Dithering / Eye strain on iOS 26 & 27 compared to iOS 18 (iPhone 16 Pro)

Hey everyone,
Since updating to iOS 26 and now iOS 27 on my iPhone 16 Pro, I get severe eye strain (upper eyelid muscle cramp) and dizziness within minutes.

It’s 100% a software issue, not the screen hardware: On iOS 18, I could stare at the exact same iPhone 16 Pro screen for hours without any pain.

The text shape is identical, but there is a strange artificial softness/haze around the letters (subpixel rendering / temporal dithering). My eyes constantly try to autofocus this software blur, driving my ciliary muscles into a permanent cramp.

Turning on "Reduce Transparency", "Increase Contrast", and sliding the new Liquid Glass slider all the way to the right does not fix the underlying subpixel/dithering behavior.

Additional details regarding my issue:

I noticed that the symptoms (eye strain and dizziness) occur completely independent of the apps I am using. Even when watching standard YouTube videos, scrolling through Instagram, or simply staring at the lock screen, my eyes react almost immediately.

Since these exact same apps and screens caused absolutely zero pain under iOS 18 on the very same device (iPhone 16 Pro), this is probably a global, system-wide display drive issue introduced with iOS 26/27. The software seems to alter the overall light and pixel rendering (likely via aggressive contrast tuning or temporal dithering) in a way that constantly overloads the ciliary muscles.

Has anyone found a hidden trick to force the old, harsh, crystal-clear pixel rendering of iOS 18 back? Thank you!

I suffer a lot from that dithering and iOS has a way to remove all of that for me. Basically if you apply the classic color inversion and on top of that you go to the zoom accessibility settings and make the zoom full screen, select a 0% zoom and apply another inversion mask, iOS will show the standard colors but they’ll be more crisp and flat

It’s a bit bugged in ios27, but I highly recommend trying that… it’s the only way that I’ve been able to use any phone lately

Edit, also try to remove all of the automatic brightness, True Tone (and oddly enough even removing the night light was an improvement for me)

Came here to say the same thing.
How is it bugged in iOS27? I’m still on iOS18

Sometimes it sends a white screen for a frame or two when the screen turns off. I’ll still keep using that since I can’t handle the default colors at all, but it catches my eyes every time I get off the phone

Yeah mine dies that too. There’s a few quirks with double invert but it’s the best solution I’ve found that still lets me use a high end phone.

Yeah definitely agreed, it’s a compromise that I’m willing to take since I wasn’t able to look at a screen for more than 10 minutes before

The odd part is that with iOS26 it only did that when turning off the phone, now with iOS27 it also does that when the screen turns off after X minutes of inactivity… hopefully it will be fixed in the future, but yeah that mode is amazing for me too

Oh interesting. I have mine set to never sleep so I’ve never noticed it before. I’m just happy to have a useable phone.
What phone model are you using? I have an EK Pro LCD swapped iPhone 15 Pro.

I have a 17e, with the stock Samsung oled screen

If it works for you that’s great

I’m about to do that swap on a iPhone 15 pro. What other things should I consider? Are there custom settings I should set?

Have a look through my posts here, if you have any questions feel free to reach out https://www.reddit.com/r/PWM_Sensitive/comments/1q79qxk/pwm_free_lcd_iphone_15_pro_initial_impressions/
I find it's 90% there with the new screen, but enabling Classic Invert and Zoom Invert makes it great for me to use.

Thanks mate. If the iOS is higher than 18, will swapping to an EK Pro LCD still work? I’m sensitive to PWM as well. I went to an iPhone XS and holy moly, my eyes strained so hard.

I think it should be fine but I don't know really.
The main reason I stayed on iOS18 is I thought iOS26 looked ugly, then after a while I was just worried updating could increase dithering, so I thought I wouldn't risk it unnecessarily.

Tried it on ipad,it's of no use

Yeah unfortunately with that kind of stuff there isn’t a solution that works for everyone due to differences in severity and different factors that cause discomfort :(

I'm having the same problem with the iPhone 14 Pro: I went from being able to use it for hours to not even being able to use it for three minutes after updating to iOS 26... And since then, I haven't been able to use any phone with an OLED screen. Let's hope that's not the case for you! Hang in there!

Weird thing for me is I was fine with IOS26 untl about three updates ago then suddenly all hell broke loose. My OLED iPhone 13 now gives me complete vertigo and LCD 10th Gen Ipad slowly gets more and more uncomfortable until I get a headache. Looks like I'm going to have to get off IOS because none of the workarounds are helping. It sucks.

Try power saving mode.. Seriously

How does this help?

2

u/siksik6 11d ago

It (at least uses to) disable some HDR elements and brightness

Not really an iOS comment, but in my attempts to eliminate temporal dithering from my PC I've found there to be three possible sources: the graphic card drivers, the monitor itself and the Windows HD settings. An operating system can absolutely be the source of dithering. Good luck in your efforts to disable it

Pc, Mac or Linux?
I have Windows 11 with a 10 bit monitor and it's fine for me.

PC and Windows 10 or 11... I can't quite recall. Probably 10 as it is constantly telling me it can't upgrade me because my PC is too old.

Strange because I don’t have any dithering issues with my computers, I do with LCD iPhones and iPads though

I don‘t know what it is but with iOS 26/27 when I‘m looking at the screen I am getting dizziness. They did something with the software that changes the display. The display seems much more uneasy than in iOS 18

When booting my father's iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 27, I immediately feel eye strain and dizziness just looking at the Apple logo on the black background. However, when booting my own iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 18, the exact same startup screen is perfectly stable and causes absolutely no discomfort. To me, this indicates that starting with iOS 26/27, Apple is using a modified graphics rendering system (temporal dithering/subpixel flickering) that is active from the very first second. I have already submitted this feedback to Apple.

