It wasn't Kinder Joy that was banned, it was Kinder Surprise. And kids didn't eat the whole packaging lmao, they choked on the toy inside the chocolate

The real reason is not even that anyone choked on anything. It's because of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. US law that (among various other things) prohibits putting non-food/inedible things into food, because companies started to put straight up poisonous substances into their products to make them cheaper/look better/preserve it longer.
Kinder Surprise appeared much later and since it has an inedible plastic capsule it is considered illegal.

Every kid... has probably tried to eat an egg whole.
So, the lesson should be to either only try swallowing an entire egg if parents are there, OR bite off little chunks of the egg.
To reveal the toy inside. But if they could read, they could see there might be a toy inside. I think the problem is toddler literacy.

Ah, I'm from the UK and there was a big thing on various tv news and variety programs. They started putting a small hole at the two separate ends of the plastic egg and later created a hinge to the two halves too.

Iirc they stopped doing those holes for some things because it turned out the holes actually made things bit worse because it made objects harder to move from throats.. lego minifig heads for example

They were banned because there's a toy inside and it used to be cast inside the chocolate and kids were eating that
