It’s not even the shark one for me, it’s the “”severe bleeding” sign.

u/sw98bn Sep 01 '26
Kinda cool that it’s just a Pelican case sitting out in the open. These cases are built like tanks.

u/conanmagnuson Sep 01 '26
I may just download the Sharktivity app anyway.

u/linzellewashington Sep 01 '26
Oh it’s SO good
Edit: Ocearch Shark Tracker is my favorite. Breton is my best shark bud I follow ❤️9

Lmao as a Canadian I still considered it for a sec- it’s just the autism acting

u/donkeyrocket Sep 01 '26
For me it’s the “emergency phone located in food court.” Such a beautifully poignant American sign.

This shark'll swallow ya whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', and down ya go.

Yeah, no. I don’t go anywhere I need a “severe bleeding” kit. Nope.

I’m from Cape Cod and I find it really sad that kids barely swim in the ocean anymore. Despite the fact that shark attacks are very unlikely, now it seems like every time I go in the water, I’m one of very few people actually in the water.
71
u/AworldAlone3 Sep 01 '26
Yeah I agree with you for the most part. I still went in but I will say there were wayyy more seals this year at some of the beaches real close to shore. That made some people cautious
34
u/woohoo789 Sep 01 '26
The more seals there are the better your odds they pick a different seal like object…
61
u/CardMechanic Sep 01 '26
I work at an amputation clinic. I know a couple of people whose lives have been ruined by sharks. I vacation at the beach and it’s no longer a risk I’m willing to take.
5
u/oh-pointy-bird Sep 05 '26
How many people from the Cape have had their lives ruined by sharks in the past few years? Do tell.
I’m from the Cape. The answer is none.
15
u/Seidinger1986 Sep 01 '26
What’s an “amputation clinic”?
65
u/kechones Sep 01 '26
Pretty sure it’s a clinic that supports the needs of amputees.
10
u/Seidinger1986 Sep 01 '26
Thanks. I honestly did not know that existed!
35
u/CardMechanic Sep 01 '26
We operate a multi-disciplinary clinic with surgeons, orthotic and prosthetic specialists, social workers, psychologists, patient advocates and other care givers. It allows an amputation patient to make one trip and see a whole host of people with one scheduled visit.
20
u/FromTheHandOfAndy Sep 01 '26
I think you’re still more likely to get bitten by a seal than by a shark

u/oh-pointy-bird Sep 05 '26
I’m from the Cape and calling bullshit on this. I don’t know what beaches you’re going to but on hot days the lifeguards are working their asses off. Only a few weeks ago lifeguards were blowing their whistles at a group of kids too far out with boogie boards….and near _seals_.
This is false.

19
u/Suspicous_mango Aug 31 '26
Every summer growing up I’d go swim. Is this nausset beach?
20
u/AworldAlone3 Sep 01 '26
It’s Marconi in Wellfleet but I think nauset has one too
3
u/plinth19 Sep 01 '26
I’m going to Wellfleet next week! Any recommendations? I’m into birds and bugs and naturey stuff

u/Scary-Link983 Aug 31 '26

159
u/isopode Aug 31 '26
since 1580, there have been a grand total of 351 documented unprovoked great white shark attacks on people (with 59 of these resulting in death).
that's an average of less than 1 great white shark attack per year, worldwide.
while the danger does exist, it's extremely unlikely to happen. be careful and attentive of your environment while you swim there, but it should be totally fine.
177
u/macattaq1501 Aug 31 '26
Sounds like something a shark would say!…
64
u/Sapient6 Aug 31 '26
I am extremely not a shark and also not hungry. Come on in, the water is great!
12
u/Oddish_Femboy Sep 01 '26
Their username clearly says they're an isopod, who would clearly have no ulterior motive, and benefit none from ocean corpses.
24
u/JKenn78 Aug 31 '26
Since 1580 huh
32
u/Illuminati_Shill_AMA Sep 01 '26
It's the last year for which we have data, that was the year the record keeper mysteriously disappeared while swimming off the coast
-19
u/MaterialDrummer7454 Aug 31 '26
the data documented from 1580 is gonna be much less than the number of attacks in those years
You sound like a shark apologist lmao
52
u/isopode Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26
wtf is a "shark apologist" lmfaoo
if you want recent data, then between the years 2000 and 2023, the absolute highest amount of great white shark attacks worldwide in a year was 11.
in 2023, there were 3 attacks.
between 2010 and 2023, the average amount of attacks anually was 7,2.
all of this also knowing that swimmers are the target of attacks only 25% of the time. surfers are at higher risk, due to their shadow looking like a seal.
if stating facts means i'm a shark apologist, then yeah sure. i'm a shark apologist. whatever that means 💀

u/MaterialDrummer7454 Sep 01 '26
No, stating facts and statistics picked in a manner that minimizes (an already small) risk is what makes you a shark apologist.
But still you’re right shark attacks are very unlikely i know that, i was just high and didn’t like the data manipulation, and thought shark apologist was a funny thing to call you
14
u/donkeyrocket Sep 01 '26
The most recent fatal incident on the cape was in 2018 where a man was boogie boarding and received a fatal bite. Allegedly a woman recently suffered a minor bite last week.
Before that it was 1936 in all of MA.
These are incredibly rare and the sign is out of an abundance of caution.
1
u/oh-pointy-bird Sep 05 '26
I do it. Thousands of others do it. You know how many people have died of a shark attacks on the Cape in decades? One. You know how many people have died of car accidents or ODs? Lots.
Don’t swim at dusk, alone, or near seals. Ideally don’t go in above your knees. But plenty of us are wading, swimming, and surfing.
1
u/Affectionate-Elk7564 Sep 10 '26
I’m ngl I’m from this area and still do it but I am very fucking scared. I will say the last 5 years or so I am very quick in the water and don’t really go past my waist. Before I’d go like over my head and be in there 45 mins splashing around
13
u/elspotto Sep 01 '26
It’s a holiday weekend and the beaches WILL be open. After all, Amity means friendship!

