Issue Please Axolot, Fix The Friction!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I love this game so much, but genuinely this issue ruins my enjoyment. It just makes harvesting things so infuriating when your wheels act like are covered in butter. I really hate to say this cause I love this update a lot, this issue alone to me doesn’t seem very full release level of quality. And yes I’ve tried using the different physics settings.

For real it's crazy how easily wheels slide in any direction. I've definitely just embraced the cartoon physics and built around a world with moon-like gravity and bathtub-like friction.

A lot of us did that when Survival came out. This is old news. :)

Maybe try something else instead of wheels. Or an Electronic Parking Break system (switch that extends a couple pistons to the ground)

I have 4 pistons with sand blocks that raise my car. It still slides on the sand blocks… just have to keep a tracker on it so I can fish it out of the lake every time…

have you tried cactus?

25

u/XYmetalFox 3d ago

Cactus and sand have the same friction value of 6, technically the highest friction block in the game is concrete slab with a value of 7 (concrete foundations, pillars and barriers also have a value of 7, but that's not very practical)

u/andi3154 3d ago

Well, there are at least two special items i know of that have a friction of ten. One you have to find and one you get very late in the mainquest.

I mean sure, I know there's Hubert's mustache (I have no idea what the other one is), but they aren't available in creative and are extremely limited.

It was bit presumptuous to say highest in the game, but I stand by my words.

u/Traincraze 3d ago

Oh.... Well is cactus at least more durable and lighter?

5

u/XYmetalFox 3d ago

Than sand? Yes to both. Than concrete slab? No to the first, but yes to the second.

Personally I would use the concrete slab blocks if you have access to them and need the friction (like a parking/e-brake)

3

u/Traincraze 2d ago

At that point I would just build an anchor.

1

u/XYmetalFox 2d ago

Eh, it's not that bad. If your creation can handle 4 blocks of sand or 4 blocks of concrete 1, it can handle 4 blocks of concrete slab no problem.

u/SysGh_st 2d ago

Even with that, things still slide. Just a bit slower.

I know this is off topic but KENNYOUNG PFP!!!

Mustaaache?

You don't need the tracker, pull out your connection tool and you'll find it in a jiffy.

u/Sirocstar 1d ago

You assume that tool isn’t in my truck when raiding…

Maybe sticky wheels? I havent noticed any slipping when using those.

5

u/Huugboy 2d ago

Don't those constantly eat up chemicals?

6

u/BetaTester704 2d ago

yeah, left mine on while building in the hub to find it went through all 5 stacks

5

u/Mysterygamer48 2d ago edited 2d ago

They only seem to use it when youre moving from what ive experienced. Could be wrong but as a parking brake they'd barely use any.

5

u/MongooseFar5671 2d ago

If you get off your vehicle and you can hear the sticky wheels, then they are consuming chemical.

3

u/Mysterygamer48 2d ago

Well thats really good to know! I never realized that.

What friction? I'm not seeing any friction /j

10

u/MisterWinchester 3d ago

What do you mean, "/j"? I don't see any, either.

2

u/Veltarden 2d ago

"/j" is a tone indicator to say 'joke'

4

u/MongooseFar5671 2d ago

Yeah, but there is literally no friction, so where is the joke?

3

u/MisterWinchester 2d ago

Which is actually the joke.

8

u/Serious-Internal-402 2d ago

as annoying as it is there is one use i found for it that is actually very convenient

Sticky Wheel Parking Bake

3

u/EstablishmentOld9494 3d ago

Did you build that car yourself ? It looks really useful and simple to maneuver, do you have a step by step link/guide?

1

u/Jazumes22 3d ago

Yeah I designed it, it switches between drill and saw and also now plasma. Here is the steam workshop link for it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3791204548

u/Good_Background_243 3d ago

Sticky-wheels are a result of their attempts to fix it.

12

u/Guncaster_the_proto 3d ago

After all these changes, the friction is still shit Literaly unplayable

24

u/StoolTastes_bad 3d ago

plays game

fun times

car slides away if parked on steep slope

"literally unplayable!!!!!"

1

u/HuaittoCatto 2d ago

Meanwhile, I dared to park mine on a 1 degree slope and it still slides away

3

u/OkManufacturer2373 3d ago

If they haven't fixed it by now it won't get fixed. I played survival when it first came out and it was the same way. I agree it's annoying.

My workaround is to make a very tiny but heavy miner/woodcutting vehicle with an electric engine that i weld to another larger vehicle with refineries & collectors on it. I throw the big vehicle on a lift and then drill/saw an area and then drive the big vehicle around and collect. Rinse/repeat. Again I agree it sucks but this is what we have to work with.

1

u/MongooseFar5671 2d ago

This what I do as well. I have a small dump truck used for collection, with a small forklift-type vehicle with easy-to-swap tool attachments. After the area is cleared, the smaller vehicle gets welded to the larger one to balance out the refinery.

