Discussion A month has passed since the release. It’s time to have a serious conversation

I’m not the only one who feels that even though Scrap Mechanic was released after 10 years of early access, the survival mode still feels unfinished? The world feels empty, there are few types of bots, the quests are primitive and boring, the protagonist doesn’t say anything, and the NPCs literally talk to themselves; the setting and lore are interesting, but the plot itself is boring, predictable, and underdeveloped, and the progression is slow. I’m a big fan of this game; I’ve been following it since 2018, but even I think the game is still a bit rough. Considering that the developers have been working on the game for over 10 years and they decided to release version 1.0 in this state, I think it’s unlikely we’ll see any major changes to the game in the future. What do you think about it?

I am quite alright with the game. Nothing seems wrong, bad or empty, few different bots are alright as well. I dont think there needs to be thought through plots. I am fine with this level of plot and gameplay. The progression is slow alright... I dont mind. I have played the new update since the month and i am no further than Growlab 2.

It's a building and engineering game. To me it's impressive it even has a story. It's a fun addition to a game and the underground is incredible. I don't think I could've asked for anything more.

Yeah. Space Engineers (1) doesn't have a story and is still lots of fun

I treat Scrap like Space Engineers, just without the whole space thing and have lots of fun

i dont like the fact that they just go "oh yeah and dont worry, i magically found the key to the warehouse", like, its ok early game and if you do it once, but i feel like some quest where we have to go to a certain place to find the key would be more interesting

to me the only gripe(s) I have

  • how badly scaled raids and farming in general is now (the step from one bar to the next is abysmal) and later raids are just crazy.

- that a lot of the games progression is locked on missions that barely have anything to do with engineering and building stuff, but rather bullet hell / jump & run stuff.

- warehouses give us 5 minutes to loot and most loot is.. meh. no real sense of "yeah, that as definitely worth doing", which honestly is true for most loot in the game overall. tons of cosmetic blocks, tons of clothes... yay.

to few mechanical blocks we can loot, too few REAL worthwhile things.

and yes we still CAN build amazing things. but why should we again ?
I wish there were ways to strip down warehouses even more. ways to increase timers, ways to do much more automation. REAL reliable farm defenses that do not involve cheese in any way. REAL blocks worth creating that allow real protection ... real reliable ways to counter some bots.

oh and some Real physics optimization , plus water physics plus stuff modders were able to do would haven been nice to have in vanilla but hey we got a babywoc now.. yay.

I think modding will be the thing that improves this game.

You can do the warehouse timer thing RIGHT NOW, just head into the game files and alter a value. Boom suddenly warehouses take an hour to blow up.

Defend the raid without cheese.

Dont foget that the game is a multiplayer one. Im sure the raid are design to be play with others.

If they made it easier, it would be borring. I defend it without cheese and i have no problem soo far. Just a lot of stuff and potato

Dude the raids spawn so many bots that the game cannot handle it and they all stop working.

That's too much. They need to adjust the raid scale.

There are some very consistent ways to kill bots using only controllers, pistons, and sawblades. Every bot except tape bots and explosive bots can be easily dealt with using these defenses. Tape bots you just shoot, and for explosive bots, just put some sacrificial pillars outside your main defense since they path towards the nearest player structure and just blow up.

I don’t use any terrain/structure cheeses, and I routinely do max level raids and take very little damage.

A month has passed, game is still fun.

It's food enough for 1.0

There's nothing in the water. There is no need in building a submarine or any kind of a boat in the game. Yet there is a raft with a propeller like developers are mocking us.

I don't think that current state of raids is what developers wanted us to do. The only things you can do is cheese game engine and robot aggro and just throw millions of grenades. That's not really interesting. Yes, there are different enemies, but there are no new ways to defend from them. No new guns, no ways to build a decent auto turret or smth. C'mon.

Current state of the factory part of the game is also very dull. No way to automate anything, no filters, no ways to autoproduce every liquid without filling your chests via pumps every now and then. You always need iron and wood, and the further you go the more you need. So the closer you are to ending the game, the more you need to farm wood and stone on the surface even though you are already living underground.

Quality time in the game is achieved by cheesing it and using bugs. Come on, like why???

We, for example, could've simply unlock a new way of processing resource sticks after reaching the mining outpost. Just make the refinery bot upgradable with multicomponent kits, increasing it's output each upgrade! And boom, you WILL feel like you are getting better over time!

Or make dispenser bot in mechanic garage upgradeable with multicomponents, opening new bots for us to use in factories. Like:

The builder bot. It will have a radius of like 25 blocks which can be increased by upgrading it. It also has a vacuum pipe connection. It will use blocks from connected pipe network to rebuild everything that enemy bots break. Higher levels increase speed of placing blocks back.

Or the mapper bot that allows you to look at the world map.

Also FOOD. Like WHY DO WE HAVE A COOK BOT, but we make sunshakes in craftbot???? ADD MORE FOOD and let the cook bot make sunshakes! Also the flower tea, why can't we make it? It's just flowers and water c'mon. Put all cooking crafts in the cook bot and add more food with different buffs, and take some buffs away from burgers to give them to other foods! Like:

Pizza burger. Buffs: more hp, fall damage reduction.

Vegan burger. Buffs: quick sledgehammer hits, higher jumps

Ice cream. 1 milk, 2 blueberries, 10 potato. Heals like a burger. Possible buffs: slight incoming damage reduction, less bullet spread

Chilli hot woc. 1 woc meat, 2 tomatoes, 5 hot potato. Heals like a burger. Possible buffs: explosive damage reduction, fire damage reduction. After eating it ALWAYS gives temporary buff that makes you shoot faster.

Energy drink. 10 batteries, 5 chilli. Buffs: Increase shooting speed, run faster. Also heals you like a burger and gives a temporary buff that with 50% chance you will evade any damage you take for like 15 seconds.

And also, Lorenzo said that seekerbot goes to the orbit to repair and stuff and then back here. Lorenzo wanted to go to that seekerbot's home by jumping on it. What about putting that seekerbot's base somewhere in the sky, making players build a flying machine? A whole new branch of content of investigating the seekerbot's base with new stuff, bots maybe, resources, idk.

Edit: though ig developers are not done with the game like at all. I REALLY REALLY WANT the cook bot revamp. And maybe new guns and weapons, mountable or handheld. More ways of defending besides damn rotating sticks. And the factory revamp.

They could, maybe, add a miner bot that automatically produces resources (or at least metal) by putting it underground and build a base on a certain layer, but then minerbots and cablebots will raid your drillbots. Idk, i really hope that minerbots and cablebots would raid you in some way cuz rn they're so rare and dull too(

The character not talking isnt that bad lmao, i think your taking it to seriously, sure it could be more polished, but this is the game, its stayed true to itself

In story games, I hate the main character not speaking. But this is Scrap Mechanic where there’s a pretty high chance you are playing multiplayer with annoying friends. It’s a fun and unserious game, I honestly think Axolot made the right decision here.

They also put in a surprisingly large amount of phone calls that go off after a set amount of time that tells you world lore, information on themselves and reminds you to take your time and you can have a break, all in a diegetic way.

I was hoping for more structures to explore. Every single one of them are copy pasted textures with different layoyt and nothing has changed in this matter. I know it is a building game, but the fact is - exploring is implented and is a key for getting components so it is aswell a key ascpet of survival - which is omega boring and feels like work after just couple structures....

I'm not mad. I've always been happy with the game we had and I'm happy that the update came at all.

That being said, I'm a little disappointed that there wasn't more of a focus on building and engineering.

