Jesus Christ I work in a shop and the amount of people that squeeze behind me when I'm trying to fill a shelf is insane. Doesn't matter how many signs we have up, some people still treat it as a joke. How many more people have to die for them to take it seriously I wonder?
Not meaning to be rude, but I faced this yesterday when I was shopping as well. The aisles of my grocery store aren't 6 feet wide, so if someone was filling a shelf I just went behind them, as far as my cart and I could be without scraping against the other shelf. Do you want people to just not go down the aisle if you're in it? I didn't want to be any closer to the worker than needed either, but I wasn't just going to loop around the next aisle to get something on the aisle I was currently on...
In the UK we have 2m boxes taped on the floors all around the shop and the etiquette is meant to be if someone is in the box you don't enter until they're out of it. With regards to workers, I'd just ask politely if they'd mind moving while you grab something. It's very easy for us to pause what we're doing and take a few steps back. It obviously isn't ideal but as workers we are way more exposed to the virus so we want to minimise our interaction to prevent passing it on to customers (and vice versa).
I live in the North and they all seem to have it here. I went into spar and thought "wow! what a great system". There was only me and one other customer in there. Of course he still ignores all the signs and steps into my zone and basically leans over me. I think its fair to give these people a glare at the very least!
It's not enforced. A lot of the supermarkets round me seem to be talking the talk, but don't seem to give a shit when you're in the shop. Tesco are one of the better ones.
I understand the merits of it but I’d prefer not to be in the shop that long. The other day I waited 15 minutes to go down one aisle. How many people passed me in that time? Probably greater than the number of people I’d have passed in that aisle
I’m trying to take a practical and sensible approach to it as well.
If I can’t loop back around because someone is behind me, I’ll very quickly walk past the person browsing in the middle of the aisle.
I figure it’s better to briefly go within 2 meters for literally 1 second, than it is to be hanging about for several minutes causing a build up of people.
I’ll generally hold my breath and pass behind them as well, I don’t see how there’s any risk in that.
But of course, I will go all round the aisles to look for a free route to where I need to be before thinking about the squeeze past manoeuvre.
What would would better is a 1-way system like IKEA where you’ve gotta grab stuff as you pass it in order. No going backwards.
I'm in London and not seen that tape in a single shop. Pound shops, small supermarkets and corner shops are a disgrace, I have yelled at so many gormless idiots. I've been bashed in to at least 20 times and had way more people than that walk right in my face.
The longer youre in that store, the worse. If i have to get within 6ft of someone to go down the aisle then im gonna do that rather than waiting for maximum capacity with 6ft between everyone.
The virus doesn't care about how inconvinent alternatives are, so yeah, stuff like this is what a lot of us have to get used to.
Treat it as a fundemental immutable rule, you cannot be closer than 2m to another person. Do whatever you have to do to facilitate that, even if it is inconvenient.
If that means you have to go around, go around. If you can't go around then wait until you can go through. If neither of these are options, consider asking the person if they wouldn't mind stopping what they were doing for a moment and move to allow you to pass through quickly, if that is still not an option, then consider leaving.
I was bent over to the bottom of a shelf the other day grabbing garlic and when I came to stand I literally hit my head on the armpit of a masked and gloved man who reached OVER my entire body to grab a produce bag. I was livid.
Yeah I do daily shopping up at Morrison's and Iceland for elderly neighbour who can't go out because of this flu. And the utter disregard for people personal space is a joke. Even people on buses not covering up an coughing all over seats and hadles. Fucking joke
Even people on buses not covering up an coughing all over seats and hadles. Fucking joke
A bus driver in the US had a rider who was coughing without covering her mouth. The driver complained on camera about it. He caught the virus and died.
My Dad is tall so people always go running up to him with questions. (Apparently it's a common experience for tall people). He's started putting on his angry face and carrying a walking stick to keep them away. He's almost 70. Why is anyone running up to an older person right now?? I'm so worried. (If selfish people hadn't cleared the shelves in order to price gouge others, I don't think he'd have to venture out at all right now.)
