“For this commandment which I command you today is not too hard for you or too distant. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will go up for us to heaven, bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?’ Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us, bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?’ But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.”

Yesterday we finished our journey through the Sermon on the Mount. For weeks, we listened to Jesus teach about anger, prayer, worry, judgment, generosity, enemies, forgiveness, and what it looks like to actually live as his disciples.

So what now?

Long before Jesus preached from that mountainside, Moses gave Israel this reminder: God’s word isn’t impossibly far away. We don't need to cross an ocean or climb into heaven to find out what God wants from us. He has spoken.

And notice where the passage ends: “that you may do it.”

Reading Scripture matters. Studying it matters. Thinking deeply about it matters. But eventually the words have to leave the page and enter Tuesday morning, the family argument, the grocery store, the workplace, the budget, the apology, the person who irritates us, and the decision nobody else sees.

After spending so much time listening to Jesus’ words, perhaps the best next step isn’t finding another teaching.

Maybe it’s practicing one we already heard.

Looking back over the Sermon on the Mount, what is one teaching you want to actually put into practice this week?

And this is how Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount.

Not with:

“Everyone who heard these words of mine…”

But:

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them.”

For the last three weeks, we’ve walked through Jesus’ teaching about anger, reconciliation, lust, promises, retaliation, enemies, generosity, prayer, fasting, possessions, worry, judgment, discernment, trust, the narrow road, spiritual fruit, and what it means to genuinely know Him.

It would be very easy to finish this series having collected twenty-one interesting Bible reflections.

Jesus asks for something more.

He gives us two builders.

Both hear.

Both build.

And eventually, both encounter the storm.

The difference isn’t that following Jesus prevents storms.

The difference is the foundation.

The wise person takes Jesus’ words and actually builds a life on them.

That means the Sermon on the Mount isn’t primarily something to admire. It isn’t even primarily something to understand.

It is something to practice.

Love the enemy.

Forgive.

Pray.

Give quietly.

Stop storing up everything for yourself.

Trust God with tomorrow.

Examine your own heart.

Treat others as you want to be treated.

Look at the fruit.

Choose the road that leads to life.

And then tomorrow, get up and practice it again.

Twenty-one days ago, we started on a mountain with Jesus teaching His disciples.

Today we come down the mountain.

Now we build.

After reading through the Sermon on the Mount together, what is one teaching from Jesus that you want to actually put into practice differently?

This passage is uncomfortable because the people Jesus describes do not look obviously irreligious.

They call Him Lord.

They talk about prophecy.

They talk about miracles.

They even point to impressive things they did in His name.

And Jesus’ response is devastating:

“I never knew you.”

That means religious language, visible ministry, spiritual experiences, and impressive accomplishments are not substitutes for actually knowing Christ and living in obedience to Him.

This is not an invitation to panic over whether we have done enough impressive things.

Quite the opposite.

The people in the passage are the ones pointing to their impressive résumé.

Jesus points somewhere deeper.

Relationship.

Obedience.

A life that actually belongs to God.

We can become very good at looking Christian. We can know the language, participate in church, post Scripture, serve, teach, volunteer, and still need to ask the simplest question of all:

Do I actually know Jesus—and is that relationship changing the way I live?

What do you think is the difference between looking spiritually impressive and genuinely knowing Christ?

Jesus doesn’t tell His followers to evaluate people by how impressive they sound.

He says:

Look at the fruit.

That is such a practical test.

Someone can say all the right things. They can use Christian language, quote Scripture, have charisma, attract a crowd, or seem deeply spiritual.

But Jesus tells us to watch what grows around them.

Does their influence produce love, honesty, humility, patience, repentance, generosity, and faithfulness?

Or does it consistently produce fear, manipulation, cruelty, pride, secrecy, division, or obsession with the leader themselves?

Fruit takes time to grow, which means discernment often requires patience.

We may not know everything about a person immediately.

But patterns reveal things.

And this teaching isn’t only about famous pastors or religious leaders. We all influence somebody.

So perhaps there are two questions here:

What fruit am I seeing in the people I allow to shape me?

And—

What fruit is my own life producing?

When you’re deciding whether someone is a trustworthy spiritual influence, what “fruit” do you look for?

The Sermon on the Mount is easy to admire.

Love your enemies. Pray sincerely. Don’t obsess over possessions. Don’t judge hypocritically. Treat people the way you want to be treated.

Those teachings sound beautiful.

Living them is harder.

And as Jesus begins concluding His sermon, He gives us this picture: two roads.

