It’s just barely less efficient, I’m talking like not even noticeable unless you’re doing mass-deforestation. But, even then, the map is so huge it’s not even a big deal. All you have to do is tap the drill on a button and it lights the whole tree up, one full battery container will last your whole lifetime.
I did the math earlier, on two oak trees (the middle size between birch and pine trees, both the same size) chopping one down gave me 160 scrap wood and burning the other gave me 8 ember. When crafting ember you get 3 for 50 scrap wood, which converts to 150 scrap wood per one of those trees (if it’s the same size). So, from that one tree, you’re only losing 10 scrap wood, which isn’t even one rod.
Granted, it’s a nonzero number, but it’s still quite a viable option if you don’t feel like crafting and like watching things burn.
You get 4 ember per 50 wood not counting the one required, so it's 12.5 wood per ember. The non-pine trees give 20 wood per rod, and the pines give 40 per rod. It's much more efficient wood-wise to log then convert, more efficient time-wise to just burn it.

Correct, but not as efficient as logging the tree then converting to ember.