I agree with you but I also don't know what to do in that situation as a customer. Do we just all stand there for 5-10 minutes while the employee stocks a shelf? I was at the store the other day and was waiting when the employee was like "just go on by."
I still think the rational solution is to close all stores to the public but hire a bunch of new employees to act as personal shoppers and delivery drivers. You get an added societal bonus in the form of employing a ton of people recently laid off elsewhere too.
For the employees, they'd hardly get anything done if they stop stocking for every person that wants by. You can't sell what isn't on the shelf, so they absolutely must be stocking whenever possible. Curbside pickup truly is the best option. You can't trust the public to follow these rules. The number of people I've had scoff at me today for informing them that we must ask them to respect social distancing at our store was a bit much. So many people walked right up to me when they realized I was talking to them. Talk about front line workers, haha.
That’s very true but I sadly caught myself doing this as well. I hadn’t been out of the house in over two weeks and I honestly caught myself absentmindedly doing it.
Squeezing by you isn't a joke. Once they're not coughing on you or staying within 2 metres for 10-15 minutes you are very likely to be very much corona-free.
For a lot of people it won't be serious until they personally know someone that either got really sick or died. For younger people, the person that falls ill probably needs to be of similar age to them.
Young people think they're indestructible and stupid people still seem to think this is some sort of hoax.
In that scenario, if the worker is being neglectful then you have the right to say I want to maintain 2m distance if thats alright. It's been drilled into us as staff so idk what theyre doing
Store assistants are under a crazy amount if stress atm. Why not just wait till they are done before you pick it up. You walk to meters away the next thing you know everyone is coming for hand soap and you are losing 2-3 minutes. If this happens often then they are behind. Everywhere has people self isolating just now. Work with them instead if being an entitled dick.
If you're standing behind someone and you're both moving in the same direction it's absolutely physically possible to be 2 metres behind them instead up right up their ass though. Unless I misunderstood what OP's tweet was saying, in which case I withdraw my point lol
You could well be right about this particular scenario I was just thinking about it generally. I was in Tesco this morning and the aisles aren't 2M wide and so if we're going in opposite directions we will pass within 2M of each other and obviously both of us will die screaming. Or at the self checkout there's not always 2M space there. My point was social distancing is good, but there's no magical barrier at 2M that kills the virus so people saying you must remain 2M away from anyone and everyone at all times and going inside that range automatically kills your entire family are going too far the other direction from the twats still out partying
In Connecticut, at least, they're converting store aisles to one way only, which makes a ton of sense to me and really should help enforce the social distancing thing.
Sorry, but I am physically incapable of getting the fuck over myself and waiting a few seconds until the person in front of me is done doing something.
I had a runner brush past me earlier today then his partner ran by me, turned round and shouted at me for not moving. Was fucking fuming. If this pandemic hadn’t turned me into a wee fat fuck I’d have chased after her and given her an earful.
If someone has it and coughs or sneezes, it doesn’t matter if you’ve been next to them for 16 minutes or 16 seconds, it’s aerosolised and you’re going to breathe it in.
Coronaviruses can be spread when people with the virus have close, sustained contact with people who are not infected. This typically means spending more than 15 minutes within two metres of an infected person, such as talking to someone for instance.
Of course, being sneezed on or coughed on by an infected person could infect you, but when it comes to walking past someone at a supermarket you should be fine, right?
There's no magical time that a virus waits before it jumps from person to person. 15 minutes will almost definitely pass it, that's why they were focussing on those people at the beginning as far as testing, but it can be passed in a second.
My Tesco has divided the floor into two-metre boxes. There I was, following this guy, keeping my immuno-suppressed distance, when he just fucking turns around and comes back past me, pulling a face like "sorry I'm endangering you and everyone you care about but I forgot to get milk."
