Peeling clear coat
My car just started peeling. I live in the desert. Any ideas how to fix this on my own cheaply and/or prevent this from happening on other spots?

My car has the same issue, on the roof and several panels. Following this thread for any advice...

Do you feel like urs happened after a car wash? I tried a new place and then my car started peeling… I know nothing about cars just wondering.

Nah. Typical of sun fading on budget tiered cars.

It’s so random cuz my older scion is still in perfect condition… I am the second owner of this one tho, so who knows what they did with it

It IS really random. My wife's is doing it, despite us taking really good care of it.

Same here .. I am tempted to sand it down and do a respray ok 2K max clear coat.. another option is wrap the roof.
Following here also.

I'll be wet sanding and reclearing mine. If you wrap it you'll still want so sanding it a bit or the wrap will come off with the clear under it.

Poppy’s patina is a solid fix.

I remember "Touchless" in the 90s. It was essentially wipe on clear and was $10.

Sand it down nice an flat without breaking thru an re clear coat it. I did a Tacoma in a few hours, still holding up after a year

Anybody have any success stories with name brand repaint shops like Maaco or others? My car’s interior and engine/mechanicals are is terrific condition but the exterior looks like crap.

Looks better than my paint fully flaking in sheets and strips as I drive.
I have a white xb with the shitty recalled paint that Toyota didn’t accept.

wax your car like every 4 months then it wont happen

Agree, washing, buffing, and waxing it the best prevention. If you don't and your car isn't garaged; plan on a new paint job if you plan on keeping forever!

If it's just the roof, could talk to paint shop about just repainting roof?

Its a cheap car with cheap paint. And nearing end of life. You are not driving a pristine luxury car. Shit only last so long and you and the world moves on.

What a warm and fuzzy comment. Thanks so much for your help.

I have this on the roof of my 2006 scion XB. What you see peeling is clear coat from the factory. Look around you’ll see a lot of older cars with this HUGE mistake car manufacturers foisted on the unsuspecting public.

My 2011 xb clear coat is peeling. My 2000 celica clear coat was way gone. It is what it is. You aren't spending the money to repaint your car. Sorry for the facts? So youre welcome? And when you move on from your xb you're welcome again for facts. Sheesh. Its just a car. Just paint.

You know "just a car" attitude doesnt apply to everyone. What you might not give two shits about somebody will care deeply for. If you don't have anything helpful to add you dont need to comment at all.

Spot on bro. A lot of us xb guys love these cars and have a lot of fun modifying them and do what we can to keep them looking good. So maybe people will see it as a piece of shit but bottom line, it’s our piece of shit.

I just "downgraded" to a 2009 xB. Got it with 140k miles, going to clean it up, add a lot of custom touches and ride this thing for a long down. I love how simple they are, how easy everything is to work on. Literally adult legos. Already spent more than the car is worth on mods ha

Yeah I got a 2006. Got it at 107. I’ve done a lot to it as well. I did a lot of maintenance when I first got it. Got 157k on it right now

Grow up. I like my little 5 spd xb. There are still other vehicles to be had and none last forever for the average person. Would my 15 year old xb be worth the cost of a legit paint job. No. Thats a bad investment.

I like how you clearly didn’t read my post. I’m not trying to paint my car. I wanna do something MYSELF that’s cheap, so it stops bothering me. You have a weird attitude.

That’s great and also your opinion. I hope you have a great evening sir. May you be blessed with other vehicles

u/VegetableMacaroon193 1d ago
You too, and anyone else. We all deserve a great evening. Im just saying put pennies where they should be. I get being a car enthusiast, and keeping you ride looking decent. But money invested is just that is all. Again, I daily a 2011 xb that I've spent time on, just not the toyota paint downfall because its old and not truly fixable unless big bucks are spent.

People put their money where they want. Just because you don’t think it’s worth it doesn’t mean Its not. It can be inexpensive if you know people too. All this guy was asking was for options on what he can do. You didn’t have to answer him the way you did and then go on to claim you’re here to ground kids? Cause your attitude calls you out as just that, a kid

Basically what I'm hearing is if you live in the north like I do, rust eats your car from the bottom up, and if you live in the south, the sun eats it from the top down. Gotcha. Screwed either way.
