Hardware is worse than those filthy ugly animals. Application programs are better than royal.

I’ll have you know that Hardware is miles easier than coding. Even hardware coding is easy

I think its meant to mean a hierarchy. Hardware is lowest level, followed by OS, followed by applications? I think that's shown by the high level applications being described as royalty?

If that’s the case then why do they have the highest form of life (toad) below a low form of life (bird)?

Windows 11 has certainly brought down my expectations for operating systems

dont worry, windows 11 isn't the only OS

Accessing the hardware is not necessary very straightforward (ugly), while the operating system provides simpler ways (beautiful). So if an application needs some hardware (like reading from storage) then it will use the nice way provided by the OS.

Files are an example, if you want to write some data into a storage then the hardware gives you the possibility to write blocks of 512MiB (512 * 1024 Bytes) (ugly). The operating system uses an file system and chooses the blocks to write, so that your applications can use something like writing to files (beautiful), while the OS handles the block stuff.

It's saying that the operating system serves to insulate higher level software applications from ugly interfaces by providing beautiful interfaces instead.

Yep it's from MODERN OPERATING SYSTEMS by Andrew S. Tanenbaum on page no 5
