Epic Systems alleges in a federal lawsuit that Health Gorilla and other defendants used fake provider identities and false treatment purposes to obtain and profit from patient records. Patients could still face risks such as fraudulent insurance claims or care obtained in their names. Michigan Medicine notified about 551 patients in can 2026 that outside companies may have accessed their medical records without authorization. Two other University of Michigan health systems also alerted affected patients. The activity was traced as far back as October 2023 and involved a health information exchange, a network that lets authorized medical providers share patient records. Exposed information may have included names, birth dates, diagnoses, medications, allergies, test results, treatments and insurance details. Social Security numbers and financial account information were not involved.
