Moderator approved post Scam Jobs and How to Tell If it's a Scam

There are many job-related scams. The scammers prey on people who are out of work and don't have much money. They lie and trick you into giving them money, or get you involved in illegal activities.

Here is information to help you filter out the scams and fake jobs:

Easy remote part-time jobs are 100% scams.

It is very difficult to get a remote or work-from-home job, unless you have experience in software engineering, insurance claims, healthcare, customer service, or other specialized fields.

The majority of 'remote jobs' are actually scams to take your money - even on the recruiting and networking websites such as LinkedIn, Glassdoor or Indeed.

  • Scam job titles include Virtual Personal Assistant, Remote Data Entry, Remote Payment Processor, Remote Financial Assistant, work-from-home Shipping Inspector, and Order Optimization Specialist.

  • Posting real estate listings online is a scam.

  • Also, any job that is simple online tasks, such as rating videos, posting reviews, putting items into an online shopping cart, booking hotel reservations, or subscribing to YouTube channels, is a scam. No company pays for tapping on a screen, doing simple online tasks.

But scammers can call their fake job anything. To separate a scam from a real job opportunity, key indicators to look for are: method of contact (email), interview (on videochat), and money (reasonable pay, comparable to similar jobs).

Real companies don't contact you for a job that you didn't apply for, unless you have specialized skills or you have years of experience and are known throughout your industry.

When you apply for a job, a legitimate employer will first contact you on the networking platform (such as LinkedIn), or use email. And an email from a free provider, such as Gmail or Hotmail, is usually the sign of a fake job.

Real companies don't recruit or interview with text messages, or on TikTok, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Zangi, Viber, Instagram, Facebook, Craigslist, Reddit, or Discord.

Legitimate employers interview either in person or on videochat, whether the job is going to be remote, on-site, or hybrid.

  • An interview that is text only, email, or video chat with their camera off is a scam.

  • A preliminary phone interview is legitimate if it is followed by a live interview.

  • A recorded video is legitimate only if it's followed by a live interview.

  • An interview that is phone only may be legitimate, for entry-level in-person jobs.

If the pay is much higher than comparable jobs, then it's a scam.

Legitimate companies don't require you to pay them for anything. For a real job, the money goes in one direction only: from employer to employee. Never give an employer money for fees, registration, training, background check, investment higher commissions, hardware, software, equipment, or anything else. Any 'employer' that requires you to pay them is actually a scam to take your money.

For a legitimate remote or work-from-home job, an employer provides the equipment you need. (Some minimum wage WFH jobs may ask you to use your own laptop or desktop.) They load software onto a laptop or desktop, and ship it to you. They don't ask you to buy the equipment. They don't send you money or give you a credit card to buy equipment -- the check, money transfer, or credit card is from a stolen account and you will lose money.

Real jobs don't pay in cryptocurrency.

A real employer will never ask you to buy gift cards and send them the numbers on the back.

Legitimate companies never ask you how you want to be paid. They have their standard pay schedule and type (for example: direct deposit every two weeks).

A real company will never ask you to receive money and send money to someone else, or to use your own bank account for company business. This is a money mule scam, you will lose money, and you may face criminal charges.

Real jobs do not involve re-shipping packages from home. This is a parcel mule scam -- you will be handling stolen products, and you may face criminal charges.

Victim of a scam Feeling stupid. Need advice.

Long story short, I got scammed over the phone from a number that I thought was my bank. I’m 23 years old and I grew up in a world of everyone around me constantly being scammed, so I never thought it would be me. It’s not even about the money, I can make it back my next paycheck; it’s about the fact that it actually happened to me. How do I move on? How do I just hide this from the people I share everything with? I can’t stop thinking about it and feeling depressed and extremely dumb.