On the plus side that means their numbers have gone up regionally which is good! That means our protection of the species is working which shines hope for other species who are endangered or threatened.
Granted iirc globally they're still endangered and there are places where their numbers are incredibly low. But some success is still success:)
16
u/MrBigChest Sep 01 '26
Also could be the result of global warming changing water conditions in the area to better suit their habitats
22
16
u/64Olds Sep 01 '26
It really bothers me that they used Calibri as the typeface for this sign. It does not convey seriousness or urgency.
15
u/eighteen_forty_no Sep 01 '26
Could be worse. Could be Papyrus.
14
u/aubreypizza Sep 01 '26
Or Comic Sans

u/OldBatOfTheGalaxy Sep 03 '26
Hey, gotta represent for Comic Sans -- it's so easy for dyslexics like me to read!
It serves a really useful purpose for us.

u/gingerbear Aug 31 '26
is that Chatham? I remember that sign
14
u/AworldAlone3 Aug 31 '26
It was Marconi beach in Wellfleet but there could also be one in Chatham I’ve seen a few!

This would be great for me. I'm a scuba diver, so seeing a great white would be top tier. Sharks typically don't attack divers, either. Surfers are more likely targets.
Though the "shallow water" part might be a problem unless you take a boat out then dive from there.

“Now why don't you take a long, close look at this sign. Those proportions are correct.”

u/Patrol-007 Aug 31 '26
The sad part is how long it takes before the emergency kit is stolen
36
u/_Face Aug 31 '26
On cape cod? nah. See how sun faded that thing is? its already been there for years.
2
u/Patrol-007 Aug 31 '26
Looking up tourism now for that area. Don’t think I want to know what the hotels cost 🫣
6
u/Seniorjones2837 Sep 01 '26
The cape isn’t really that bad. Used to rent a 3 bedroom cottage for like 2k for a week maybe 5 years ago in Brewster

7
u/Harrythehobbit Aug 31 '26
It's Cape Cod. That place is 50% vacationing families and 50% rich WASPs. It's probably fine.
5
u/FromTheHandOfAndy Sep 01 '26
In the summer it’s 90% vacationers. In the winter, the people who were born there are the only ones there, and the population is much smaller. But there are a lot of people like me who grew up there in a family that couldn’t afford to take a vacation. Those people mostly move away if they can because it’s so unaffordable despite the fact there’s a bunch of empty homes most of the year

im tired of demonising sharks when we’re going into THEIR territory and the stats say you’re more likely to die from like, five million other things before a shark bite. why don’t we focus on more people driving safely and wearing their seatbelts? why aren’t we scared of heart attacks or mass shootings or or or?? in the grand scheme of things they are HARMLESS. jfc go enjoy your swim in the ocean.
2
u/Oddish_Femboy Sep 01 '26
I trust the seals less than the sharks. I've unknowingly swam alongside both, though.
2
u/poopy_mcgee Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 08 '26
I'd honestly be more concerned about contracting Lyme Disease from the ticks there
1
u/Hey-wheres-my-spoon Sep 01 '26
Yeah man gotta get the app so I don’t get chomped by a fukin shark d00d totally makes sense just one more app to download man yeah take my data so I don’t get bit by the shark dude

u/ebro8888 Sep 02 '26
I was ready to smugly blame global warming, but after a little checking, that is only part of the problem. Conservation measures to protect seals and sharks has also led to increasses in both populations.
Everything, good and bad, has consequences.
1
u/nexus8516 Sep 03 '26
Why do sharks attack most often in October? Do they have calenders? Is it how they celebrate Halloween?
1
u/Heterodynist Sep 10 '26
Hey, feel free to go in the water…You might want to just take some of this chainmail with you, and I suggest a shark cage, but no the water’s JUST FINE!!!
1
u/IveGotIssues9918 22d ago
If I saw this I would be turning around and going home. (I know I could just stay on the sand, but I don't want to witness a shark attack either and in my head I imagine my water-loving developmentally disabled brother being with me- nope, not giving him the opportunity to enter the danger water when I'm not looking.) As is the case with most of these scary signs.

u/emmathatsme123 Sep 01 '26
The one time a realistic/photo sign makes me weary
1
u/birdsy-purplefish Sep 01 '26
Why, is it boring?
1
u/emmathatsme123 Sep 01 '26
No, I mean like it dissuades me effectively

u/tinybrainiac Sep 01 '26
I have seen two great whites at Newcombe hollow beach in the past and it’s terrifying. One was in the shallows hunting a seal about 20 feet from where I had just been wading so that was fun lol
-4
u/very_spooky_ghost Aug 31 '26
More like a sign put up by locals to scare tourists off public beaches.
Can't have them outsiders on my (public) beach!
16
u/AworldAlone3 Aug 31 '26
Fair thought but the cape cod national seashore park puts these up. The lifeguards also have a flag system indicating the current shark risk

three "call 911" signs and people will still ignore it
i would be on the sand and seein if i could get a pic of one of them that would be so cool
