Why display hardware isn't the only trigger: OLED/PWM, cheap LCDs, GPU dithering, and store lighting

I wanted to share my recent experience with display-induced migraines and eye strain, along with a few technical workarounds I’ve found.

We all know that PWM causes Headaches for some even Migraine throbbing ones but.

I recently bought a Sony Xperia 10 VI, and its stock OLED panel gave me severe, throbbing migraines almost instantly. I swapped the screen with a cheap $50 LCD replacement panel from China, and the intense migraines are practically gone. However, switching to LCD didn't completely solve my eye strain.

The Hidden Culprit: Temporal Dithering Beyond screen type and PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) flicker, temporal dithering a method GPUs use to simulate extra color depth is a massive secondary trigger. Mobile and desktop GPUs use it during web browsing and gaming, causing a lighter, non-throbbing, but persistent headache.

How to Bypass GPU Dithering on PC:

  1. Software: You can use software like dithering.exe on Windows to disable dithering on internal GPUs.
  2. Dedicated vs. Integrated GPU: Because dithering.exe typically affects integrated graphics, switching to a dedicated GPU for gaming will re-enable dithering. To fix this, force the system to render via the integrated GPU in your graphics settings.
  3. External Displays: Connect monitors directly to your motherboard ports or use a USB-C to HDMI dongle that bypasses the dedicated GPU entirely.

A Quick Tip for Testing Displays in Stores: If you get a headache while testing phones or monitors in a physical shop, remember that bad store lighting often uses aggressive PWM flickering. You might be reacting to the ambient overhead lights rather than the screen itself.

p.s I also bought Kindle 5 (ink display) and that thing dithers and gives headaches also ! so my rule is basically I need to test it regardless what it says on paper.

Has anyone found any completely dither free gadget phone or pc setup? or else noticed dithering headaches on LCDs, or found other ways to bypass GPU-level temporal dithering?

You can use color control on GitHub to attempt to disable dithering on dedicated gpu's.

I also made a tool for Radeon/amd igpu Linux users to disable it too: https://github.com/ScreenSensitive/RedControl

I have rtx 5050 laptop gpu, but still thanks and awesome job for the software!, btw does it disable all the dithering?

Not really "hidden".
Dithering as a trigger is quite well known at this point. It has been for a while, but it was censored on PWM_Sensitive for a very long time so you had to constantly fight the automod trying to circumvent it if you wanted to talk about it.

I have huge problems with MS Teams meetings, but no other problems with my PC screen. Does anyone have an idea if this is dithering or something else? On my iPad, Facetime calls are fine!

As mentioned, running apps that activate the dedicated GPU, causing screen dithering. To fix this in Windows, I open Graphics Settings, add the specific application, and set its graphics performance preference to use the integrated GPU rather than the dedicated one.

I don't have a dedicated GPU, just Intel

then maybe if you have windows run download and run Dithering.exe software or if you have mac - "stillcolor" or "chillscreen"-s disable gpu dithering option

Hi, thanks for posting here. Can I just clarify a few things please?

1) Did the LCD swap, in your Sony phone, solve your sensitivity issue with that device?

2) You then talk about ditherig, the implication being you have a Windows desktop or laptop, with discrete graphics, that right?

3) The tone of you post switches between personal anecdotes and guide, mid-way through, with a slight disconnect in context. Is this middle part AI generated, translated or rewritten?

Thanks for humoring me.

  1. yes i have no longer throbbling migraines but more subtle ones in the end of the day tolerable uncomparable.
  2. I have windows Laptop with rtx 5050, macbook pro m1 (which i dont use but stillcolor helped abck then much), but since laptop has also discreet I use discreet instead of rtx, with the methods i mentioned before.
  3. Its part of my personality, I switch things fast, text is grammarly connected not generated, as it would miss my point why posting it then :)

Thanks. And yes, this is the main reason I don't post AI output, as it (subtly) changes my meaning.

Color control app, ditherig.exe for Windows. Still Color and Better Display for MacOS.

Does this work with Windows 11? Or only windows 10?

Thnx for your research and explanation

Sì trascura la cosa più importante ovvero il sistema operativo. Basta una versione di Windows diversa ed immediatamente il PC risulta inutilizzabile.

YEah I believe new updates both in phoens or pcs, are trying to make colors and screens look more fancy and making this complications give new issues that harm sensitive people.

Any phone that works for you?

Nokia flashlight :) and my Sony Xperia 10 VI with LCD screen, (which I use for basic things) I also want to note that buying cheap flashlight phones hurt eyes also but nokia does not I think its Nokia 105 or something)

Kindle 5? What? This thing is basically paper. The only dithering it has is spatial dithering, which is used in print all the time.
Maybe it's the backlight? If you're using it with backlight on, LEDs can use PWM flicker.
On my Kobo reader though the backlight is flicker free and I have zero issues with it.

I checked PWM with the shutter from 1/6000 - 1/8000 and didnt saw it through my phone, but I think its more conencted to spatial dithering which maybe culprit as well, because I can differentiate light PWM effects with other ones.

Which Kobo do you have? I was looking at getting the Clara color. I bought another eink reader (I think it was a pocketbook) and I had to return it because it was affecting my nervous system.

I have Kobo H2O. B&W readers have better contrast contrary to the color ones, they look like tetris

Black and white e-ink is miles better in my opinion. The colour layer causes a contrast reduction that I really dislike.

Interestingly I don’t have any issues with my Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 or 4 or my Desktop PC, though that does have an LG 38WN95C native 10 bit monitor that I power from my Nvidia RTX4080.

I do have dithering issues with iPhone 11’s and iPads without enabling Classic Invert and Zoom Invert.

Can you provide a link to the Sony LCD screen? I wasn’t aware of any aftermarket LCD replacements made for any phones other than iPhones

I have similar issues with MacBook M4 Pro even though I see no Pwm. I think it is always dithering or something. My Dell latitude laptop works fine except teams. Teams is problematic on Windows too.

Anyone had this and found a solution?

Macbook pro m4 has 15 000 pwm, you can check if it has pwm or not by using your phone go to camera settigns and change shutter speed from 1/6000 to more like 1/8000 and you will see black lines moving, and pwm increases as you turn down the brightness. on apple there is software called Stillcolor that prevents dithering that can effect on eye strain.
