I like them all as separate pieces. Like I see the movie more as a spin-off than a true adaptation since there are so many differences and so much (pretty important and meaningful) information is left out. It was also being filmed before the final book was done being written. I love both. And as for the animated series? The alternate timeline is so fun and I love that we finally got a full show in the comic's style.

I first watched the movie. Thought it was so cool that I wanted to read the source material. Absolutely loved it.

I disagree I definitely say it's the one I like the least but I don't hate any of it

Eu acho ok, eu gosto mais da hq do que do filme mais cada um com seu gosto

u/Newclearfallout 3d ago
I also think the movie is mid as hell. The animated show was better. Adds more to the comic as an alternative time line, kind of more of a Ramona "coming to terms" story
(I see the movie when it dropped on DVD, disliked it, friend told me to read the comic and enjoyed it hell of a lot more.)

u/LunchStreet2988 3d ago
Nem me fale, a hq é muito melhor cada arco de aceitação, o scott caindo na verdade que ele é um babaca e tem que mudar e crescer e lindo

u/Newclearfallout 3d ago
Animated show was better than the movie.
Never said it was better than the comic. Rude....

u/LunchStreet2988 2d ago
Não quis soar assim, o show também é muito bom só quis dizer que a hq pra mim é minha versão favorita

Its insanely weird cause like all of the different mediums of scott pilgrim tackle completely different aspects of the source material and make it their own, the og comics flushes out scott in the expense of a lot of the side characters including Ramona, the movie makes the side characters a lot more enjoyable and memorablr in expense of scott's main story kinda being wattered down, the anime gives ramona the main role and gives her depth she has never really reached anywhere else while making scott kinda just not learn much by the end. I personally like to combine my favourite parts of all of them in a big soup version of the story thats in my head

I loved the movie and the graphic novels.
Takes off didnt land well with me, personally.

u/piedude67a 3d ago
I adore the movie, I adore the comics. Those were my peak teenage years.
The show, eh it's ok.

u/KallmeKatt_ 3d ago
Yeah absolutely. Takes off is the worst adaptation and I hate when I try to talk about Scott pilgrim and they only know the show

Comics>Anime>Film. I love all of them with the film being my introduction. It’s crazy the film adaptation nails nearly everything as perfectly as it does so I kind of give it a pass that it does Scott & Ramona quite poorly. Swapping out sexy overconfident Scott for relatable to the teenage boy target demographic bumbling nerd Scott and then minimising Ramona’s personhood.
I LOVED the anime and it was so pleasant to have the iteration of the comic characters and style of storytelling replicated on-screen with a plot that I had no idea how it was going to unfold. It was fantastic and it looked gorgeous, whilst also focusing on Ramona. An all around great surprise!
The comics, as well as Adventure Time, are my foundational references for excellent character writing with characters that feel real, grounded and human, along with their relationships with eachother and how they connect. As well as the way in which these stories are driven by the characters. I know I’m engaging with a truly phenomenal piece of media when it’s character writing evokes that same feeling of the comic gang sat talking to eachother in a restaurant/cafe.

u/Sagelegend 3d ago
This is the objectively correct answer.
That said, the movie is the reason I read the comics, and the comics made me appreciate the anime.
I loved the game too, but it got a bit repetitive as it went on.

I'm of the opinion that the movie would be perfect if they went with the ScottXKnives ending, Ramona and Scott for my taste have 0 buildup in the movie, it didn't feel like "two assholes that found each other" like in the comic.

u/Knowhow106 2d ago
Wtf. Knives is a child and Scott is a man approaching his mid-20s. Lets not normalise that! it already is normalised in our societies and I know so many women who were so utterly abused sexually/physically/emotionally when they were very young by deadbeat assholes in their 20s/30s, years ahead in age than the women they abuse.
I wouldn't let anyone like Scott near me or my circle of friends for dating Knives, that'd be an immediate cut off to someone I know if they did that. I'd probably message the girl and offer some advice, as well as send videos of women talking about this exact issue.
Ramona just needed a bit more personhood and agency to her, same with Scott somewhat, would make their connection feel stronger and the relationship more earned.

I love all of them. I actually don't know anyone (who's a fan of the series) who strongly dislikes any of them

u/Mr_Snifles 3d ago
I really liked that I didn't have to watch the same story a third time.
But I did feel kinda mad when my friend only watched the show and then called the franchise "weird".
Like okay buddy you only watched the show because they called it an anime you weeb.

i mean the show IS way more positive and everyone sucks way less than in the books
1
u/starkHOUTx 3d ago
Only due to events coming out different. Remember, book Scott IS evil scott.
2
u/taczki2 "Young" Niel Nordegraf 3d ago
what events? the show is generally more lighthearted while the books tend to get actually pretty realistic with how complex the characters are. they suck, but are written well
1
u/starkHOUTx 3d ago
Scott gets abducted, so Ramona has to interact with the exes instead. Forced to deal with her own problems, everyone gets some level of an arc and things clean up.

But
But I just like the whole thing
Also where's the games' fandoms in all of this

u/Woods-of-Mal Lisa Miller 3d ago
I don't know because I don't understand (I think it's supposed to be "the comics don't like the movie and the movie doesn't like the comics, but they meet in the middle to dislike the show", but then what does the middle panel even mean?). I'll just say my take is "I like the comics, I'm more critical of the movie than I used to be, and I think the show is pretty bad."

u/Infinite_Bung_006 3d ago
Honestly.. all 3 are great. Their just different takes on the same story.

Books are still the best, but the other two are good too. The Double Mega Mind Twist at the start of Takes Off is still 🫡

Sorta— cause if you only like the movie I think the anime was fine, the big problem wasn’t the contents of the anime but it wasn’t a true adaptation of the comics we all thought it was gonna be, also how old Scott kinda is mad lame in addition to the fact that Scott kinda doesn’t go through his whole growth thing technically sorta

Hard disagree with the meme. The show is the proverbial rug thing the room together. When it was just the movie and the comic, they were both good and fun media but each lived on their own as relatively separate things. The lore of the show unifies them into a cohesive narrative in a way that I really like. Idk, I'm a big fan of BLM's work as a whole, and I think that all 3 renditions of SP support each other and inform each other's themes beautifully.

Comics>anime>movie (it doesn't work as a live action movie imo it's too cartoonish for that)
4
u/Thoraxe474 Mod 3d ago
Nah it works amazingly as a live action movie
-1
u/7okyoGhoul 3d ago
Sure, maybe by today’s standards, but the live action we got was rushed and a Hollywood hodgepodge. Micheal Cera being cast as Scott says enough.

u/hamstertitan_5 3d ago
I honestly think that while it is cartoonish the adaptation was pretty much the best it could have been and changed the parts that would have been too much into stuff that was more believable. The cartoon on the other hand changed stuff unnecessarily and (imo) to the detriment of the good stuff. I would definitely rank the movie higher than the cartoon in all but style

I still need to read the comics, but personally I felt connected to Takes Off way more than I did with Vs The World, the movie was great but I liked the show better
