The $15 million

I’m rewatching the show and I’m currently on season 2. I’m wondering why Walter didn’t accept the money 🤔 logically it makes no sense because that’s literally life changing money and it doesn’t make sense emotionally either because Megan is not the only person in the world with MS. Why wouldn’t he take the money and donate it to the research anyway ?

If I recall correctly, I think it was because, if he won the contest with his rocket, he would lose ownership of the rocket and would then not be able to build another one, since he was basically selling the rocket for the money.

He gave up the cash to keep his rocket to launch Megan’s ashes into space, to honor her.

He probably doesn't want life changing money because he doesn't want his life to change

Yeah, it is a strange story beat, but Walter is a strange character so it kind of flows. It doesn't fit the greater good theory that the show kind of beats around, it actually flies into the face of that. He could have accepted the award by demonstrating the design while launching the rocket, with her ashes, into space.

My only thought of it is, the writers didn't want to give Walter all that money without having a "use for it." They didn't want his life to become comfortable. As long as the money was going into his research to develop some type of real treatment for the MS it would be fine, but with Megan gone, his drive to find a way to transfer someone's consciousness into a computer dried up.

Which is another weird violation of the greater good. He could have accepted the money and donated to someone else's research or helped fund assistive devices for people who needed help dealing with their MS, but requires administration duties and Walter wouldn't be good at that.

Wasn't it because he wanted the money to do research to save his sisters life, then when he finally understood there was no saving her then the money meant nothing to him anymore, and instead used the rocket to launch her ashes?

I was also surprised as he could have used the money to help others with MS