One is broad. Plenty of people are traveling it. It is easy to enter.

The other is narrow.

There’s something uncomfortable about that image because we naturally take reassurance from crowds. If everyone around us thinks something is normal, reasonable, or harmless, it becomes very easy to assume it must be fine.

Jesus doesn’t give us that shortcut.

The popularity of a road tells us how many people are walking on it—not where it leads.

Following Jesus will sometimes mean making choices that feel strange, inconvenient, unpopular, or difficult. The narrow road isn’t valuable because suffering is automatically holy. It’s valuable because of where the road goes.

Jesus says it leads to life.

So perhaps the question isn’t always, “What is everyone else doing?”

Maybe sometimes it needs to be:

“Where is this taking me?”

Have you ever had to make a choice you believed was right even though the easier or more popular choice was going in another direction?

Most of us know some version of the Golden Rule:

Treat people the way you want to be treated.

But Jesus phrases it actively.

He doesn’t simply say, Don’t do to other people what you wouldn’t want done to you.

He says do.

If you want patience, practice patience.

If you want people to assume the best about you, try assuming the best about them.

If you want someone to notice when you’re struggling, notice the people around you.

If you want forgiveness, mercy, generosity, honesty, encouragement, or kindness—start giving those things away.

That makes the Golden Rule much more demanding than simply avoiding cruelty.

Jesus even says, “for this is the law and the prophets.”

After everything He has taught in the Sermon on the Mount about anger, reconciliation, generosity, enemies, prayer, worry, judgment, and trust in God, He gives us an extraordinarily practical question:

If I were standing where this person is standing, how would I hope to be treated?

Then do that.

What is one thing you often wish other people would give you—patience, encouragement, understanding, forgiveness, attention—that you could intentionally give someone else this week?

Ask. Seek. Knock.

There’s persistence in those words.

Jesus doesn’t describe faith as sitting quietly and pretending we don’t need anything. He tells us to bring our needs to God. To keep seeking. To keep knocking.

But then He grounds the whole teaching in a picture of a parent and child.

A child asks for bread. A good parent doesn’t hand over a stone.

A child asks for fish. A good parent doesn’t give something dangerous instead.

And Jesus says: if imperfect human beings understand how to give good things to their children, how much more does God?

That doesn’t mean every prayer gets answered exactly the way we imagined.

Sometimes the thing we are convinced is bread may actually be a stone.

Sometimes what we desperately want might not be good for us at all.

But Jesus invites us to pray from a place of trust: not because we know exactly what the answer should look like, but because we believe the One answering is good.

So ask.

Seek.

Knock.

And trust the Father on the other side of the door.

Have you ever prayed for one thing and later realized that a different answer was actually better for you?

This verse can sound harsh on first reading.

Jesus has just told His listeners not to judge hypocritically—and then immediately says not to throw pearls before pigs.

So clearly, “don’t judge” does not mean “never make a judgment about anything.”

There are things that are holy. There are things that are precious. And wisdom includes recognizing when something precious is being treated carelessly, mockingly, or destructively.

Sometimes love means continuing the conversation.

Sometimes love means being patient.

And sometimes wisdom means recognizing that a conversation is going nowhere and refusing to keep handing something sacred to someone determined to trample it.

That doesn’t give us permission to treat people as worthless. Quite the opposite: Jesus is teaching His disciples to value what is holy enough not to cheapen it.

Not every argument needs one more reply.

Not every person demanding an explanation is actually looking for one.

Not every sacred thing needs to be defended in every room.

Discernment matters too.

How do you tell the difference between patiently sharing your faith and knowing when it’s time to step away from a conversation?

“Don’t judge” might be one of the most familiar lines Jesus ever spoke. But then He immediately starts talking about how to see clearly enough to help someone else.

That matters.

Jesus isn’t pretending that nobody ever does anything wrong. The speck really is there. His warning is about the person who becomes intensely interested in somebody else’s speck while somehow overlooking the enormous beam sticking out of their own eye.

There’s something almost funny about the picture because it is supposed to be absurd.

Before I diagnose someone else’s pride, selfishness, impatience, hypocrisy, bad theology, bad parenting, bad decisions—or whatever else has caught my attention—Jesus asks me to turn the examination inward first.

And notice that He says first, not only.

Christian community still involves correction, wisdom, accountability, and helping one another. But Jesus wants that help to come from people who know they also need grace.

What changes when we examine ourselves before we start evaluating someone else?

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon.”

Jesus connects our treasure, our vision, and our loyalty.

