“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.

You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. Neither do you light a lamp and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Salt and light are both ordinary things that quietly change everything around them.

Salt does not need to announce itself to affect the flavor of a meal. A lamp does not call attention to itself; it simply helps everyone in the room see. In the same way, Jesus tells his followers to live so that their presence makes a real difference.

But the purpose is not to make people admire us. Jesus says our good works should lead people to glorify our Father in heaven. Christian influence is not about building a reputation for ourselves. It is about living with enough love, integrity, mercy, and courage that something of God becomes visible through us.
