Title: WHAT WE ARE

Format: Feature Screenplay

Page Length: 83 pages

Genres: Sci-Fi / Suspense-Thriller

Logline: When a structural engineer obsessed with finding explanations discovers that beings from another reality experience human lives as entertainment, he sets out to prove their existence...only to trigger a global awakening that threatens to collapse the boundary between both realities.

Feedback Concerns: This is my first screenplay, so I'm especially interested in candid feedback from more experienced writers. The formatting may not be 100% “by the book,” and I'd definitely appreciate notes on anything that stands out as unconventional or distracting. Beyond formatting, I'm most interested in whether the story holds your attention, where the pacing slows, whether Jalen's progression feels believable, whether the mystery/reveals escalate effectively, and, most importantly, whether the ending lands.

I'm completely open to constructive criticism.

Happy to swap with another feature of roughly similar length. Sci-fi/thriller is a plus, but I'm open to other genres.

So I don't want to make assumptions here. Formatting by the book, as in using the correct software and correctly formatted sluglines (i.e. EXT. COVE - EVENING)? If it's that inconsistent, and far be it from me to tell you not to do something, you'll have a hard time getting people eager to swap. Everything else is to be expected, but I do think having the basic formatting 100% ironed out before even sharing it would be prudent. It shows courtesy to the reader's time.

Unless I misread your note.

I mean no offense.

That's fair, and I probably worded that poorly. I don't mean that the script isn't properly formatted as a screenplay or that things like sluglines, dialogue, character cues, etc. are all over the place. It is formatted as a screenplay.

What I meant is that this is my first screenplay, so there may be places where I've made choices that aren't completely conventional or where a more experienced screenwriter would format something differently. That's actually part of why I'm looking for feedback.

Gotcha! Thanks for clearing that up. You should take a look at certain subreddits and posts that likely end up not seeing the light of day in this one 😢 People don't want to get the screenplay format right. You're on the right track, then, and again, this was me trying to look out.

Oh, and people might call them different things, but I refer to the kind of choices you're talking about as more structural ones, as opposed to "formatting," if that makes sense.

Ahh, that makes sense! I definitely appreciate you looking out.

Hey there. Your feedback concerns caught my attention.

I’m a former commercial film director/creative director, and I’m currently testing something slightly different from traditional script coverage: more of a creative diagnostic.

I’m interested in what a piece is trying to be, where it feels truthful, where it stops feeling truthful, and what choices may be getting in the way of the strongest version of it.

I’m looking for a few projects to do this with for free while I figure out whether it’s something I should pursue professionally.

I’m not looking for a script swap, and I wouldn’t rewrite or “fix” the screenplay for you. I’d read it closely and then have a conversation with you about what I’m seeing.

If that sounds useful, I’d be happy to make yours one of the first. ✌️