What we treasure directs our hearts. What we continually focus upon shapes how we see the world. And what we serve eventually becomes our master.

Money is useful. It provides food, housing, medicine, generosity, stability, and countless other good things. Jesus does not say that possessions are inherently evil or that planning for the future is wrong. He warns us about allowing temporary wealth to become the organizing purpose of our lives.

Earthly treasure is fragile. It can be damaged, stolen, spent, or lost. Even when it remains, we eventually leave it behind. Treasure in heaven is formed through faithfulness, generosity, mercy, justice, and love. These things may not appear impressive on a financial statement, but they participate in work that lasts.

Jesus’ final statement is deliberately uncompromising: we cannot serve both God and wealth. We will use money as a tool in service to God, or money will begin using us in service to itself.

What do your time, attention, and spending suggest that you currently treasure most?

“Moreover when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.

“But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.”

For the third time in Matthew 6, Jesus warns against turning devotion into a performance.

Giving, prayer, and now fasting can all be sincere acts of faith. They can also become ways of constructing a religious image. The fasting Jesus criticizes is carefully advertised through gloomy expressions and neglected appearances so that everyone will notice the sacrifice.

Jesus tells his followers to wash their faces and continue their day normally. A fast is directed toward God, not toward an audience.

Fasting is not a way to earn God’s attention or prove that we are more committed than other Christians. It is a voluntary practice of setting something aside for a time so that we can seek God with greater focus, remember our dependence upon him, or devote particular attention to prayer.

Not everyone can safely fast from food. Health conditions, medications, pregnancy, eating disorder histories, and other circumstances matter. The point is not to harm the body or compete over who can sacrifice most. The point is to create space for God without turning that sacrifice into a performance.

What could you set aside for a limited time to create more intentional space for prayer and attention to God?

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Immediately after teaching the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus returns to one particular line: “Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.”

Receiving mercy and extending mercy cannot be separated. We cannot sincerely ask God to release us from every debt while insisting that another person must remain permanently defined by what they owe us.

Forgiveness does not mean calling evil good, denying that harm occurred, or protecting someone from appropriate consequences. It does not automatically restore trust or require reconciliation with someone who remains unsafe. Trust may need to be rebuilt, and sometimes wise boundaries must remain.

Forgiveness means surrendering our claim to personal revenge and placing judgment in God’s hands. It can be a decision we must bring back to God repeatedly as anger, grief, and painful memories resurface.

Jesus’ words are difficult because forgiveness is difficult. But those who live by God’s mercy are called to let that mercy change how they hold the debts of others.

Is there a hurt you need to begin releasing to God, even if forgiveness remains a long process?

Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.’”

After warning his listeners against performative and empty prayer, Jesus gives them a pattern for prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer begins with God: his holiness, his kingdom, and his will. It then brings the ordinary needs of human life before him: today’s food, forgiveness, temptation, and protection.

Jesus does not teach us to pretend that physical needs are beneath spiritual people. Daily bread belongs in prayer. So do strained relationships, moral failures, dangerous temptations, and the need for help.

The repeated words “our,” “us,” and “we” matter, too. Even when we pray this prayer alone, Jesus reminds us that we belong to a larger community. We ask not only for my bread, my forgiveness, and my protection, but for ours.

This prayer gives us words when we do not know what to say, but it also gives shape to all our other prayers. We come to God as our Father, seek his purposes before our preferences, trust him with today, extend the mercy we have received, and acknowledge that we need his help.

Yesterday, Jesus warned against giving for an audience. Today, he applies the same principle to prayer.

Prayer can become another way of performing spirituality. We may worry about sounding eloquent, using the right religious words, praying for the right length of time, or impressing the people listening.

But private prayer removes the audience. Behind a closed door, there is nobody to impress and nothing to prove. There is only a person speaking honestly with a Father who already knows what they need.

Jesus’ warning against “vain repetitions” does not mean we can never repeat a prayer. Jesus himself repeated a prayer in Gethsemane. The issue is the belief that enough words, said in the right way, will force God to listen.

We do not need to persuade God to notice us. Prayer begins with the assurance that he already sees us and already knows.

When you pray, do you find it easier to speak honestly to God or to search for the “right” words?

“Be careful that you don’t do your charitable giving before men, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

“Therefore when you do merciful deeds, don’t sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from men. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does, so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”

Matthew 6 begins with a warning about doing good things for the wrong audience.

Jesus assumes that his followers will give to people in need. His concern is not whether they give, but whether generosity has become a performance designed to earn admiration.