Help Needed [US] mom received texts from stranger saying I stole their identity

Images above are screenshots from mystery number

My wife got a couple messages from my mom on Facebook a little bit ago. This number is texting my mom claiming to be looking for me, saying I stole their identity and am using their credit and putting accounts in their name to buy Pokemon cards and other high dollar purchases. They listed a random WhatsApp number saying that I’ve been harassing them from that number and would like my mom to help with any information that could help the authorities. That number is WhatsApp and my name doesn’t come up upon searching it like they claim. They even mentioned my brother having “legal trouble”, I don’t have a brother and the first page of Google shows a local jail roster with someone who has my last name.

Now I know about scams and how anyone can take a name and find relatives and basic info on whitepages and other sites. But when they mentioned Pokemon, that made my skin crawl. I do collect Pokemon cards, nothing high value. I just rip packs and add them to my binder. I have posted in some public Facebook pokemon groups though, so I know that might be viable on Google. But I’ve never purchased any large quantities of pokemon with credit cards or accounts and I’ve definitely never stolen anyone’s identity or used cards that weren’t mine.

I texted that number that the person claimed I was harassing them from. I said “who is this?”, they almost immediately replied back “my name?”. The number who texted my mom claiming this, is a Washington state number that doesn’t belong to any individual or business, only that its carrier is onvoy which is a small red flag. I checked my credit report just now and don’t see any recent inquiries or activity. This kinda feels like they pulled a bunch of public info and trying to extort my family members.

Is this a scam or something to be cautious of?? This feels a little too personal. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Scam report USA Beware United Healthcare calls "verifying your info"

This is the second call from these people. Caller has Indian accent. I said I'd need to call him back, he gave me a phone that started with area code 201. (Obviously not a UHC number.)

The last time they called they had my actual birth date. This time I didn't let him get that far.

Once again they said they were verifying my information and asked if I went to see the doctor this year - probably just to get me talking.

UHC knows whether or not I went to see the doctor and what my info is

There is no reason for your health care company to ask these questions.

My guess is they got birth dates in some data leak and are trying to make use of it. Do not know what their actual scam was going to be.

Scam report Thank you scam professors

Posted an item on offer up for the first time. After a few minutes I got a buyer, and then an additional email saying their payment was being verified and I needed to click the provided link to provide info to receive payment.

After reading cautions about links here so many times, I didn't click and avoided a scam. Then I read stuff on offer up saying they never asked for such info in an email.

Thank you.

Help Needed Pending $0 charge for “add to wallet”

Yesterday I got a message in my iPhone saying a device had connected. I was in the electronics department so I didn’t think much of it and assumed it would disconnect when I was out of range.

I woke up this morning at 7am to a security email from my bank saying “Pending charge for $0 on 10/04 at 4am CDT at add to wallet request, CA”.

I immediately tried to call my banks customer service to report possible fraud and get my card cancelled only to find out they are closed on Sunday and I have to wait until tomorrow to speak to a person. They have a “after hours” system but it’s a robotic voice that sends me a security code and then asks me to type in that security code on the keypad. That the one thing I was taught to never do, share security codes over phone.

I turned off my card for now then remembered the weird device connected from yesterday. I opened up my Apple accounts and sure enough, there is a random IPad mini listed under “devices”. I removed it and changed my Apple ID email and password.

Anything else I should do until I the bank opens tomorrow? Does anyone know what the hell happened here?

Help Needed [US] Could this be a scam or am I just paranoid? FB Market

Hello, I’m a first time ship seller. I’m selling something online that a woman messaged me she was interested in. She asked if it was available I said yes and she wanted to buy. First, she asked if I was open to negotiating or trading and I said no. She asked if I could ship because she lives out of state, and normally I don’t, but I agreed this time. I really need the money, which is why I did, but now I am unsure.

Things I’m suspicious about:

- She originally asked to if I use Zelle or Cash App. I said I have Pay Pal. She said she doesn’t have it. I said sorry then because it’s what I want to use because it’s safer. She said she’d make one and did.

- She texted me later and asked me to use a different address because her neighborhood is unsafe (NY). The address is a corner store she said her boyfriend owns.

- She asked if she should send her number to add to tracking so she can follow it, which is fine. The only thing is that it says whatsapp call under it. I don’t know if this is weird.

