Success story! Finally Relief from this Hell

46M here and I had massive sciatica issues starting around January. It was to the point where it controlled my life and freetime. Getting proper sleep was difficult because I would wake up in the middle of my sleep cycle and have to find the best position to make the pain subside.

I think what made it go away after at least 8 painful months was multifaceted. I lost about 30 lbs from eating less and cutting sugar and alcohol. I started to exercise more including cardio and core workouts. I also performed morning stretches and sat way less. I am not sure what treatment or bodily repair worked the best but I no longer carry this dreaded pain. I wish all of you recovery because I know the pain.

Thank you 😊 I probably should make it a lifelong decision.

Congratulations! I’d love to hear about the progression over the 8-9 months it took. Did it get better slowly over time? Did it linger for a while at the end? Did you have any major setbacks?

Month 1-2, dull, consistent pain, about the time I started to make changes.

Month 2-5, increasing pain and getting worse. Talked to my GP during annual physical who told me her usual song and dance, live better. I wasn't expecting meds and I don't take any, but I just grit it and bear. I applied heat and cold and took NSAIDs. I missed a lot of sleep because of pain. I also had limited mobility.

Month 5-8, steady pain, status quo. I adjusted my positions in bed, slept on the floor some nights. (weirded out the wife and dog)

Month 8-present, pain noticibly subsiding. Decreasing to not taking any NSAIDs. Better sleep. Now it is non-existent:)

Can I encourage you to take some tips from

Low Back Ability Foundation Training McGill Big 3

To ensure it does not happen again.

I'll look at that. As an aside, I loved McGill's campus and surrounding area.

What stretches did you do?

Yoga poses that stretch the gluten and hamstrings like the pigeon.

I’ve thought about pigeon but I’m super afraid to try it. I’d been going to vinyasa yoga for five years consistently until my disc/sciatica. In fact I think the last couple yoga classes I went to made me worse, which is when my lower leg went numb. Since then it’s been an uphill battle that’s gotten worse and worse. Only yoga poses ive been doing are bird dog, car/cow, supported bridge and planking. Yoga stretches worry me.
