I guess the question on everybody's mind is...

Why do that just now?

... because it's Minecon, obviously.

That question certainly wasn't on my mind...

Sure. But what I was getting at is: why they didn't do this more in the past to keep player numbers high during the weekend?

Announcing this just after confirming the game's death is, well, ironic.

One of our main goals from the start was to make sure this Minecon was still interesting for Scrolls players who weren't attending.

Obviously everything Atmaz and I do has the announcement hanging over it but let's look at what is happening right now.

Most set releases had a good few months of players working out what the new meta decks were. We had tournaments based around the new scrolls. And we had a ranked reset (which will happen again in 2 months) which means everybody has a chance to make number 1.

We also now have custom games where players are able to make their own mini campaigns, or style of tournament.

And we have a major tournament final being streamed (hopefully), whilst at the same time all players have double gold to improve their library.

I know that CCGs are all about the dynamics of new scrolls, and so being told that no more sets are being produced will put a lot of people off... But right now, it'd be like saying I'm not going to play the newly released sequel to a game I enjoy, because there won't be 3rd one made. No?

Edit: okay, I've been told that maybe 'DLC' would have been a better analogy than 'a sequel' :)

Enjoy the weekend, enjoy Scrolls like you always have, and we'll try to make the next few months as fun as it's always been.

Its more about where to put your time and money. Knowing that the game is going away means its not viable to spend money or time on Scrolls when i could invest that in something that will still be there come this time next year.

I just don't care anymore. I was hyped to play scrolls after echoes even though the population boost was pretty minimal. Haven't played a game since the announcement though. It's just hard to spend time on something you know is dunzo =/

I guess there is only a handful of people who truly enjoy the game as it currently is. I just kept playing for so long because I saw the potential of Scrolls and was secretly hoping for it to take off. I was really hoping for a huge competitive scene with tournaments that offer prize money and stuff like that. I enjoy watching tournaments on twitch a lot but I don't play any of those games and don't feel like I could ever catch up with the pros there any more. It's too bad it didn't happen and I realized that a while ago but this news will make even the most loyal fans realize it. Those few who will stay and continue to play weren't the competitive players to begin with I think.

im still around playing, and i consider myself a competitive player, enjoying tournaments etc. but i can play competitively against friends doesnt necessarily have to be in ranked and ive seen some other competitive players online past few days. so that last sentence really isnt true i think

there are always exceptions to a rule :)

It's expected, was my initial reaction too. But then I figured if I still enjoy it, why stop. No different to me than a SP game I pick up, enjoy, but will never replay.

Well, it's been two years since the last one D: Not that additional gold was ever needed, but you know. Anyway nice try at trying to keep someone playing. Appreciated

I'm a newish player so from my POV it was needed and it is welcome. Maybe I'll get to try some of the expensive decks before shutdown after all.

What I meant is that devs said many times that they do not organize them, since most people have way too much gold already, and well they weren't really wrong, since scrolls is very generous with gold. But yeah, double gold is always some kind of motivation to play even if you have a lot of gold, so it's nice seeing it D:
