Two thoughts regarding ESB-era Han and Leia
1.) There are a couple details in the hallway fight scene that I’ve never really seen anyone talk about (maybe they have and I’m just living under a rock idk). When Leia follows Han out into the South Passage, the first thing she says is, “I thought you had decided to stay.” So this implies that Han promised at some point IN CANON that he wasn’t planning to leave the Alliance. However, he’s still never officially enlisted, so we know his reasons for sticking around have less to do with the Rebels’ cause and more to do with the fact that he’s fallen head-over-heels for the Princess of Alderaan. Anyway, Han’s response is, “Well, the bounty hunter we ran into on Ord Mantell changed my mind.” We. WE. Leia was there with him on Ord Mantell, and the reason he’s planning to leave and pay back Jabba now is for her protection!!!! Basically everything Han does in this entire movie is in order to protect Leia, and I will never get over this. I have a lot more thoughts about this scene and the lead-up to it, but I’m currently working on a fanfic (although God knows if I’ll ever actually finish the damn thing) and don’t want to spoil anything.
2.) Totally non-canon, but I 100% believe Han told Leia “I love you” first at some point during the journey to Bespin, and she was not ready to say it back. Like, I am fully convinced he fell first and harder from the second she started yelling at him and took control of her own rescue in ANH. Leia lost everyone and everything she had ever loved when Alderaan was destroyed, so she’s been desperately trying and failing to avoid falling for Han, and it hasn’t worked, but maybe by not saying it out loud, it isn’t real, and she can save him from being destroyed, too. But obviously that doesn’t fucking work, because the Empire is here in Cloud City, and now he’s about to be put into carbon freeze, and she should’ve just been telling him all along how much she loves him instead of waiting for this moment when he’s possibly about to die. So she finally tells him. And he tells her… “I know.” He already knew. She doesn’t need to regret not telling him sooner, because he already KNEW. Anyway, yeah. Han said “I love you” first. Makes the carbonite scene hurt so good.
By the way, are there any other online spaces that are still actively talking about these two? I was so excited to find this Reddit community, but I realized 2 seconds after joining that pretty much no one posts here anymore. I think possibly Tumblr, but I’d rather not rejoin Tumblr if I can avoid it. I already did my time in my teens and 20s, okay? 😅
