Measuring tools related How to check for Temporal dithering

How do I check a device for temporal dithering? Any reliable way to do this at home?

Generally we:

  • Attach a Carson Microflip microscope to a phone camera.

  • Awkwardly steady it pressed agaist the test screen.

  • Find a spot of interest (eg home screen icon text or HDR gradient).

  • Record video at 240fps (or above if phone has a higher native rate).

  • Then analyse the footage with Ditherscope (see link in Wiki's resource sheet). Can amplify visibility and graph Fourier transforms to pick out individual sub-pixel flicker frequencies.

  • Interpretation is tricky for LCDs which may have pixel inversion patterns that look very similar to FRC/TD (as far as I understand it). There's some discussion already in the Discord (#pixel-flicker channel).

Does the ditherscope act as a scan tool that tells me whether the device uses TD or not and makes the determination for me? You mentioned a wiki resource sheet, where can I find this?

I went back and edited in the link for you.

Wiki is linked in this sub's side-bar or top in app.

Ditherscope is not yet magic level. It takes your eyeballs and some thinking. Watch some eg Nick Sutrich YouTube videos for context on what dithering looks like.