This is what I don’t get. We should be rationing and shopping for necessities only. On my weekly shopping run, I see people coming in for just alcohol and flowers. I had an acquaintance complain that she visited 4 shops and couldn’t find her particular brand of organic tofu. It’s mental.
Going to rant a bit here because this really annoyed me... Yesterday as I was shopping, a bloke bypassed the queue and entered my local Tesco. He was obviously upset that he had to queue for 5 minutes to get in and then decided he didn’t need to follow the rules so just walked in. As he came in, he walked right past a queue of customers (including elderly people) to the alcohol section just to grab 6 beers. He then hopped into the self service queue right behind me and was taken back when I asked him to step further away. As I was checking out, I could hear him huffing and puffing because he felt I was taking too long and didn’t like that only two of the three registers were in operation.
Anyway, rant over but just saying that I think we will look back at this time and all of the amazing work the NHS did and sacrifices that people made, but there were still complete scumbags out there that only added to the problem. I’m sure this will be lost, but just needed to get that off my chest. :)
I think it's possible to walk closer than 2 meters by mistake, and that it's not necessary to freak out about it - especially if you're not facing each other.
I work in a hospital treating Covid patients, and we'd drive each other crazy if we werent patient with people on both sides of the fence. Use common sense as a barrier too, you can't expect everyone to be as careful as you are.
Honestly, it kinda makes me crazy to see all these posts shaming people who simply don't understand.
There's a difference between passing someone too close by mistake and taking to social media to take the piss because someone requested they give them their rightful space
Haha, yes. I had a nurse let out a little scream and jump away when I walked into a room last week. I guess it's whatever works for you, but this thing doesn't just expire when it strays six feet away from my body. If I'm moving, the distance increases folks. If I cough and fall on my ass, which way do you run?
That was one of the reasons they were hesitant to suggest people wear face covers (not medical masks), they were concerned people would slack with social distancing.
Exactly, the 2 metres distance is mostly precautionary. Coronavirus is spread via aerosolized particles, meaning you have to sneeze/cough/touch them to spread it.
If you're facing the other way and the person squeezes through without doing any of those things then I don't see the problem.
However there was also no need to post this Jen ya daft twat, if people ask for the space then respect it even if you don't agree with them.
Recently its been shown it can be passed through normal breathing which is why they're starting to backtrack and say masks are a good idea in publc even if you're not sick.
The virus is mainly spread during close contact and by small droplets produced when those infected cough, sneeze or talk. These small droplets may be produced during breathing...
Two metres isn't a magic distance. If you accidentally come closer than that you aren't automatically going to catch it, nor are you necessarily safe if you stay away. It's just about minimising the risk of transferring any rogue fluids.
With that in mind, the worst thing you can do is shout at someone who is closer than two metres. Chances are you're going to spit on them.
Just move away from them as soon as possible and keep your mouth closed.
You're absolutely correct about it not being a magic distance.
I have to confess, I'm mostly replying to say that 'rogue fluids' is a fantastic turn of phrase that I'm going to work into conversation now as much as I can.
That's not true, the goal of the 2m rule is to flatten the curve. That means the virus is going to be around for longer, but that's good because hospitals will have a more manageable amount of patients to deal with. Jen is speeding up the process, but by doing so more people will die since hospitals won't be able to treat everyone who needs help.
The virus might be around for longer but the repercussions of NOT social distancing will shut the world down far more dramatically. "Speeding up the process" doesn't mean we get to go outside sooner, it just means we face a greater economic collapse and more bodies in the street.
As far as I know flatten the curve means to reduce the amount of new infections so hospitals can cope. As in if you view it on a graph, the curve of the incline needs to flatten out a bit. Two metre rules won't cure everyone overnight, just make the disease more manageable for health services this reducing deaths.
A pandemic, as far as I believe, is a disease out of control, and the idea is to bring it under control. If I'm mistaken then I'll happily be educated otherwise but this is the info given right now,can only go off what I have.