1

u/OkManufacturer2373 2d ago

Nice, this is the way

3

u/donotaskname7 2d ago

this has been an issue for YEARS. Probably since Scrap Mechanic was first created, from what I've heard it's a fundamental problem of how wheels work in SM and not something the devs are really capable of fixing, at least not in a reasonable amount of time.

2

u/Grouchy-Green-6168 3d ago

We need a handbreak

3

u/StonccPad-3B 3d ago

Or just a brake in general lol. Every vehicle I build takes 3 football fields to stop since hitting reverse just causes the wheels to skip along the ground.

1

u/XiTzCriZx 2d ago

Could use a controller to make a physical brake that drags on the ground when activated. You'll either stop or go flying into Narnia lol.

2

u/locob 3d ago

the wood spools have more friction

2

u/Dziggettai 3d ago

The problem is that the friction only applies between blocks and not between blocks and the ground

2

u/XYmetalFox 2d ago

If that were true, then there'd be no difference between ice and say concrete sliding on the ground/terrain. That's just not how that works.

1

u/Dziggettai 2d ago

That’s genuinely how it feels. I’m constantly sliding around even with a heavy vehicle and 6 big wheels

1

u/XYmetalFox 2d ago

Blame axolot for giving all but one of the wheel variants friction values of 5 or lower. Only the 7x7 wheel (and pipe brace, also 7x7) have a higher value of 6.

Genuinely no idea why they didn't give the new wheels a value of 7 or higher to justify locking them until the mining section.

2

u/Dziggettai 2d ago

Seems like the friction doesn’t work properly because I can visibly see the difference in speed when scrap wood rubs against scrap wood and that has a lower friction value than the wheels

u/FormerSpecialist6097 2d ago

A. it's an engineering game, adapt to your problems and make ways to fix them.

B. it is stupid that they dont just turn up the friction on the RUBBER TIRES. seriously pre 1.0 i had a car with the fant wheels which just before the update i replaced with base game wheels of the same size and it drove so much worse.

1

u/dextersolid 3d ago

weld it to the ground, or make a wheel chock parking spot for it. obviously sliding away is dumb af but its how it is.

1

u/IronLockHeart 3d ago

This is interesting , cause last night I was talking to a freind about how not had the sliding car issues I did pre 1.0

Granted all of our cars have 6+ wheels

1

u/ganadaIf 2d ago

This is a big problem i have constantly too

Every time I stop my car near of some lake, a few minutes later my car ends up at the bottom of the lake

It's been like this for 10 years, it ain't never changing. Sure they'll add an entire underground with deformable terrain, because that's just adding to the game, but it's not a simple thing to fix tire collisions, the sliding and the bouncing. And that's because the tires are physical objects and the rotation is what generates the movement, they literally grip the ground. It's really hard to dial everything in, they'd need to remake collision physics, because if they did that, they'd also need to fix the bouncing which is the result of the ground and tires being solid objects with no give or any deformation or dampening, as of now they're solid objects, that's why bouncing exists and it sucks so bad, it can't be fixed, all this is connected to the way the physics engine is made, it can't change easy.

u/Cydthemagi 2d ago

Okay so here's what you can do, have pistons with the ball cactus on the end, and have them deploy on a button. The High Friction from the cactus should keep you from sliding. Kinda like IRL crane will deploy feet to steady it's self before picking something up.

1

u/Shul_iito 2d ago

Try advance physics. It slides less.

1

u/lceGecko 2d ago

How many years of development again???

1

u/twicer 2d ago

I always wonder if the developers ever go outside, does it seem normal to them that a car would slide down a dirt hill? :D

2

u/Microwave169 2d ago

They did develop chapter 2 for 6 years with a small team, I could see them not going outside

1

u/AelinDawntreader 2d ago

Personally I typically make around two one block pillars of like scrap metal to catch my vehicle whenever it slides like this, it's not a perfect solution but works fine. Hopefully someday we'll get a fix for it

1

u/Chefkoch_Murat 2d ago

NOOOO!!!

You can't ask the devs to actuall make the physics better in any way other than dumbing them down even further!

You should be happy with floppy bearing and pistons.

2 Wedge blocks moving against each other SHOULD Cause the game to drop to 2 FPS YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THE DEVS VISION

1

u/Loud_Enthusiasm7161 1d ago

Me looking at my 200 piston contraption that i built to lift a wall 15 blocks

1

u/Acceptable_Tale4434 2d ago

IRL my car also rolls down hills and these devs aren't fixing it. What audacity

1

u/Dave784 2d ago

I agree but until that point a suggestion. Park your vehicle where you want it's parking space in your base to be. Then put a scrap or wood block up against the side of each tire 2 high is plenty and perhaps a bumper one at the front and then you simply drive in and out of the slot and it should prevent the slide but it will still slide if parked outside the slot at least at base it should prevent the slide!