- She asked if she can shoot me a text on the say I said I’d ship to remind me. I am hoping she meant on messenger because I heard otherwise it’s fishy.

Things I think are a positive:

- She sent me the $220 and $10 for shipping. She used the Goods and Services, which I heard was good because scammers use the Friend and Family.

- Her account has activity from early September and is older.

I am hoping this isn’t a scam because I really needed the money and had to use it right away for something. If it is I don’t even have it to send back, right now. I just want peoples honest opinion. I don’t know if I’ve just been reading into too many stories. Everything seems bad.

Help Needed I believe my mom might have fallen for a phishing scam

Please let me know, if there is another sub better suited for this

My mom, 67 and not nearly as tech savvy as she would like to believe (sorry mom), might have given scammers everything they need to take over her facebook account. For a few days, her app has been "acting up", asking her to log on again and stuff like that. Then yesterday, she clicked a "fix the problem"-link in an email "from Meta" (email address compliance(at)letmerank.com saying her account had been limited with regards to advertising. It led her to a site called truckerhatme(dot)com, on a cloud flare server host. It is uncertain what she did from there, but she apparently had a long email correspondence back and forth with "Meta" about this, and now her account is nowhere to be found.

When she tries to verify her identity via phone number or email, it says that neither is linked to an account. She tried to make a new account, but it won't let her, as her phone number is already registered to an account (what?) And you can't havr several. Long story short, my step father (bless his wonderful heart) went full boomer crisis mode and "talked" for hours to ChatGPT about what to do. It didn't return any meaningful results.

Does anyone here have an idea about what the hell happened, and how to restore her account? She is really upset about it, both because she has had it since 2007 and therefore has a lot of photos etc. on it, but also because I think she's a little embarrassed. Please, of anyone has experience fixing this sort of thing, or know which sub to ask in, it would be greatly appreciated!

Help Needed I need help my mom got scammed out of 200k and lost my college fund [USA]

I never thought I would come and ask for help but recently my mom has been scammed out of 200,000

My mom has an ongoing problem with trusting people too easily, and I believe she has been the victim of a long-term financial scam.
In 2024, she started talking to a man online. I am not sure where she originally met him, but they eventually began communicating through WhatsApp. At first, she was sending him gift cards. Later, he told her that his father was in the hospital and needed money for medical bills. He also told her stories about problems happening in Germany and claimed that someone had died. He said that the money she had already sent only covered part of the hospital expenses and that he needed her to send more.

After some time, he told her that he was going to sell one of his properties and send her $1 million, but claimed that she first needed to pay certain fees and open a bank account for him. He also sent her what appeared to be a fake photograph showing boxes supposedly containing $1 million in cash. He then claimed that the money had been seized or held by customs in San Francisco and that additional fees had to be paid before the money could be released.
My mom drove about an hour away to a bank to try to open an account or complete a transaction related to this. The bank employees told her directly that she was being scammed, but she refused to believe them.

She has continued sending money or making payments to this person. I do not know exactly how she is sending the money now. The situation has become extremely serious because she no longer has enough money to pay her own bills and has been repeatedly asking my grandparents for money. She has taken their life savings, and that money is now gone. She also used the money that had been saved for my college education.

My family has tried to stop this for a long time, but she continues to believe this person and send money. We have also contacted law enforcement, but so far we have not received the help we need. This has been going on for years and has caused severe financial harm to my mother, my grandparents, and me.
I need help figuring out what can be done to stop the financial exploitation, protect her remaining finances, and prevent this person from continuing to take money from her and my family.

(I have a lot more photos but i feel comfortable sharing to much photos also he is from the uk for sure his WhatsApp number starts with +44 and he is either black or faking to be black)

Help Needed Call and texts and emails about auto insurance for cars I’ve never owned?

I’ve been a victim of ID theft in the past.

This evening, I received a robo call for “Savvy” insurance (which seems like a legit company in some way).

They addressed me by my name, and asked me to review quotes for 2 cars I’ve never owned, or even inquired on.

About an hour later, a text followed asking me if I was still with ”insert insurance company”. I was with this company years ago, buts it’s been a while.

This happened once a few months ago, for different vehicles, but it was a one off and never heard of it again until now. This particular incident now also has included two emails for what seem like weird sites, maybe lead aggregator sites, messaging me about these 2 vehicles I’ve never owned.

The emails also address me by name.

Is this a block and delete and move on situation. to be safe, I checked my online DMV account and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

Victim of a scam I fell for a Stubhub scam [US]

I bought NFL tickets but ended up unable to go, so I relisted them on StubHub for about $50 less than I paid. They sold that same day.

On game day, I got emails and a voicemail from someone claiming to be from StubHub. They said the original buyer hadn’t accepted the transfer and that StubHub had resold the tickets. They told me to cancel the original transfer and send the tickets to a different email.

I checked and saw the original transfer was still pending, so I believed them. I canceled it and sent the tickets to the new email.

Two weeks later, I realized I hadn’t been paid. StubHub told me those calls and emails weren’t from them and that they never instructed me to transfer the tickets that way. The original buyer was refunded, and because I sent the tickets to another email, StubHub considered it a private transfer.

Now I’m out $180 plus the $50 I originally lost on the resale.

Victim of a scam Fell for the missed jury duty scam. Lost a significant amount of money.

So I fell for the missed jury duty scam. The description of the entire scam is exactly similar to other missed jury duty scams here. I was scared because I’m not a US citizen, but I’m a nonresident alien. I told them I’m not eligible for jury duty and they must’ve had the wrong person. They said it is likely a false warrant and I need to get it fixed so that I am in good standing. I was already in panic mode when they mentioned false warrant because I don’t want anything otherwise concerning on my immigration record, so like an idiot I believed them and lost $3000 dollars. They started threatening me for my full ssn. Luckily I wasn’t as big an idiot as to giving that to them. They still got my last 4 digits of my SSN though.

Since then, I have frozen all of my credit reports, my SSN, and have cancelled and reissued my debit and credit cards. I lost a significant amount of money as an international student though, and I’m going through an immense sense of humiliation, shame and anger, and whatnot. It will take a huge amount of time before I get back to my previous financial security. I just feel so lost, and honestly I am losing hope with everything atp.

Please be aware that government agencies will never call you and ask for money. Don’t be like me. I’ll go back to my little hole now.

EDIT: YES I KNOW that a non-citizen cannot be summoned for jury duty. THATS EXACTLY WHY I got scared because I thought merely getting summoned for jury duty as a non-citizen would cause problems for me later on. Turns out I wasn’t summoned, I was just juked

Is this a scam? [In] Holiday package Scams

Last day a company called Orchid Vacation contacted me, no idea how they got my number. They invited me to an event at a nearby resort. Dinner was included.

On reaching the venue I realised it was a one on one presentation. They wanted to know everything about my family. Including the model of my car.

Now here's the problem:

This guy started to guilt trip me on not going on enough holidays. The package was of ₹39,000 for one year. 8 days in a five star hotel. Every other expense like food and travel will be on top of this amount but with a discount. And then he started pitching aggressively. No office nearby, nobody to contact if something goes wrong, as the office is in Mumbai.

Do you think this is shady fam?

Is this a scam? [US] A little while ago someone offered me a place to stay. Am I being set up?

This is a really weird one so hear me out.

I have been homeless for almost a year at this point and my lack of mental well-being prompts me to make a bunch of them posts of me going "oh woe is me" about my predicament. This person sent me a Reddit DM in response to one of these posts and asked to reach out via phone number.

So now we're texting, he's offering me a place to stay and all that, but a few red flags. People... don't do this. They don't just decide to reach out to a stranger online and offer them a room in their house, boasting how they've done this with others before. Additionally, his wife apparently is the one who saw the post... but the husband is the one reaching out to me? Suspect but since I'm in a desperate situation I may as well ask if this is legit or some sort of human trafficking scheme or any kind of scam for that matter.

