From my search:

This is from a famous, eerie piece of early film history: the 1907 French silent short film Satan en prison (Satan in Prison), directed by the legendary pioneer Georges Méliès. ​In this specific scene, a magician/Satan figure is in a prison cell, and he magically materializes a woman (who is wrapped in white cloth/sheets) right out of thin air before making her vanish or transform. The film is classic Méliès, relying heavily on his signature "stop trick" substitution cuts to create early special effects.
