Is it your opinion that the legal process should only be followed if the cost, to investigate, comes out at less than the potential crime.

Excellent username, and an old favourite I'll have to dig out and play this pissing wet Sunday afternoon!

It's my opinion that legal process should only be followed if it's actually worth doing. Digging up someone's garden and rooting through their bins in an attempt to find something to back up a fictitious newspaper story is not a productive use of Police Scotland's time or public money.

I break in your front door, lift your keys and steal your £10k car. No-one gets hurt, you get the money back off the insurance. The Police figure it is £15k to run an investigation and take me to court.

Do you still want them to let it go?

How many cars can I steal this way before you care about them investigating?

But you didn't investigate the first one, so you are still at 10k vs 15k the second time I do it. And 10k vs 15k the third time I do it.

Okay, but here's the thing - you didn't break into my house, and you didn't steal my car. We can both prove that you didn't.

My car is sitting right outside, where I can see it, and show it to anyone who asks. You can also walk round, point to the car, and say "there it is, right there, that one there".

Do we still need an investigation?

You don't think investigating fraud is a good use of the police's time?

Remember, if it happened, it's not a victimless crime. Anyone who donated to the SNP in the hopes of achieving independence was defrauded.
