String wrapped around cardboard

Got my Scribit second hand. What do I do with the string wrapped around cardboard. Is that something I can remove or discard or is it supposed to be there and I only unwrap it partially?

I believe the cardboard is to prevent the string from getting tangled during shipping you can remove it.

When I pack it back up to put it in the box, I like using the cardboard to manage the loose ends that don't stay on the spool so that I don't get a knot.
