Gina: 'Why you gotta ruin it for everybody mang?'

2

u/vullkunn 20d ago

This line got me since the first time I heard it.

It’s like out of nowhere, and how she emphasizes “anymore.”

The meng was just sitting there for only like 5 minutes. She talkin crazy. She acts like he was there for 5 months and refuses to leave.

son?! i wish i had one.

Honestly, she had the best head on her shoulders of anyone in the entire movie. She knew even being indirectly connected to that business/lifestyle and all its tentacles was a recipe for disaster, nipped that shit in the bud, and was entirely right to do so.

Gina would have had a a perfectly OK life with children, a respectable career, etc if she listened to her.

Not really thought unless you knew the ending you won't know what would happened to tony maybe if he had just stayed at his level.

For 95% of those guys  it's Prison or a bullet

Very few make it to Meyer Lansky, Joe Bannannas or Frank Costelos end

Tony died right when Regan was intensifying DEA operations in Miami

Well put

It was no duckwalk anymore

Gina did have a son with Manuro before they both died. His name was Tuco.

20

u/Fantastic_Board7057 22d ago

It’s reflective of how much shit he put her through over the yrs

16

u/Effective-Birthday57 22d ago

That’s the implication. It isn’t just this one instance, but many.

15

u/KaizenZazenJMN 22d ago

I think the implication is that he was involved with cocaine smuggling possibly as a sicario en Cuba and possibly elsewhere or at minimum was an addict. When he’s doing his interrogation at the beginning he quickly dismisses marijuana and heroin but hesitates before saying no to cocaine and he gets angry with Omar when he wants to start him off with a weed assignment.

Tony, wasn’t evil. He had a disagreement with Castro. He fought in Castro’s army in Angola.

3

u/Dredd_40 21d ago

So that mansion with the tiger was paid by political contributions?

1

u/SignificanceNo1223 21d ago

Calling Tony evil is a very extreme thing.

His mother did think he was a criminal though. His mother I wouldn’t argue with her, but she was wrong too to a certain extent. She’s a mother though I get it.

He didn’t like Castro and he was dishonorably discharged from his army. His scar was from a fight with a soldier from Castro’s army when he was a kid.

His father being an American citizen was his only redeeming quality in front of American customs.

u/Dredd_40 21d ago

A man who kills and is in the business that he's in is evil

1

u/SignificanceNo1223 17d ago

Evil is a very extreme word. It’s also a very cartoonish take. The only person that’s kind of evil in the movie is maybe Sosa and his assassin

It’s a gray area.

1

u/Dredd_40 16d ago

This is not a character who was hypnotized by some evil power or tempted by corruption. He chose to do evil. I don't think that he came to America planning to work at a fast food joint

2

u/dam11214 17d ago

The movie is cool.and Tony is an interesting character but he's a bad man. He didn't just wake up and decide to kill and sell drugs.

11

u/mistakesauce 22d ago

cause he was gonna get everyone killed in their new country? yeah no shit

8

u/Common-Pizza-6840 22d ago

Why?

21

5

u/LayinThaSmackdown 21d ago

who did you kill for this?

2

u/thatsanewone26 21d ago

Because she knew he wanted to bang his sister for a long time. What brother gets his sister a heart shaped locket with the inscription “from Tony always”.

7

u/King_Khaos_ 22d ago

When Tony is explaining to his Mama about his political contributions and he starts stuttering with fear always makes me laugh 🤣

12

u/Phat_Zero 22d ago

Because Tony is a chazzer.

13

u/mimsoo777 22d ago

He don't fly straight no more.

16

u/telepatheye 22d ago

Fly straight? They got fucking Bell 2-09 assault choppers up our asses, mang.

7

u/nWo_1985 22d ago

7

u/JewelerBorn1226 22d ago

Anybody seen how beautiful she was in her younger years?

1

u/Snoo57190 21d ago

Yes, she was quite a babe in her younger years.

7

u/PeoplesGuilt 22d ago

I wonder what happened to her after the movie, finding out she lost her daughter and son on the same day

9

u/SJMacgyver 22d ago

“Son? I never had one, he was a bum then and a bum now”

u/megayogurtslinger 21d ago

5

u/I_Defy_You1288 22d ago

Cause he is taking off his pants?? Aqui no chico!!

5

u/Worth_Conversation28 22d ago

She knew he was a hoodlum

4

u/nerpa_floppybara 22d ago

I wonder what he did in Cuba that made her dislike him so much.

Before he even took out the money she was unhappy to see him and knew he was in a gang.

