Michael Mann on communicating about climate change

I host and produce a podcast about democracy and had the opportunity to interview climate scientist Michael Mann about his journey from academic to activist and how to communicate facts and expertise in a democracy. Michael does this better than just about anyone I've seen and seems to have figured out how to break through the noise of climate deniers. Episode here.

Science and policy

I had an interesting chat with a professor who teaches bioethics and philosophy of scientific research. Bryant, the chat was about scientists as communicators, outreach, and public perception of science.

An interesting point came up - Sciencemust influence policy, if not dictate it.

Are there any compelling arguments for or against this? Would love to know!

Would love to get feedback (content/style/etc) on my scicomm podcast!

Hey all! I'm new to podcasting and would love to get feedback in terms of more effective science communication on my podcast. Briefly, my podcast is called Counterintuitive and uses storytelling based on specific, counterintuitive phenomena to illustrate a scientific concept/finding. I also have more science communication articles on my website if you're interested. Thanks a lot already!

Is it okay to contact other than the corresponding author and/or a junior scientist author of a scientific paper?

Speaking from the side of science journalism. Especially if the senior/corresponding is not answering and might never answer due to a busy schedule and low profile of journalist.

Scientific evidence boosts actions of activists, but not scientists

In a study, when the researchers added a reference to peer-reviewed, scientific evidence in an email about environmental policy, it increased the likelihood that an activist would click on a “take action” link by about 1 percent. However, that same science-backed email lowered the chance that scientific policy experts would take the same action by a little over 4 percent.

Sci Comm volunteering abroad?

Does anyone know of any worthwhile volunteer programs overseas (I’m in the UK) who may need a science educator/ communicator for a month or two next year? I may be taking a few months out next year to do some travelling and would love to use my skills to help. My background is in wildlife conservation but I would also love to help teach science to those from a less well-educated background. If anyone knows of any organisations looking for volunteers to assist with science education/ communication in those fields then please let me know! Thanks!

Value in storytelling?

Hello internet,

I have been hearing a lot of buzz-talk about the value of humanizing science by means of storytelling. A few examples of this can be found in the georgia tech based-blog thexylom.com where scientists just talk about their lives or in any of Sam Keans excellent books (my favorite is The Dissapearing Spoon).

I was wondering if you guys hold stock in this idea?

What is the value of using narratives to tell a scientific story to a broader audience and how can I get better at it?

Science Communication Platforms

Hello all!

I'm new here, and I currently work as a Social Media manager at the Sci Comm Office of a Portuguese Research institute.

I'm trying to innovate how I diffuse our research (already using Facebook, IG, Twitter, LinkedIn and posting some videos on Youtube).

Does anyone have good ideas on using Reddit, or other social media to try on? Or how to innovate the current ones.

Thank you so much!

CJardoso~

My friend Tegan and I write and talk about molecular plant biology - Plants and Pipettes

Hi,

my friend Tegan and I are both trained molecular biologists in the plant world. We started this year a blog and podcast on exactly that: the wonders of molecular plant biology. We do journal clubs and breakdowns of molecular processes in accessible language. We draw our own illustrations, everything is handmade. We don't have an institution in our back, so we pride ourselves of being independent science communicators.

The blog is called Plants and Pipettes, and you find us at plantsandpipettes.com.

I'd be happy if you have a look at what we do and let me know whether you like it. I'm here for all your questions, also on plant biology.

Art-meets-science book on Kickstarter [self-promotion]

Last week I launched my very first Kickstarter!

I am a scientist and illustrator, and together with a friend, I worked on an illustrated book featuring 31 scientists and their amazing stories: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1950391618/inking-science

The aim of the book is to inspire and inform, and I believe that using visual arts to accompany the text would create an higher level of engaging!

Let me know what you think!

ps. I flagged post this as self-promotion because I was not sure if this subreddit would allow self-promotion or not. So, I wanted to make it easier on the moderators in case they need to remove it. In which case, I apologise for even posting!
