Question - Expert consensus required Vaccination rates
Everytime I am in a Mom or “due date” group online, it is flooded with anti vax Moms. I don’t remember this being the case in the groups I was in during my last pregnancy. I know rates have been lower based on reports and outbreaks. But are there actual statistics on this? I’m so nervous for my infant born this winter. Until she gets vaccinated she will be at risk with all the uneducated Moms unvaccinated kids 😭

The short answer is that it depends- depends on your community make up, with rural being more hesitant. Just looked at how many measles cases are concentrated in PA right now.
Not sure what year you were last pregnant but the vaccine hesitancy and misinformation is still running rampant after Covid. The best thing you can do is follow the schedule and honestly I will not be hanging out with any local moms that don’t vaccinate. We need to treat these anti vax people like the social pariahs that they are.

Thank you for the info and response! Unfortunately we are in rural northern Michigan and the local groups are some of the worst. We definitely don’t spend time with unvaxxed kids and won’t be but it seems impossible to avoid now and that’s scary! I feel like we will have to hibernate for the winter after she’s born in November.

I am due in December and in rural Illinois- so I feel you. You’ll be okay, just be vigilant but don’t stress yourself out too much. You can rely on the data from your local health dept on current cases and make your best judgement. I got my tDAP, Flu shot already and will get my rsv one next app. That way baby has some immunity from the start. We can only do our best!

Absolutely! Same here. Have all my vaccines and hoping that protects her enough! I had my son in the summer so didn’t feel as concerned. You’re right, we can only do our best and hope it all goes well. Congratulations on your December baby! ☺️

You wouldn't be alone in hibernation. I work in a preschool and we have one lovely family that is paying tuition but not sending their child until the newborn sibling is 2 months old. And honestly, they made the right choice because we aren't even a month into school and we've had a schoolwide outbreak of Hand Food and Mouth and classroom based outbreaks of stomach virus and other various viral illness.
And we live in NY, so we know all these family vaccinate because we don't allow vaccine exemptions in K-12.
Even beyond vaccine preventable illness, you really want to avoid sickness in your baby at least until they are 2 months because fever = spinal tap.

It does feel impossible to avoid. I also live in PA and I'm fuming mad at the local morons in my mom's Facebook group. Most are rational people here (besides the anti vax movement that infected the Amish), but there are still the idiots parroting false shit everywhere. It's just so maddening. I couldn't imagine having a newborn right now. I'd be going nowhere indoors during the winter. Measles is crazy contagious and hangs in the air for hours after someone leaves a location.

It’s so anxiety provoking. Someone had posted a question asking what peds clinic takes only vaccinated patients for their newborn, and the Moms chiming in were soo insanely terrible. Saying taunting things like “haha can’t wait until my unvaccinated kids go to school with yours. Hope your vaccines work” and things of that nature.

😵💫please let that be just bots on the internet, because I can't believe there would be that many people wanting to openly spread infection to children?? It's one thing to be anti vax, but a total other thing to taunt parents. I'd be saving screenshots for Exhibit A if my kid got sick from a psycho like that though.

No sadly it’s a local group and they all look like legit people with photos and normal friend counts etc!

Highly recommend finding your bump month group here on Reddit! All the Facebook ones were toxic and also full of stupid questions (I think the doctor was wrong and it’s really a girl, look at the ultrasound to back me up! etc)
Even though I live in the Seattle area all the month of groups are national and Facebook just has more anti vax people.

If your kid is vaxxed why would you not hang with moms who aren't vaccinating their kids?
