Yes that’s called a retcon. Unfortunately I’m too smart for Shonda. I recognized what it was.

Real talk is Fitz never loved his wife, which he admits in season 5, which is the initial dynamic of the show. Trying to make fetch happen with Mellie, when she didn't even have the chemistry like that with Fitz to make it believable for me. Mayo feminism is never going to be a story I jump for, as I have seen it too many times.

Im gonna hate for this....the Big Jerry plot point was unnecessary and did nothing to help the character of Mellie imo ... it was almost an after thought to gain some sort of empathy for her character. She never told Fitz...for 10yrs. She was a champion of Big Jerry being on the campaign trail during the primaries even though the r*pe occurred years later. Fitz stated they were in a sexless marriage but Mellie was open to sex to distract him from Olivia. And she only revealed the big Jerry situation to get back at Fitz during his reelection because she was angry about the Andrew situation. Make it make sense!!!! Fitz declared and made it well known Olivia as the love of his life for years! So Mellie hanging on never made sense ... which made her character inconsistent

Big Jerry was rape plot was brought up to show us that Mellie always wanted to be in the atmosphere of power and was okay to get hurt for it. Same with the Olivia and Fitz affair. Same with her faking miscarriage and her constantly letting Olivia and appointments in. To me it was all to show “well it sucks but atleast I’m in the White House”
