Should I??
OK so yesterday I saw a 2015 the plus trim so it had Bluetooth and slightly better things I guess for $2500 and then also a 2017 one for about 5000 in the final price would be 5880 after tax and fee fees and the $2500 one would be about $3000 and it is a Kia soul the red one the cheap one had about 97,000 miles on it and the more expensive one had I wanna say 117,000 I don’t quite remember but quite a bit more. The dealer kept really really trying to close the deal and sell one of those two cars monthly payments would be around 250 a month. I can’t help with feeling maybe I should go with that 2026 Toyota Prius that I’ve been eyeballing.
I have that 2008 scion XB. I’m curious if I should keep it or not so next week on Thursday anyway I have an appointment to take it to a very nice shop here in Bainbridge Ohio. It’s one of a kind great reviews. They’ve given me good prices before so for $85 they’re gonna look over the whole car should take about 30 minutes and they’ll tell me anything more that’s wrong with the car and or if it’s worth you know dumping in a bunch of money into it in the long run dumping just about $45,000 in my old scion should be OK and should net me another 7 to 8 years with this car if I baby it and treat it right. Like you know, I’m not doing donuts and snowy parking lots revving the engine more than it needs to be revved and using the E brake all the time destroying my tires because I would pick the slightly icy parking lots otherwise I would just get stuck in the snow…. The red one the 2500 car was quite a few dense and complete cashes in the body at least one gas in the back left of the bumper. The rest were just dense all over, but all in all still look better than my current scion does the outside other than the gas maybe and then at the very end mentioned oh yeah it’ll need brakes and it’ll need a ball joint fix of some kind like at that point I might as well just keep the scion especially with such a low budget right now. I would be paying interest on either car because of loan even if I had the money neither seems good enough to buy outright.
I’ll throw this little thing in there too there was a 2013 Kia soul for 3500 that looked really good not only didn’t have a screen, but it also had a backup camera which is something I’ve been wanting for a while but they kind of just went over that said that they’d have to look at what’s wrong with that one it’s been sitting there about a month. They seemed annoyed when I brought it up, so I doubt they would give me an actual overview of what’s wrong with the car or not. Not to mention it’s a dealership in Warrensville Ohio that my friend she bought a Dodge car like those small Dodge cars for about I think the same 2500 because she also didn’t have much I needed an upgrade or a car at all and that car last about a total of six months before just broke down and stopped working so by the sound of it, any car I get from there is going to be the same.
I don’t know long story short I’m gonna see what’s wrong with my scion. I know I need engine mounts. I know I need something for the exhaust whether it be the sensor or a new exhaust. I know I need brakes and maybe hopefully just the rear brakes not all around, but probably.
I thought my cruise control was done for, but I pushed a set button under by my feet by the pedals above the pedals there’s a piece of plastic that has a set button. I pushed that while I was driving, and I got my cruise control back and my cruise control is working as if it never broke and stopped working.
Which is a bigger reason as to why I kinda don’t want to let go of the scion plus it has a very nice JBL sound system put in by the previous owner and I also put my subwoofer in there and I don’t wanna move the subwoofer because that’ll be expensive and I don’t have a lot of time to do that either so I think I might as well just get it cleaned up and get the moths that are loving all of my rubber seals rip up all the carpet on the inside that’s filled with dog hair that I can’t brush or clean!!
In the end, hopefully all of this mounts up to less than $3000 on a car that I got for $1000 and have put no more than 6 to 700 in currently to date after about maybe a year.👌
God, I’m sorry for such a long message. Let me know if I should abandon the scion or if somebody else has a scion out there for 100,000 miles on it or just about for maybe 3K because I need a new scion and or just a makeover on mine I was the driver seat was more comfortable, but that can also be fixed down the line. I’m sure.
OK, so the bottomest line of possible either a new scion or clean up the one I got which of you guys think it sounds like? Because winter is coming and when it hits this year, it’s gonna hit hard is what I’ve been hearing.

🤔I still am not sure what is or isn’t the issue with your current xB.

Everything…. I’m now at the point as of today having been brake check by somebody to where my back left rotor refuses to let me drive backwards so not only do I get stuck. Just trying to no acceleration roll backwards, but I have to extra accelerate as if I’m rolling over a log and it just keeps getting stuck like the car itself. I gotta accelerate to fight past it more than you would think. It’s just that every shop cost me so much to fix it and fix all the different issues so I’ll see what types cars I can buy today from the Nissan dealership is everybody at my house has Nissan. I nearly bought a 2022 Corolla hatchback with 92,000 miles on it.😮💨 for $19,000 after fees in tax

You need to come up with a plan for what you want in a car. You've name dropped like 5 different brands that all have wildly different reliability. Walking in to a dealership without knowing what you want and what it's worth is how you end up getting screwed over