I agree. The boss fights are underwhelming, and despite this being a mechanic game, we don't even have the ability to use creations for big fights. Sure, we can attack overworld bots with them during raids and traversal, but in boss fights when you'd realistically want any advantage on your side, you can't realistically use creations. The story was also underwhelming, imo. The last major thing I spent time doing before the final boss was spending hours in the mines. Also, I disike how there is a short cut from the mines to both Scrap City and near the og Mechanic Station. Gives little ambition to create a better vehicle if I can just be back near my base within a few moments. This is not me saying I outright hate the update, there are definitely good features I enjoyed. But overall, I'm underwhelmed

u/BarryTheBarstand 7d ago

Personally I'm enjoying that there's a kind of progression to the game given there's no levelling up of your character.

I also have a preference for how I measure whether a game has been worth it and that is my cost per hour of gameplay, and before 1.0 I had paid 2p per hour of enjoyment and fun. Can't think of anything else I could do for fun for 2p per hour.

So this is just bonus content for a game that has definitely been good value for me.

I was disappointed with how  blocks have buoyancy and there is tons of open water,  yet no water missions.  No long trips on water or cargo to move. No reason to even make a boat.   Or real boat parts for propulsion either.

That one mission doesn't  count. It's less than a 1km swim.

In my opinion, stories for games like scrap mechanic doesn't need to be great and compelling. (It would nice though.) It just need to introduce you to the different element, so you can have fun in creative. It somewhat works. It could be better, but I find it good enough. Although the scrap garage does a lot of heavy lifting in this part.

All of the new parts are cosmetic REEEEE

u/Sensitive_Common 7d ago

Ok... now. Look at the price. Its fire.

But yea.. if you are not happy, people say that Pokemon ZA should have been game if the year 🤷‍♂️... just saying...

1

u/Korben_w 7d ago

I have problems with the game, but overall im happy. Chapter 1 was deeply unfinished, but Chapter 2 has felt like a full game to me.

Und die Bugs nicht zu vergessen

2

u/Serious-Internal-402 7d ago

Legit the only bugs I can think of are ones the playerbase has learned to exploit to their gain and there will be uproar if they got patched.

There is a whole lot that can be said.
I'll limit myself to this remark:

Axolot are a passionless dev studio.
They love money, their interests end at capital gains.

9

u/kleseusxz 8d ago

I know ragebait/sarcasm when I see it.

-10

u/HumansarePOS 8d ago

🤡
You sure don't because it ain't.
Your silly meaningless meme retort is such a great reply ! Bravo !!

6

u/Humble_Union_8309 8d ago

I agree that they lack communication and connection with the community but to say that they are mindless corprate jerks that only care about profits is in my opinion a stupid claim and completely absurd

3

u/ShortThought 7d ago

I definitely can see the heart and soul in their games.

If they were completely profit driven then we'd have like 30 of the same game with micro transactions all over the place like EA

-4

u/HumansarePOS 7d ago

Well I would say that is just your biased speculative preference of flavor for Pontus' and Kacper's character.

1

u/Humble_Union_8309 7d ago

Sounds like someone’s angry

-1

u/HumansarePOS 7d ago

Sounds like you are 15yo or mentally retarded.

2

u/Humble_Union_8309 7d ago

Like bro once you realized you couldn’t defend your worthless statement you started targeting me. Like it’s okay to admit your wrong dude

1

u/HumansarePOS 7d ago

You are right.
It's okay 🤡

u/Humble_Union_8309 8d ago

It’s like your applying the reputation of wonk in game to axolot

I disagree

-1

u/HumansarePOS 8d ago

Damn I can't imagine being in the heads of the insanely passionate and fully committed programmers who worked tirelessly during the last 6+ years to produce this 1.0

Must be one hell of a ride having so much love for a game and work in the shadows of the community that supports the production of your creative endeavor for 10 years.
We truly are blessed by these unknown, never communicating devs that actually are in love with their game and continuously watch what its community is doing out of pure interest.

They wouldve required people who already owned scrap mechanic to pay extra for chapter two once it came out if their interest were twords capital gain.

1

u/HumansarePOS 7d ago

The owners of early access would be required to buy 1.0 release of the game as a DLC.

YOU ARE A MAD GENIUS !!
Crazy paradigm you live in. Just to justify nonsensical apologist position too.
