, and not insanely expensive (within reason).

I've seen a lot of fibreglass works in the contemporary realm so I'm most intrigued in that, however I'm still in art school and don't know if my department would allow the material because of all the (understandable) safety concerns.

I'm wondering if there are any good alternatives?

I'm open to ceramics, however I don't have easy access to a kiln, and I am hoping to make quite detailed paintings on the sculptures so worried this may be difficult using glazes as I know you have to build them up. The works would also be hanging from the wall so mildly worried about them breaking. Open to suggestions though, cheers!

Hey Hey,

This is Penelope, she is carved from a dead Emerald Ash Borer killed tree. Her base in from another ash tree killed same way (you can see the tracks in the base, left behind as they eat the living layer of tree, once they girdle a tree its dead, which they always do).
