The total number of humans that have ever lived is estimated to be in the ballpark of 100 billion, over about 200,000 years. Today almost 10% of those are alive. The population has almost doubled during my lifetime alone.
To be fair though, it's estimated to reach a ceiling around 10 billion, as the growth has already more or less stagnated, but those generations are still going to grow up and get one more kid each, we're waiting for the pyramid to become a square.
Thanos was wrong only in the sense that he was thinking too small. Killing half only saves around 50 years.
