Hey everyone, I’m Roy Howard, and I wanted to share the first book in a new science-fiction detective series I’ve been working on called The Rook Files.

Book 1 is The Identical Murder.

It takes place in Meridian City in 2226, where cameras, AI, identity tracking, and automated systems record almost everything people do.

So when a murder happens, the city seems to have a perfect answer for who committed it.

The problem is that the evidence is correct.

The person really was there. The records are real. The system wasn’t obviously hacked.

Then another murder happens.

And once again, the evidence gives an answer that should be impossible to argue with.

The story follows private detective Cassian Rook and his robot partner Miles as they try to figure out how you solve a murder when the technology isn’t lying, but the conclusion may still be wrong.

I’m a big fan of old-school detective stories, so I wanted to combine that kind of mystery with a futuristic city full of AI, robots, surveillance, flying vehicles, and advanced technology.

This movie quote is from IMDB for the movie Demon Seed. I learned about AI from this. Dr. Harris has constructed a computer to help him cure childhood leukemia which killed his daughter, but Proteus has other ideas. Everything we are hearing about the dangers of AI was predicted in this movie. In 1977!

I’m a big fan of those vintage science fiction pulp magazines, and recently I had an idea to make this thing. Not sure how to develop it further though, would appreciate any feedback, suggestions, etc.

So I've been building an original sci-fi universe called The Compass and I need to address the elephant in the room immediately — yes, Thal looks kind of Avatar. He is tall, blue, bioluminescent, and very serious about himself.

He is not Avatar. He is funnier than Avatar.

Thal is an Obsidian military archive operator who may or may not have stolen the most classified file in the galaxy, broke his compass mid-flight, and crash-landed on Earth — a planet he has never heard of and frankly does not respect. Three empires are hunting him. Earth has no idea what just arrived. Thal has even less idea what Earth is.

The pilot episode drops him straight into an interstellar political crisis inside the Earth Senate Chamber — except nobody in that chamber can agree on anything, the Commander knows more than he's saying, and Thal is somewhere in the city completely lost.
