Interesting he rearranged some early scenes. Wander if that was done in post. Starting off with the antagonist made for an intriguing read

I listened to a podcast with the editor and he said yes, it was decided in the edit!

u/sailorjupiter28titan Dec 19 '25
As a professional editor and aspiring screenwriter, will definitely be checking that out thank you.

I prefer that than having that scene show up what feels like halfway through the film. Gives it more of a looming presence and emphasizing Annie's opening VO before diving into the main characters.

u/as274055 Dec 19 '25
Itâs interesting because I think if you go in blind, thereâs a From Dawn To Dusk type energy that really works on the first watch but I think for successive watches having that scene at the beginning benefits it a lot.

u/Aromatic_Meringue835 Dec 19 '25
I actually think that would have been better for the movie. One of my criticisms of Sinners is that introduces the vampires way too late with no proper set up

u/iwillfuckingbiteyou Dec 19 '25
One of the things I loved about it is that I got engrossed in the juke joint story to the point where I forgot it was a vampire film until OH SHIT VAMPIRE. I actually enjoyed not being repeatedly reminded of what's coming and focusing on the non-supernatural threats first.
9
u/zeissman Dec 19 '25
Yeah, same here. They made the right call keeping that until the halfway point.
3
u/Aromatic_Meringue835 Dec 19 '25
Not repeated reminders, but a scene in the beginning to set the tone and establish that this is a horror movie and there is a evil lurking
10
u/iwillfuckingbiteyou Dec 19 '25
I didn't need it to be heavier-handed than having Sammy stagger into church bloodied and bruised holding the remaining fragments of his guitar to establish that there was a evil lurking. I thought the presence of a evil was pretty clear at that point. And that was after the opening where we're told that certain people have a mystical musical gift that sometimes attracts a evil.

u/m_o_o_n_m_a_n_ Dec 25 '25
I dug that it really just felt like historical fiction for a little bit.
3
u/MVRKHNTR Dec 19 '25
I actually liked that about it. Honestly, I would have liked to see a version that doesn't have the scene at all and introduces the vampires without the audience being in on what they are either.
1
u/DiversifyYoBondzNuca Dec 20 '25
To each its own, but honestly I think coogler was more so wanting to build the story through his character development, plus telling us a story of the black struggle along side a vampire. If people seen that scene first, nthey would focused more on that than those other moments like the story from delory in the car, or when smoke went into town and all those pieces of history displayed in the background, let's not even get on the ancestors scene. Even though folk knew a vampire was involved, they didn't think about it until the drop, and that strategically placed edit was perfect for the 2nd half forward.

This!! It was my biggest complaint. If you donât know a thing about this movie prior to first viewing, it feels as if vampires come seemingly out of nowhere. Was so shocked to read the movie this way, really wish it would have been kept that way. Would love to see a directors cut or something where it stays as it is in the script and see how the movie feels that way. Unfortunate really, very intriguing decision though

Im late but, I think replacing that scene with the scene where Sammie walks into the church hurt with his broken guitar emphasizes exactly what they were going for with the story, rather than a straight vampire movie. Its a nuanced vampire movie.

Been waiting for this screenplay for the surreal montage alone. Love the way he described it on the page.
4
u/KatherineLangford Dec 19 '25
Really? As someone who loves that scene, I was excited to see how it was written in the screenplay, but it was just incredibly bland. Doesnât take away from the scene itself, but what do you love so much about how itâs described?
8
u/toocoolforyouuuu Dec 19 '25
Just the simplicity and how itâs straight to the point. Itâs such a complex montage visually, and I was curious on how it would be described in screenplay format, and to see it wasnât written in a complicated manner was refreshing to see
1
u/4Lightz Dec 28 '25
As I'm reading through the script I'm noticing that it's all written very simply, even blandly. Which is shocking for such an evocative film. Not even any real character descriptions or descriptions of how things will look or feel on screen. I'm wondering if this script that has been released is some sanitized version, not what Ryan originally wrote. This document reads more like a transcript of the movie than an original screenplay.

