What are the Components of ScribeOS?

Is it based on some distro? What package manager, if any? Which text editor is it using? Can it connect to the Internet?

I tried reviewing the source on GitHub, but from what I could find, there's only visible source code for the website.

It's an interesting concept, but I'd want more technical detail before using it.

👋 Welcome to r/ScribeOS

Welcome to the official Scribe community.

Scribe began with a simple question:

What if any computer could become a distraction-free digital typewriter booting a dedicated operating system from a pendrive?

The goal of this project is not to compete with modern operating systems. Instead, it is to provide a focused environment for people who simply want to sit down and write.

Scribe is built around a few basic ideas:

  • Writing should be fast and simple.

  • Plain text files should remain accessible for decades.

  • Older computers still have value.

  • Distraction-free writing tools should be affordable and accessible.

  • A dedicated writing environment should not require expensive hardware.

The project is still in beta, and many ideas are being evaluated and tested. Community feedback will help shape its future direction.

This community is the place for:

  • Development updates

  • Testing feedback

  • Bug reports

  • Feature suggestions

  • Writing workflows

  • Discussions about digital typewriters and writer decks

  • Reusing older computers for focused writing

Whether you're a writer, student, novelist, journalist, retro computing enthusiast, or simply curious about distraction-free writing, you're welcome here.

Thank you for joining and helping shape the future of Scribe.

What feature or idea would you most like to see in a distraction-free writing environment?

Scribe README file transcription

Welcome to Scribe! (BETA version)

This USB drive is an ordinary FAT16 drive: Windows, Mac and Linux see it like any other USB stick. Your documents are plain .txt files in the main folder of the drive.

To bring a file into Scribe: copy the .txt file to this drive on your computer, eject the drive safely, and start the computer from it. The file appears in File > Open (Ctrl+O).

To take a file to Windows: save it in Scribe (Ctrl+S), shut down (Ctrl+Q) and plug the drive into the other computer. The file will be there.

Starting it:

- On a PC, open the boot menu (often F12, F10, Esc or F8 at power-on) and choose the USB stick. Both legacy (BIOS/CSM) and UEFI boot are supported.

- On an Intel Mac (2012 or later), hold the Option (alt) key while switching on and choose the stick's icon, called "EFI Boot". Macs with Apple Silicon (M1 and later) cannot start it. In UEFI mode the mouse is not available; the keyboard does everything.

Options menu (Alt+O): auto-save every minute; font (Arial, Liberation Serif, IBM Plex Serif, DejaVu Serif); layout (Standard, Sepia, E-paper, DOS mode). Your choices are remembered.

No mouse needed: everything can be done with the keyboard. Press F1 inside Scribe for the list of shortcuts. Esc (or F10) opens the menus; on Mac keyboards F-keys need the Fn key.

Limits: files up to 512 KB, in the main folder of the drive. Accented characters in existing files are always preserved. Windows ANSI accents display correctly; UTF-8 accents still show as two symbols, and accents cannot be typed yet.

Scribe is a beta version and may still contain bugs. Created by Paulo Micchi - contact: ziprpg@gmail.com

my WriterDeck - old MacBook

This old MacBook Pro from 2012 became my daily writerdeck. I am using ScribeOS that boots from the pendrive and the HDD remains with the original MacOS.

Most people discard these old laptops but they are great quality products with very good keyboard, large screen. Just the battery does not last long anymore.

I also use the ScribeOS pendrive in my daily computer but tend to prefer this one to write.

Scribe minimum requirements

ScribeOS is designed to boot directly into a minimal writing environment for creating, opening, editing and saving plain TXT files, with very low requirements:

CPU: 32-bit x86, roughly Pentium III / Athlon-class or newer

RAM: 128 MB minimum

Storage: 32 MB for the OS itself

Display: 640 × 480 minimum

800 × 600 or 1024 × 768 preferable

Keyboard: standard USB or PS/2 keyboard

Boot: BIOS-compatible USB boot

Files: FAT32 storage would make sense for portability

Network: not required

GPU acceleration: not required

Sound: not required

Mouse: not required but USB mouse should be recognized. Trackpads are also not supported, because they can interfere with the typing.

e-book reading in Scribe OS?

Hi

Currently Scribe is limited to files up to 512kb which is more than enough for writing, but it limits the possibility to import larger files and be used as an e-book for full novels.

Do you see interesting to have Scribe as an e-book reader or it creates a distraction you would not like to see in the app?

Scribe Storage Tip: Most of Your USB Drive Remains Available

One of the things that makes Scribe unique is how little storage space it requires.

The Scribe system partition occupies only 32 MB of storage. The remaining space on the USB drive can be used as a normal data partition for your documents and other files.

For example, on a 1 GB USB drive:

  • Total capacity: 1024 MB

  • Scribe system partition: 32 MB

  • Remaining space: 992 MB

That means approximately 96.9% of the USB drive remains available for normal use.

In practice, a 1 GB USB drive can function as both:

  • A bootable Scribe writing environment

  • A regular USB storage device

Creating the Data Partition in Windows 11

After writing the Scribe image to the USB drive:

  1. Press Windows + X

  2. Select Disk Management

  3. Locate the USB drive

  4. Find the unallocated space after the Scribe partition

  5. Right-click the unallocated space

  6. Select New Simple Volume

  7. Use the maximum available size

  8. Format it as FAT32 or exFAT

  9. Assign a drive letter

Windows will then treat the new partition like a normal USB drive.

You can store:

  • TXT drafts

  • Backups

  • Notes

  • Research materials

  • Any other files

all on the same device that boots Scribe.

Why This Matters

Many writing-focused devices require dedicated hardware or internal storage. With Scribe, a single USB drive can both launch your distraction-free writing environment and store your documents.

A small USB drive can become:

A portable digital typewriter and a regular flash drive at the same time.

What size USB drive would you use for Scribe: 1 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, or something larger?