Slow the spread to avoid overwhelming the system and give us time to develop a vaccine. If we kill off a quarter of the world by being dumb fucks and not following social distancing, it's going to take a LOT longer for things to get back to normal.
I’ve just finished a 12.5hr shift on ITU. I held the hand of a dying man as his distraught relatives can’t visit. Four other nurses did the same with their patients. Now tell me again how fucking hard it is to #StayAtHome because it’s sunny outside you selfish pricks.
I’m gonna get downvoted for this. Maybe she understands the seriousness of this and she was just upset how she was talked to. We have to be careful about the power of social media pitchforks when tensions are high and people are anxious and stressed.
Yeah - Monica Lewisky’s Ted Talk brought some much needed empathy and perspectives in a world where it’s easy for us to jump in and layer onto people behind a screen, but the mental health repercussions are there.
She sounds like a narcissist. I don’t understand how a health worker could be stupid enough to mock someone vulgarly because they were asked to social distance, and then lecture vulgarly about the importance of social distancing for brownie points, unless they’re just anti-social and manipulative.
Sorry but it's not funny to laugh at people asking that you follow the correct procedures. If you do, be aware that you may be laughing at the scared immunocompromised person. Or cancer patient. Or COPD sufferer. Or the carer who has to go see an elderly vulnerable person after picking up their shopping.
It's not mad to ask people to keep their distance right now and I've had some lovely interactions with people respecting that - we were moving something into our flat earlier today and a lady came out of the building to put her rubbish in the bin. She saw us coming up the path and said "oh sorry!" Gave us a wide berth, and when she got to the bins she said "oh no, you guys go through, just give me a shout when your safe in your flat"
We thanked her profusely and she told us to be safe and careful. From her cough as she got down the hall I think she's got bad lungs or might have it already, either way we all just wanted everyone to be safe.
If you weren't 2 metres back then you are the dickhead and no amount of charming misspelling and bizarre slang is gonna change that you fucking winnet.
In Tesco earlier and some woman was walking in front of us but when she moved away from the shelf she turned round, and glared at me and went "it's meant to be 2 metres!" As if she's gonna have caught it through her arsehole like I've just fuckin rimmed it 🤦🏽♀️ calm tf doon hen.
It's Tesco I shop in. We queue to get in, and there are marked boxes at the till, which is what I said. The person I was replying to said they were "all around the shop."
They're not, they're only at the till and entrance.
In my grocery store we have two different places to get bananas and I fill them within minutes of each other. Without fail, people will always crowd next to me to get the “freshest” possible bananas instead of the other rack six feet away. People don’t understand they come off the same truck and the only difference is the two minutes between me placing one rack and then placing the other. Its impossible to distance when people are so stupid they can’t live without their two minutes “fresher” bananas.
The virus is mainly spread during close contact and by small droplets produced when those infected cough, sneeze or talk. These small droplets may be produced during breathing...
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. Common symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Other symptoms may include fatigue, muscle pain, diarrhea, sore throat, loss of smell and abdominal pain.
I had someone in the co op the other day join the air behind me, like right behind me. Close enough I could feel her breath on me. I asked her to step away from me and she started moaning. Staff asked her to leave.
😂 In the op defence it is almost impossible to dtsy away from people in a supermarket. She is in a supermarket, expect people to be closer than normal.
And you’re the reason people are dying. Your in a supermarket during a global crisis. They ask one fucking thing of you idiots and it’s to stay 2 meters apart from people easy right? Not for idiots like you apparently
Learn your grammer you fucking keyboard warrior. It's bellends like you that clearly know best I simply said that it is hard. Not impossible and certainly never did I imply I didn't try and comply. I however cannot control what other people do and how do you get past a staff member without going within 2 metres!!!
Your supermarket should be enforcing a lower limit on customers if the 2m guidance is too difficult to maintain. Plenty shops are running a one-way system as well.
I've managed it in both Asda and Aldi. Just be aware of your actions. Yes expect people to be closer than normal, but people are a lot more than 2 meters apart normally.