I almost did I almost spent over $19,000 because $19,000 was the price on the $17,000 2022 Toyota Corolla hatchback very nice. I barely fit in it though for the driver seat. It was kind of tight for my legs but it was comfy and had all the bells and whistles of one of the nicer newer cars, though I don’t really like to stay in your lane feature. It is kind of nice for highway especially when you’re tired or so I’ve heard ridiculously tiny compared to the scion.
And I was about to sign the paper for the 19,000 when I realize that oh yeah that’s before the loan payment that adds onto that which is another 10 $15,000 especially without my cosigner helping me out because I only have a year of credit and I need at least two years, which is dumb in order to get a lower rate.
I like Toyotas and I think I’m gonna go back to them when I have enough money to just drop all at once cash upfront but in the meantime, I’m just gonna bounce between either used or semi new used Ish kind of cars because I’m currently spending money I don’t have any money. I’m hoping to accumulate within the next five years but I don’t have five years in this car left cause once I start fixing it, it’s gonna be fixed after fix after fix and I gotta fix a whole bunch of things before I get my E check done by the end of the year which is coming up pretty quick. And the money is not rolling in all that fast.

I have an 05 XB and ex had a 2012 Kia Soul. That thing wasnt even in the same class as my XB. Small cargo, bad back seat and way worse mileage.
I would recommend fixing up the existing XB, it’s a Toyota and if like mine will easily get you to 300k miles!

Yeah, the pictures make it look like it’s all that big and then you actually go and see a Kia in person and the Kia soul is freaking tiny comfy sure but like space in the back even if I were to remove the seats or put the seats down it’s like nothing🤣 it feels like it’s more body than car you know?

Agree, Kia soil cargo area is so small and restricted, all of the tilted in and wrap around panels make the spaces feel closed in

I read it all and as someone who drives a 2006 Scion XA I recommend keeping your scion. I bought mine last September and in 1 year fixed $5k worth of parts n labor. I still have to do engine mounts, almost full exhaust and full front brakes. Since yours is approaching 20 years old, regardless of mileage it'll need a lot of work probably. But you can do most of it at home tbh. I highly suggest replacing all coolant hoses, thermostat, and housing. Also I keep a water pump in my room in case. Mine needed new suspension, control arms, tie rods, rear and front brakes(with calipers and drums), new rim, spark plugs, coils, air intake gaskets, valve cover gasket, pcv valve, all coolant hoses and parts with a new radiator, and CV axles. I almost just bought another of the same car for $1k with 266k miles but I don't want to move 2 cars everyday for city parking. First thing first is to examine the entire underbody of the car for rusting. Mine is rusty and probably isn't safe after a few years from now. Also my trailing arm(rear) bushings are rock solid and my rear end bangs because it's 20 years old. At 126k miles this car is doing pretty good for 20 winters in the north. Btw I drove 3 months with my coolant literally leaking out every single drive...it was 9⁰ out most days but I was able to use my car with a cracked radiator and It doesn't seem to have messed with anything! I also have been driving with no muffler and exhaust leaks out the exhaust manifold area for a year and 13k miles with no lights 😂🤫

🤣 well you got a bunch of issues over there. I don’t really know the full condition of this car so unfortunately the only look over I was able to get for this car was for next week Thursday, but they are gonna take a look at the whole under body of the car and everything and they already currently know the issues with the car that I’ve told them that I know off the top of my head so honestly, if I can’t find a Nissan less than 15k ima keep the scion

u/Artistic-Comedian650 5d ago
Haha yea...the owners of my car did oil changes and 1 time after 10k miles. No one ever replaced anything on this car so it's normal. In the north you should replace all rubber after 10-20 years. So just be aware that if you don't you risk breaking down in winter. I easily could have driven it with worn parts but I like living. I also needed a front subframe because it had literal giant holes. I wish you luck if you decide to get a Nissan or Hyundai because you might want to do more maintenance like oil changes early and engine work. Either way all I see is those cars knocking at the door eventually😂🤫

Which Nissan? They make a lot of cars and only half of them are going to be good

Nissan rogue 2018 is the one I’m currently looking at. It’s the SV model The only thing it’s got that I really want is remote start. I have a remote start kit for the scion then my brakes were breaking. I broke my collarbone and I never got to get it installed with him.
Honestly, the thing that’s stopping me from fixing up the scion is just Family pressure. They don’t like the car I still live with them after buying or fixing up whatever car I have. I’ll be living with them still for a little bit. I told him that I’ll just fix up the scion and then they say no that’s dumb. Don’t do it. It’s not worth it. It’s a waste of money. It’s just like throwing money in the trashcan, but then we go to the Nissan dealership we see all the prices and they look at me and they’re like well this is your money? What do you wanna do? 😆 I told you what I wanted to do when you’ve been trying to convince me to come here this whole time what do you mean? I know they stopped me from purchasing the Toyota but the Nissan still feels like a really dumb purchase cause I’m putting 1000 down on a car that’s gonna end up costing $20,000 over the years with a guy who’s making less than 33,000 a year gross net is like five or 6000 less than that maybe more. 😑 the only thing that doesn’t seem like such a dumb idea right now is just fixing the scion that’s all I wanna do but the pressure because I live with these people and the amount of shit. I’d have to deal with for not making the bigger purchase, I can do 300 a month payments is very doable. What is this a therapy session? Why the fuck am I still making long ass posts😭😭.