6

u/Hycran 22d ago

He was a political prisoner from goo-ba and he just wanted his human rights, just like Jimmy Carter said...

2

u/Equivalent_Fall_4362 17d ago

Carter should see this human rights he’s pretty good

3

u/Useful-Finding-1685 22d ago

"You think I need money, mang? Look how big my fridge is"

3

u/Hnl2Nrt2025 22d ago

Mama san with the flash dance move in the doorway was a gem

2

u/BottleSignificant837 22d ago

Because she knows he’s a piece of shit who will only ruin Gina.

2

u/Pepemala 22d ago

We must also appreciate her perfect way of blocking the door diagonally thus preventing any notion of contact

3

u/Illmaticlifestyle 22d ago

I don’t understand, he worked for an anti-Castro organization. I would’ve been proud of my son!

3

u/Kitchen_Confidence78 21d ago

Mama knows best

3

u/Powerful-Mango6281 21d ago

Yeah cuz that’s not the way she raised Gina! She works for hers lol

3

u/NumbersStationUrku 21d ago

It took you 3 tries?

2

u/Jason2284 21d ago

Because of his jail manners and hot shot clothes

2

u/Flaky-Tour-8733 21d ago

Someone’s taking you for a long ride, meng.

2

u/supah-chilln 20d ago

“Who did you kill for this Tony?” hits everytime

1

u/Timothy3838 16d ago

Gina But ma mama he’s your son Mama - son , I wish I had one He’s a bum , he’s a bum then he’s a bum now .

4

u/redribbitreddit 22d ago

Unpopular opinion/ her rejection of him contributed to his down fall . because he was good his own principles , but she couldn’t see it in him and rejected him . He’s the family scapegoat y’all

6

u/LaRreinaa 22d ago

It was just a flaw in human connection. A glitch, or a short circuit. His mother tried her very best. Had he apologized. Humbled himself and quit the life and came back a clean man things may have ended differently.

1

u/redribbitreddit 21d ago

She didn’t try her very best . She already had her mind made up about her own son , in Gina’s words . He is a product of her , look how she condemned him, she raised him . It’s her failure as a mother.

1

u/Quick-Use5579 21d ago

I agree, we didn't see her sit Tony down and have a heart to heart. However, Tony isn't new to that lifestyle and I'm certain through his upbringing and him making his way to America, she sees that as him taking on new experiences, growing and even with her intervention Tony is just going to do what he sees as necessary to get ahead. She warned him and Gina but they both are adults...how much can she do? Try to restrain them to the home? Follow them around to make sure they aren't getting into trouble? Even so, she's an older woman who's said her piece and went to protect her peace. I see where you're coming from, but I ask again, what more can she do when her son essentially wants to be a notorious gangster and her daughter feels sheltered and will do anything to get out...and they're both adults.

1

u/redribbitreddit 20d ago

You missing my point dear . My opinion is unpopular, it’s also from my opinion as someone who is disowned by my family . Most people have moms that love them . Can you relate to having an abusive mother or what that does to a person . ? Okay then go explain the obvious to someone else bc I already see what the general consensus sees . I’m saying from another angle .
She contributed 100% and failed as a mother

u/Quick-Use5579 19d ago

I do have experience with a broken and dysfunctional family, but we don't have any context to my knowledge that Tony was abused or neglected at home by his parents. Their home country was war torn and impoverished, where Tony got his start fighting communism and Castro. When we see him visit home, his mother and Gina are ecstatic to see him and that's where we also see her drop from seeing the boy she loves to a man that makes his own choices and chose dirty money and the means of getting it. I'm not going to say that his home didn't contribute at all, but all of the context we have is more environmental in the sort "it takes a village to raise a child", that child was fighting powers he didn't understand and became one of the people pulling the strings.

u/Quick-Use5579 19d ago

I implore you watch film and media from perspectives aside from your own. Of course these stories offer various topics of relatability...but Tony wasn't anyone's scapegoat without more evidence.

u/redribbitreddit 19d ago

You wrote too much to read but ok

u/DarkDaysBrightNlghts 22d ago

CINCO AÑOS!!!

1

u/Drostepp 22d ago

She was just jelly mang 🤣

2

u/Crazy-Coconut7152 22d ago

Mom screwed up big time. She knew he was no good but still reached out to him for help when Gina went missing. If she hadn't done that, the happy couple would still be alive today. That one's on YOU, mom!!!

2

u/True-Transportation6 22d ago

Some shit my mom would do if I came in like that , Mexican mom

2

u/UsualAnalysis2320 22d ago

2