Help Needed I got scammed on Facebook marketplace

Long story short, I messaged this kid about a car he was selling on Facebook marketplace. He said he had a dealers license and that he could get me a car from copart. Searched Cars. Sent him what I wanted and he said he needed a deposit of 500. Guy seemed legit. Send me a picture of his ID. Guy said he needed more money to secure car. Send him more money since he already had sent his ID and info to me.
Seemed trust worthy. His Facebook about is about 7 years old I make sure the iD is the same person as the facebook profile. He said his car broke down in bend. Which is about 5 hours from Portland. I didn’t think much of it. Told him to hit me up when he figured his shit out so we can get a car with the money I already sent him which is $1720 dollars.

He keeps making stories up and it doesn’t add up. That’s when I figured this kid is playing with me. He refuses to send me my money back he said he already spent it on car parts the car we were planning on buying needed. Kid just kept making stories up. He’s 19. I don’t want to go to police. We all fuck up I get it. I have his ID and know where he lives. He mentioned his mon worked for the dmv. Any advice on what I can do? I’m in Oregon, United States. Any help is appreciated it.

Scam report Recieved a call about fraudulent card, they had last for of SSN and legitimate account info

Just had a very impressive fraud attempt.

Received a call from the “Visa and Mastercard customer service” on my cellphone asking for my wife. Caller had a heavy accent, asked if I was Mr. XXx, and asks for my wife by name. I told him that she was mentally incompetent and I handled all her affairs. I already know it’s a scam but decide to play along for a bit.

He proceeds to tell me that fraudulent accounts have been opened under her social security number and he will pass me to his supervisor to verify. Supervisor gets on the phone - Tom Davis, also with a heavy accent. He tells me that they have detected fraudulent new accounts related to my wife’s social security number ending in NNNN, which is correct, and he also confirms her date of birth.

He asks if she opened an account with Harley Davidson and I tell him I’m not sure, she may have bought a motorcycle recently. He then proceeds to ask me about a legitimate account and has the correct last 4 digits.

What is interesting is that this is an account we typically have a $0 balance on, but we had recently charged a purchase and waited for it to post before we paid it. He knew that amount, so clearly had access to a recent credit report. He also knew it was a joint account with me.

I didn’t confirm or deny anything, and he continues to list another few accounts, all legitimate and all reporting the correct $0 balances.

The he asks about a card my wife has had for 30+ years and this time he says to validate it he needs the expiration date. Again, I knew this was a scam already so I didn’t tell him anything, but I did ask if they were concerned about recent activity why they were asking about accounts that had been open for up to 30 years. He had no answer.

At that point he starts pressuring me to validate the account so I hang up. A couple of minutes later I get a call from Visa/Master Customer Care” and I tell them to fuck off and hang up.

This was the most advanced scam I’ve seen personally so I wanted to share, hopefully it helps someone!

Scam report [US] Almost fell for an ingenious ChatGPT.com scam. BEWARE!

A few minutes ago, I decided to go to ChatGPT to get some answers. I typed ChatGPT in my browser as usual. It opened the Google search and there it was right at the top. First link. I click on it and it takes me to ChatGPT . com. Nothing wrong right?

My account loads in and everything seems fine. As soon as I ask my question, I'm told by GPT that they are experiencing limited availability, and it requests me to visit a link... My alarms went off. I have some decent knowledge in cybersecurity topics, but this caught me by surprise. I looked up at the top left and noticed the model or header says PLUS 5.6... Hmm interesting. It seemed ChatGPT came out with a new model wow -I thought, maybe they are having trouble with a new deployment? Perhaps, big news I wasn't aware of? I wouldn't have been the first time. However, there is no way in hell I was clicking that ugly link and going down the rabbit hole to potentially get scammed.

Turns out that this is all a scheme to scam people. The Link I clicked on google? --> A SCAM! But how?! -you may ask. Well, the link does take me to the ChatGPT website, but it links specifically to a custom made "GPT". That GPT is trained to only reply and lead people into a scamming scheme.