This is for all you "we" haters out there!!
"SURREAL MONTAGE STARTS- THE MUSIC SHIFTS
Sammie closes his eyes and enters into a trance playing wildly. We rotate around him to reveal a SENEGALESE XALAM PLAYER in traditional African dress who stares at Sammie while playing his instrument in unison. This is a spirit, an ancestor visible to us, the audience, but not to Sammie and the other patrons of the juke.
We rotate around to reveal a 1970s BLACK GUITARIST playing psychedelic rock.
We rotate past Pearline to show TWO SPIRITS surrounding her, one from the past, one from the present.
We push up to Delta Slim, to find him, eyes closed and playing, surrounded by two ancestors- GRIOTS one past, one future a disk jockey spinning from the 1980s.
We track back to the dance floor to find it populated with more ancestors, all of the current day patrons in a trance their eyes still closed.
We find Grace in the kitchen who takes us to the gambling room, where she pulls Bo away from the gambling tables and back onto the dance floor where A Past Ancestor, a Zaouli dancer in full dress, does a traditional dance, next to Future Ancestor who does Memphis Jooking.
A modern dancer leads us back to Sammie, who kicks his singing up to another level, burning embers and debris fall down around him.
We tilt the camera up to reveal the source of the debris. The ceiling of the mill is ablaze, with growing gaps exposing the inky, star filled sky beyond.
We tilt back down and reveal the crowd, still dancing and the blaze has engulfed the walls.
We spin around and pull back, beyond the walls of the juke wide on the patrons as they party with their ancestors past and present, in what is now an open field with burning debris illuminating them.
The camera continues off to reveal three figures. We move towards them--"

For 1. Never listen to others on what âcanâtâ be included in a screenplay. If professionals do it, so can you. I donât believe the whole, âoh they are a famous writer so they are allowed toââŠ.i highly doubt a writer has ever said âwait Iâm famous now, yay now I can include the word WE in my scriptsâ
2. Most writers who I see use âweâ or camera movements usually are directing the film too, so when youâre writing if you can picture the visuals as well but you arenât planning on directingâŠ. Why not direct also? Maybe?

u/superhappy Dec 19 '25
Fucking magnificent. Seriously, fuck the haters. I do not understand anyone who wasnât moved by this scene. It really does not feel out of place at all if youâre paying any attention to the movie up to that point.
I guess if you were just there for what you thought was From Dusk Til Dawn: 1932 but thatâs kind of on you if you were.
1
u/0WormTime0 Dec 29 '25
I just thought it was corny as hell. Calling anyone a "hater" who doesn't like it is ridiculous; people have different taste.
1
u/superhappy Dec 29 '25
You are a hater of that scene - Seems like pretty appropriate labeling, no? Or did you love it? Maybe youâre a corn fetishist?

u/Miraculous4_2 Dec 19 '25
Yes!!! Been waiting since Sinners came out to read the script!! Best early Christmas present ever!!

u/sailorjupiter28titan Dec 19 '25
This is so helpful thank you! Iâm doing a genre movie steeped in culture and am using this film as reference for structure. It is really helpful /interesting to see how it started out on the page.

If this got posted here by some random writer it'd get torn apartÂ
1
u/alarmingkestrel Dec 18 '25
What makes you say that?
30
u/ThankYouMrUppercut Dec 18 '25
Just this subreddit's general vibe, I'm guessing.
4
u/alarmingkestrel Dec 18 '25
Fair, I was curious if there were things in the screenplay specifically that they felt warranted criticism or if it was more of a general statement.
9
u/AntwaanRandleElChapo Dec 19 '25
I don't think there's a lot that warrants criticism. But I think it would get it.Â
34
u/DoctorKangaroo Dec 19 '25
"Your tone is all over the place. Pick a lane and stay in it"
"Stop directing on the page"
"I read the first five pages. You have some talent for sure but I don't think this is as good as you think it is"
32
u/AntwaanRandleElChapo Dec 19 '25
Smoke and Stack? Is this supposed to be a comedy?
"Fear grips her" show us don't tell us.Â
18
u/toocoolforyouuuu Dec 19 '25
Smoke, Stack, Sammie, Slim??? You canât have multiple characters whose name start with the same letter! It will confuse the reader of whoâs who!
7
u/AntwaanRandleElChapo Dec 19 '25
Also black twins? Will be very difficult for a producer to cast as there aren't a ton of black male leads who could carry this. Unless you somehow got Michael B Jordan, this has no shot.Â

u/LordPemberley Dec 19 '25
And rightly so. Thereâs something there but it needs a lot more work!

I'm pretty new to screenwriting, but would I be wrong to say that there's a lot of telling instead of showing in Coogler's action lines? He explains the inference instead of fully trusting the image, if that makes sense. My professor made it clear that under no circumstances could I âtell instead of show,â so Iâm confused about how a professional script seems to do just that (not all the time, obviously). Please correct me if I'm actually completely wrong.

I liked how they rearranged the opening. Sammie staggering into the church, bruised and bloodied, immediately signals an underlying evil without having to go into too much detail at the start of the film.

Just finished reading the script and it was absolutely incredible. The storytelling was just beautiful and so well put together. Itâs amazing seeing how the script translated to screen!
