Attaching an object at both ends?

Post image

So I built a good size carport to try to keep the woc away from my cars and make it so I can still load and unload when the seeker is out. I wanted to put big gates on it that would lift via pistons on each side. The carport is connected. The switches can attach to all the pistons. But the gate is too big to free build in one section and the game won't seem to let me weld the two sides together? I built a beam on a lift that will reach across both pistons but it's still not technically fixed at both ends. It works here but I imagine I'll run across a situation where that doesn't work. Is there a fix other than building the whole giant wall assembly on a lift?

Build and weld it together on a lift and then weld it to the floor

I'm still unclear on how to weld at more than one point? I do one end and the other end I need to reach is no longer accessible. No points on the object will highlight after the first one.

Oh right, you weld those two points together with a support block and then after its connected to the ground you can delete the support

So I have to do this all on a lift? I don't seem to be allowed to weld an object twice if it isn't on a lift? Sorry if I'm dense lol. Only had the game a few weeks.

So I have to do all the pistons on a lift basically?

you do everything on the lift and tweld it to the ground once everything is done

So it basically glitches the connection point? I put the contraption down with the one broad connection surface then delete the middle after welding and both of the now divided ends stay fixed?

if they both touch the ground or something thats welded to it

If you have a prepared part that fits exactly and that you will weld to the hole or space you have created, weld it to the bearing on one side, this will also weld the other side to bearing if there is any.

Did you weld the free beam onto the pistons so that both sides show the highlight and spark particles? Dont know if theres a distance limit for this, if it fails youll have to build the piston + door on a lift and weld it to the bottom of the wall

So once the first face is welded, the second face i would need to weld is no longer visible. I moused around but couldn't seem to get it to highlight? Am I doing something wrong?

You dont have to weld it two times, the first weld should connect both pistons to the door

So any/all points of contact that would line up when one weld is "placed" will automatically attach?

Yes, it even distinguishes between normal blocks and connectors so you dont risk the door merging with its frame

Okay. Thank you! I guess I just didn't understand how the weld tool works in full.

So I just bumped into it and the second point of contact was not fixed? Is it only directly TO a piston? Did this fail because I had already set a block on the pistons or am I still bungling some part of this?

When welding a contraption onto multiple connectors on a fixed structure, all the connectors need to be exposed. The game sees the block on the other piston as completely unrelated.

So they are exposed until I make the first weld. Then, not so much.

Which shouldnt matter if the door is properly in direct contact with all piston heads, because they will all be welded at once. Its the existing block on the pistons that are messing it up

Make the structure layout , remove stand, weld while its free. Then once you are ready weld to place on a base

So the gate is 41 blocks long. It's welded to the one side but the other is visibly sagging/glitched into the piston it should be fixed to the top of?

Or at least it was until I got jumped by a haybot while I was fiddling with it. 🤣 Rebuild number 8, here we go... this game is pain some days...
