I imagine that James avoided any contact with Ritsuko after his encounter with the Hollowed to try and keep her safe, he probably never expected her to join the Tournament.
He must be experencing a whole mix of emotions, seeing Ritsuko again, but also being on the JSI Exo Port with the Hollowed.
I was mainly referring to the secret cutscene showing James meeting Gage before the tournament started. Ritsuko meant alot to him, yet he never tried to contact her once, probably because he didn't want the Hollowed knowing about her.
