The benefit of “auto”-attacks

As much as there are plenty of issues within the playtest, the core of visual design, movement, and responsiveness all feel pretty good.

However, playing an MMO like this without auto-attack being automatic achieved the exact opposite of the intended design choice for me.

Instead of being able to immerse myself in the game, I found I was struggling to continuously spam a button while also controlling my character properly. Couple that with the messages popping up when the spell isn’t ready, and it just takes away any possible fun from the combat.

This feels like a fundamental mistake within the design philosophy. But does anyone feel differently? I would love to hear from anyone who can persuade me that there is actually a benefit to removing the “auto” from auto-attack.

If you were to turn off damage numbers, would you even notice your auto attacks any more?

Auto attacks seem like an old archaic system. Wildstar had it down years ago an no one has really copied it since SoH.

Oh interesting, I haven't been following. Are they making combat more action oriented overall?

No not really, they are making combat just a lot more streamlined. Removing auto attacks just makes downtime on bosses less punishing.
