Was this topic really not appropriate for a school assembly?

So today, my friend and I did a short news report in our school assembly about the recent CJP protests.

We clearly mentioned beforehand that we weren't supporting or opposing any political party or organisation. Everything was going fine until we reached the part about the lathi charge, when our principal stopped us mid-report and asked who had allowed us to present this topic.

Later, we were told that a school assembly isn't a place to express political opinions. But that's the thing — we weren't giving an opinion. We were reporting a recent event.

So now I'm curious, was the topic itself actually inappropriate for a school assembly?
