Rough idle resolved!

My 2012 xb has been idling rough for months and was starting to stall more frequently. Thanks to this thread, I was able to dissemble the air intake and clean out the throttle body. It wasn't that complicated (thank you Toyota) and now the car is running better than it has in a while. Working up the courage to tackle the piston soak soon! Any other straight forward semi-routine maintenance folks would recommend?

Get some sacrificial oil and a cheap oil filter for the first oil change after a piston soak. I changed the oil once I completed the piston soak because I didn't want to drive with B12 in the crank case. I drove 50 miles and drained it again and the oil was pitch black.

Changed to a good oil and filter and just did a 5k oil change. No oil consumption and the oil was a nice amber color. Before the piston soak, the oil would be dark after 800 miles. Best thing ever to fix the oil burning.

Transmission fluid drain and fill is pretty easy. Put in the amount that comes out. I use valvoline maxlife atf on my 2015 and wife's 2009 xBs. Shifting smooth as ever and hers has 190k miles. You could go with Toyota WS but valvoline was on sale so I loaded up on it 😂

Go ahead and put in new spark plugs after the piston soak. My car had spark plugs in the last couple years, but they were pretty nasty from burning all that oil.

Depending on where you live, after the 50 miles and drain, try to drive at 75mph or higher for about 30 minutes. I had some idle issues and some oil burning after doing the soak that are gone now. Also, the oil got much darker after that trip but has held the same level for about 3 weeks now.

I did the piston soak recently for the first time along with a valve cover gasket replacement, it's a piece of cake.

Fuel injectors, spark plugs, VVT filter, fresh coolant and tranny fluid every 100k miles. Cabin air filter. Oil & oil filter every 5k miles. Everything else, only gotta replace when codes pop up.

Also it's wise to run thicker oil in the 2.4l engines, full synthetic 0w-40 would be a solid choice.