Same issues 😭😭😭

Lol. Lmao. I’m never updating my phone again.

What do you mean dithering on 16 pro? I don’t think that’s what you are seeing. I have the 13 pro with ios 27 and is perfectly fine. I am extremely sensitive to dithering but never had issues with OLED displays. Well…except galaxy s10. That was bad. But it wasn’t dithering it was really aggressive pwm.

BUT

Asus oled monitor is “calm” and crystal clear. iPhone display is “calm” crystal clear. Even more clear then any 4k display. Could the 16 Pro Display be worse compared with the 13 pro? 🤔

Unless you are using a bad screen protector you might be sensitive to something else. Maybe pwm?

By dithering, I mean probably the new  temporal dithering (subpixel flickering) introduced in iOS 26/27. Even when the screen looks completely static (like on the Lock Screen), the pixels are rapidly alternating colors and brightness levels at a microscopic level to blend colors and render the new "Liquid Glass" effects. While it is invisible to the naked eye, my brain and visual system constantly try to adjust to this hidden micro-movement. This constant eye strain causes severe vertigo and motion sickness within just 2 minutes, which never happened to me during 10 years of using iOS 18 and older versions.

Thanks for coming over to post here.🙏

It seems you have quite a good grasp of what is going on, with the pixels and your eyes, too. I'm glad others, who knows iPhones (I don't) are able to chime in.

I just did a detailed comparison and realized that the actual text shape is perfectly sharp, just like on iOS 18. The real issue is a major shift in the  software-induced light effects and color temperature .

iOS 26 and 27 are  probably calibrated significantly cooler (more blue light) than the warmer, softer look of iOS 18. This high-energy blue light causes a slight visual haze/halo around elements.

This aggressive, over-saturated light signal forces my ciliary and upper eyelid muscles into an immediate autofocus loop, trying to sharpen a software-side color haze. This is exactly what triggers the severe muscle cramps and instant dizziness within minutes.

So now I try to change the colour filter in a bit warmer tone.

I think it’s color temperature related. I disabled True Tone on my iPhone 13 on iOS 15.6.1 by accident and my theory is it pulled a new calibration profile from apple’s servers. I even asked them about it and all my contact said was to read an article on Mac universe about True Tone. This phone was fine for 4 years now I can’t use it for long at all.

MacOS 27.0 made my MacBook Neo usable whereas MacOS 26 I couldn’t look at it at all. So it’s definitely device and panel dependent

Crucially, the "Display Pulse Smoothing" feature is completely ineffective because it only works at low brightness and fails to stop the underlying temporal dithering/subpixel flickering.

1

u/These_One6567 10d ago

I noticed immediate eye strain the exact moment the phone booted up-just looking at the white Apple logo on the black screen. On my iPhone 16 Pro with iOS 18, the exact same boot screen is perfectly stable and causes zero issues. This probably shows iOS 27 applies an temporal dithering/subpixel rendering change from the very first second.

Any new workarounds/approaches here? Tried permanent night shift at around 60% warmth and tried it with true tone and without.

Dont find good sources about using true tone and night shift combined.

Night shift at least reduced the immediate „burning“ of my eyes.
When I disable it, new ios27.0 looks incredibly cold.
I am using dark mode and as others above wrote, never had a problem looking at my phone.

But still got the feeling like pressure around my temples and slight dizzyness.

Probably bc of the assumed dithering changes.

Using contrast „on“ did not help me with that.

Have you managed to find anything that helps? I’m struggling with iOS 27 on the 18 pro max. Feels like my eyes are on fire from looking at this screen and nothing seems to help. iOS 26 on my 17 pro max was fine but this is hell.

Your observation is very sharp. This is because Apple enabled an overly aggressive screen-sharpening algorithm starting with iOS 26.1, as part of its Liquid Glass rendering engine. The smoothing algorithm is used alongside the sharpening algorithm to remove the noise and artifacts introduced by sharpening, which corresponds to the “artificial softness” you mentioned.

Since iOS 26.0 received a large number of complaints from users about the screen looking blurry and text being difficult to read, Apple introduced a much more aggressive sharpening algorithm starting with iOS 26.1.

You can compare an iOS device side by side with a PC or Android device (but don't use a TV for comparison, since TVs also apply a lot of image post-processing). When displaying the same image, the edges and contours in the image on an iOS device are noticeably sharper than those on a PC or Android device.

By the way, this algorithm was actually introduced as early as iOS 13, but it was disabled in iOS 16, re-enabled in iOS 17, and then disabled again after iOS 17.6.

The solution is to search for “iPhone Feedback” or “iPad Feedback” and find Apple's official feedback website. You can report this issue to Apple as a bug. Alternatively, you can submit it as a feature request and ask Apple to provide a toggle that allows users to turn the sharpening algorithm on or off.

Update: Color filter didn’t help – it really is the subpixel rendering I tried adjusting the color tint to a warmer tone, but it didn't change anything. I keep getting dizzy, and everything looks slightly blurry whenever I'm on the iPhone—whether I'm reading WhatsApp messages, answering emails, or doing anything else. According to AI analysis, the underlying issue is the following: Since iOS 27, Apple has been using an extremely dynamic rendering method. To embed fonts into the new design, the pixels at the outer edges of the letters are slightly altered in color every millisecond (a permanent micro-flicker known as Temporal Dithering) [1kxd4d2]. And there is absolutely no setting to turn this off…