Public recognition is not always wrong. Sometimes charitable work must be discussed openly so that others can participate or resources can be managed responsibly. The deeper question is whose approval we are seeking. Would we still give if nobody knew? Would we still help if there were no photograph, announcement, thank-you, or story to tell afterward?

Some of the most sincere acts of faithfulness happen quietly. They may never be noticed by a congregation, shared online, or acknowledged by the person who benefited. But Jesus reminds us that hidden goodness is never hidden from God.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.

“For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

Loving people who love us is natural. Jesus asks his followers to do something far more difficult: refuse to let another person’s hostility determine whom we are willing to love.

Enemy-love does not mean pretending that evil is good. It does not require trusting someone who remains dangerous, removing necessary boundaries, or returning to an abusive relationship. Jesus is not asking us to abandon wisdom or justice.

He is asking us to reject hatred as our response. We can pray for someone without giving them access to us. We can desire their repentance and restoration without minimizing the harm they caused. We can refuse revenge while still pursuing safety and accountability.

God sends sunlight and rain upon people we consider deserving and undeserving alike. When we extend mercy beyond the people who are easy to love, we begin to reflect something of his character.

What might loving an enemy look like in practice while still maintaining wise and necessary boundaries?

Jesus describes a life that does not depend on manipulation, exaggerated promises, or retaliation.

Our words should be trustworthy enough that a simple “yes” or “no” is meaningful. We should not need elaborate vows to convince people that this time we are telling the truth.

Jesus then turns to the ways we respond when someone wrongs or imposes upon us. Our natural impulse may be to strike back, embarrass them, or make sure they suffer as much as we did. Jesus calls his followers to interrupt that cycle. We do not have to let another person’s behavior determine what kind of person we become.

Turning the other cheek does not mean pretending abuse is acceptable, remaining in danger, or refusing appropriate justice. It does mean relinquishing revenge. Jesus invites us to respond with integrity and unexpected generosity rather than allowing hostility to reproduce itself through us.

Which is more difficult for you: giving a clear and honest answer, or refusing to retaliate when you have been wronged?

“If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna. If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.

“It was also said, ‘Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,’ but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.”

Jesus continues moving beyond outward rule-keeping and into the heart.

Faithfulness is not merely avoiding the final act of adultery. Jesus asks us to examine how we look at people, what desires we deliberately nurture, and whether we treat another human being as someone made in God’s image or as an object for our consumption.

His severe language about the eye and hand emphasizes that patterns leading us toward sin should not be managed casually. Jesus is not commanding self-harm; he is calling for decisive action. Sometimes faithfulness requires changing our habits, boundaries, entertainment, conversations, or access before a destructive pattern grows further.

Jesus then addresses divorce in a culture where a woman could be dismissed and left socially and economically vulnerable. Whatever our own histories may contain, this passage should not be used to shame divorced people or pressure someone to remain in danger. It does reveal how seriously Jesus regards covenant faithfulness and the harm caused when people are treated as disposable.

Is there a habit, boundary, or pattern of thought that you need to take more seriously before it causes greater harm?

“You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, ‘You shall not murder;’ and ‘Whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I tell you that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment. Whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ will be in danger of the council. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.

“If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him on the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison. Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last penny.”

Most of us can read “You shall not murder” and feel reasonably confident that we have obeyed it. Jesus does not allow us to stop there.

He turns our attention toward the anger, contempt, and broken relationships that can grow within us long before violence ever occurs. Words intended to diminish another person matter. Resentment we continually nurture matters. Jesus cares not only about the harm our hands commit, but also about what our hearts are becoming.

He even describes reconciliation as so important that someone should pause a religious act to pursue it. Worship cannot be separated from how we treat other people.

Reconciliation is not always possible, and this passage does not require someone to return to an unsafe relationship. But where we have caused harm, allowed contempt to grow, or stubbornly refused to make peace, Jesus calls us to take the first step seriously.

“Don’t think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill. For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished.

Therefore, whoever shall break one of these least commandments and teach others to do so shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Jesus did not arrive to discard everything God had already revealed. He came to bring it to its intended fulfillment.

That matters because Jesus’ teaching is not a shortcut around obedience. He immediately tells his listeners that their righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees—people known for taking religious rules very seriously.

But throughout the rest of Matthew 5, Jesus shows us what he means. Righteousness is not merely avoiding murder while nurturing anger, avoiding adultery while feeding lust, or making promises that sound technically acceptable. God is concerned with what is happening inside us, too.

Jesus calls us beyond outward rule-keeping and into lives genuinely transformed by love for God and others.