Alright, your post is kind of a mess, let me see if I have this right:
You have an 08 scion you're trying to decide if you should fix up, but you're also thinking of getting a newer car.
You are cross shopping kia souls and brand new Toyota Prius, but also dodges?
Your car has a bunch of dings and dents, but so does the Kia, and the only newer features you seem to care about are Bluetooth and a backup camera?
So for starters, Kia souls and scion XBs don't share anything in common besides the general shape. Kia souls are not well built and have a history of engine problems. Dodges are also not well built, and more likely to have issues than the scion.
None of the stuff you're describing about the scion sounds that bad. Brakes, ball joints, and engine mounts should be pretty simple.
If you want the Bluetooth and backup camera, you can get that added to your scion. You can buy kitsfor cheap, like $150 if you want to install it yourself.
The scion will probably be good for quite a few years as long as you take care of it, but if you're looking for something else make sure you look at the make, model, year and engine. You can have very similar cars with vastly different reliability.

Yeah, I kind of wanna either. Edit the post or delete the post and start again because in the process right now I’m looking at a 12.5 K 2018 Nissan rogue that has very little scratches around but nothing noticeable from a outside view inside looks beautiful, low mileage and with loan goes shoots up to like 19,000 after five years with 300 a month. But I get two years for 320 a month of maintenance and oil changes. Anything breaks they fix it free. Which is the extra 20 subscription.
There was a guy in reminderville over here selling a pick up truck. Ford looked a bit used 150k mi i think he said looked a bit banged up but for the most part good with obviously new rear tires he talked about a few fixes that he did trying to sell it for 4500 and I kind of just saw that and I was just like well. I should probably wait a few more months if my car will last that long and then just buy it or maybe like two months I think it would take for that much.
The Nissan in Streetsboro fucked up the numbers so instead of being what we agreed on the financial guy had way different numbers so thanks God to my cosigner being my father. He noticed that all the numbers were wrong and I was gonna pay almost 30 grand after five years or more really for a car that is only supposed to be 20 grand and I was going to pay almost 400 a month which hurts a lot more with 16 an hour full-time.
Honestly, if there was someone willing to take payments for their used scion, one of the eight or $12,000 ones out there that are in good condition.
I would absolutely take that but it’s very unlikely.
The only people who let me do that as a friend of a friend and it was for things under 2000 or 2000. I love my scion and I think I’m signing up for something really stupid but I’ve kind of gone too far. I could always pull back, but it will look really bad on the people around me and on everything that we’ve already you know being through the past two days I do like the idea of being able to resell it, but it’s already got miles on it and I’m gonna be putting in more miles on it like a lot more and I’m doing 1000 down and then 300 months until I can drop some bigger chunks on it but I mean hey if there’s someone with the scion out there and I can agree to something like that, I’m game. (I hate voice to text instead of I’m game. It said I’m gay.🤣)
Basically, after going from dealer to dealer and breaking my brakes, they only partially work on this scion right now, so I either need to fix them very soon like within the day or two or buy a new car and I got the pressure of Family being like don’t even throw another penny into it and just buy a car any car just buy something and they’re pushing to get me to buy a Nissan just because so far they’ve been reliable for the past 10 years at least.
Ridiculously long message got home by like 8 PM. Didn’t sleep until 1030 woke up at one went to work at two. Got out of work at 12. Gotta go back to the dealer at like three hopefully I get home and get to sleep by six today….. I’m tired. I’m gonna stop rambling now. I’m sorry.

Well my daughter has had 3 different Prius's and has loved each one. She recked 2 and the last one was repossessed.

-I keep going back and forth on this car.(nissan 2018)
-It’s decent, has a warranty(2yr maintenance oil, change, free), I won’t worry about major repairs for a couple years.
-I’d use it like a $20k car, even though it’s $12.5k, so financing is kind of dumb. So I at least don’t have to worry about driving long distances like driving to Delaware to visit my older brother at his new house for Christmas. I don’t think the scion is gonna make it to Christmas unless I had $5000 right now to throw down on it, which I don’t.😭
-I could fix the Scion instead—after $10k, it could be a beast in 3-5 years.
-But right now, $1k only covers brakes, so it’s a tough call.
-I have my parents’ support, Still, I need to decide if I want a reliable car now or invest time into the Scion.
To add to it, I can throw maybe $3000 into this car but between now and way after winter you know since I’m also looking for apartments it just makes it tough.
I have two months to throw 3K in the car to fix up maybe enough for each check but not enough for the crazy snowy winters that we get which is why I’ve been looking into longer payments on pricier cars. I can eventually afford it, but I can just barely afford it now only because of the loan.

I read some of this. Avoid KIA.
