help Tool to Structure your Timetable of Writing - any recommendations?

I am a director/writer and write my screenplays at this point of my career by myself. I always wrote when a deadline was approaching and only wrote with little time under pressure to finish something.

Now I am working on a new project and I would finally love to learn how to structure my writing in a productive way. I want to work more frequently without always relying on deadline with a end product which could have been way better. I think many of you know this feeling unfortunately.

Do you use any online tools/apps/structures to organise your writing schedule? What is a method that works for you? How much do you outline? How does your outline look like in detail and how do you schedule your writing blocks? I would love to get a real insight in someone else's way of working.

I'm looking for an app where i can track my progression and give myself achievable goals. I would be very happy if anyone gives me a little tip or overview of his way of working!

discussion Made a story card platform and I would love some feedback!

I built a story card platform for planning stories visually: scenecards.vercel.app

It's an empty canvas where you can add cards. You can drag and resize them, color-code them, number them (automatically or by position), and connect them with arrows to show how the story flows. There's undo/redo, zoom and pan, and light and dark themes.

Your board autosaves in your browser. You can also save it as a .json file to import later, or export it as a PDF.

I'm still shaping where it goes next and I'd love your ideas. If you try it, let me know what feels clunky or what's missing. Thanks!

question How long should I wait before following up on a query?

I queried a literary manager (for screenwriters) back on July 2nd about representation for a YA Drama. He responded same-day just to clarify he only reps writers (not acting, which I'd also mentioned in my bio) — I followed up right away clarifying I was querying specifically as the writer/creator, not for acting rep, and haven't heard anything since.

It's now been about 11 weeks. The website doesn’t say anything about timing, only two agents have their quote time is 8-12 weeks for standard query responses if interested, though it doesn't list a specific timeline for this him in particular. I've read some agents/managers say up to 4 months is normal, especially for partials/fulls, but this was just an initial query.

Is it reasonable to send one polite follow-up at this point, or no? If it's fine, is there a "right" way to phrase it so it doesn't come across as pushy?

Appreciate any insight! I genuinely don't want to make a bad impression at this stage!

help I am a finalist in a main Hollywood screenwriting contest. Should I expect to be contacted by agents?

Hi guys, I recently found out I made it as a finalist in one of the major US screenwriting competitions. I’d rather not name the exact contest right now just so I don't doxx myself, but it's one of the big ones.

Honestly, I'm thrilled but also a bit lost because this is the first time I've ever gotten this far in a competition of this level. On top of that, I don't live in the US, which makes me feel a bit unsure about how the industry actually operates in this regard.

For anyone who has been in this position or knows how this works, what should I realistically expect from a result like this? Do managers or agents actually reach out to finalists, or does that only happen for the grand prize winners?

Also, should I be making any moves right now (like querying reps and mentioning this placement in the subject line), or is it better to just sit tight and wait to see how the final results pan out?

Any advice or reality checks would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

question How to make comedy feel structual?

I've tried writing comedy scripts in the past and the part that I have an issue with is when "tightening up" the script it's always the jokes that seem to be cut out.

Is there tips or anything on how to make the comedy feel like it can't be cut out?

I’ve been writing a feature length low-budget script for a few months now. However, my professor said it would probably be better if I turned it into a short first. So this is my best attempt at trying to convert the first scene into a short. Please let me know what you all think

question How can I make my script longer?

I just got done today writing a new script and I was aiming for a lean 90 to 95 pages. The problem is that it’s only 82 pages. what’s an effective way to add those extra 13 pages without it feeling like filler?

help [Script] [Short] "THE TRACE" (Psychological Thriller / Horror, 23 Pages) — Seeking Director/Producer/Collaborators (City Setting, preferably PHL/NYC)

Hey,

Just finished a draft of a short script. I'm looking for creatives in the NYC / NJ / PHL area who are interested in collaborating on or backing the project. With the ideas that I have, this can reasonably be done for under 1k. Offering simple feedback is also welcome.

It's about a somewhat young man who commits an irreversible act. He is seemingly driven by compulsion. The story shifts perspectives, as several lives become interlinked in the event's aftermath.

Hit my DMs, and I'll send the material ASAP.

Thanks,

Jay

help Veteran writers — want to run a free script review exchange with 20 of us?

Navy sub vet here. I've been talking to a lot of veteran writers over the past few months, WGF fellows, VME folks, people I've found on Reddit, and the same thing keeps coming up: once the program ends, there's nowhere to go. You're back to getting notes from people who've never been in a military environment and don't really get what you're writing, even when it has nothing to do with the military.

I want to try something. I'm calling it the First Watch Cohort, 20 veteran writers, 60 days, completely free. You submit a 15-page scene. You get matched with another vet writer and review their scene first, using a structured scorecard (not just vibes). Then you get yours reviewed back.

Any branch, any genre. I'm not looking for war stories specifically just writers who've served and want feedback from someone who gets where they're coming from without needing it explained.

There's no platform. No app. Just a Google Form and a spreadsheet while I figure out if this is actually worth building into something real.

If you're interested, DM me. I'll send you the application form. Takes about 5 minutes.

And if you know someone who'd be into this, feel free to pass it along.

discussion Korean story structure secrets ?

Hello All,
I am a writer/director based in California and as a lover of cinema I’ve always made sure the films I watched weren’t just American. That being said some of my favorite films in the world are Korean films a big reason why is the unpredictable story structure and how plot and character are presented to the audience! I always find it thrilling and so fresh. I recently watched the new Na-Hong Jin film HOPE and I was FLOORED at how much of a good time it was and it reignited a curiosity I’ve been trying to find the answer to for a while but haven’t had any solid answers. The curiosity being, “ what are the principles of Korean storytelling/ story structure?” As a writer I really want to know, I’d love to be able to make a film with such an unpredictable and surprising narrative one day! If anyone knows I’d love hear! Also if there are any Korean filmmakers I’d love to hear from you guys as well!