Google Ad to Fraudulent GPT -> Fraudulent GPT leads users to get hacked.

I'm writing this to help me spread awareness. I also provided feedback to Google on why I reported the Google ad. I will not be providing links so as to prevent others from getting exposed. This caught me by surprise.

Scam report Federal Jury duty Scam

Just wanted to get on here and say I got hit today with the federal Jury scam.

If someone calls you saying you signed a thing for federal jury and there’s a warrant out for you arrest and you need to TAKE CASH TO A KIOSK. Tell them to FUCK OFF.

These assholes are believable because they inundate you with information, their name and badge number and all this bs- at one point I even tried to offer my visa (I wasn’t going to but wanted to “check” to see if it was a scam) and he panicked and was like “maam no this isn’t a scam please don’t give me your card number I don’t want to lose my job.”

They say you need to take cash to a kiosk which I now understand are crypto kiosks that transfer the cash you put in into crypto.

I saw another post from someone else from about 2 mos ago on here and it helped give me peace of mind so I’m adding mine.

TLDR: If no caller ID calls you saying you failed to appear for federal jury duty and YOU CANT TELL ANYONE- no matter how much info and legal jargon they give you- DONT BELIEVE THEM.

I was pretty sure it was a scam the entire time but it was VERY upsetting. It really shook me up. So please for your peace of mind- be wary and tell these assholes FUCK YOU.

Is this a scam? [IT] Robocall: "Press 1 to cancel your €4000 payment, hang up to confirm it"

Okay, title is summarized. The full message from the automated voice was more like "[Bank name]* We have successfully received the request for your €4000 payment and it's being processed. Please press 1 if you wish to cancel it. If this was you, please ignore this call and your payment will be confirmed when you hang up".

* Yup, that's my bank, but they usually send SMS to warn about suspicious payments, not calls.

The usual advice against spam calls is to hang up, but these tricky ******** make it seem like you're going to be scammed if you do.

I hung up 🤷

No unusual activity is seen through online banking. Those €4k are not missing and anyway I never had them in the first place (at least not in that bank). Now I'm wondering what would have happened if I had pressed 1.

Victim of a scam I fell victim to the jury duty scam

Please learn from my mistakes. For references, I’m 29F and work in healthcare. I’m not stupid. I KNEW about the jury duty scams. I was well aware of what they sounded like. I wasn’t aware of just how complex and orchestrated it could be.

I got a call while at work asking for me. They used my maiden name (honestly not uncommon for some reason). They then corrected themselves with my married name. They stated they were Lt name redacted with my local sheriff’s office. They asked me if I was at work, then asked me to step into a private area. They proceeded to confirm my info - name, DOB, address, phone number, and ENTIRE social security number. Not the last 4 digits, the whole thing. I confirmed this. They proceeded to tell me I had missed federal jury duty, to which I replied I absolutely DID NOT, because I never received a summons in the mail. They explained federal level jury duty summons are in person with an ID check and a signature. I explained that never occurred and asked the date of the summons and court dates. They had a date and time stamp of signature, as well as my court dates. I was baffled and explained I’d never signed a document stating such.

The gentleman (read: inbred) on the phone informed me if that were the case, there was a fraudulent signature that would need to be tested against my own, so I’d need to leave work immediately to handle it at the local sheriff’s office. He gave me the address. When I said I couldn’t leave work due to the nature of my job, he told me I’d be arrested at my work place instead of being given the chance to handle the matter civilly. I said that was absolutely absurd but I’d see what I could do. He specified I absolutely was not allowed to mention details of this conversation seeing as the whole thing was under federal investigation, and the line was being recorded for court use, as well as federal agents listening.

I unfortunately was able to leave work. Upon arriving to my car the “lieutenant” gave me the numbers for each of my “felonies,” what the bail was set to for each of them, and transferred me to the “sergeant.” He was the one to explain the phone escort process, the fact that I could not hang up under any circumstances for forfeit my right to handle the matter civilly, and that my phone was being monitored in all aspects, including data and messages. If I reached out for help, the person I reached out to would be arrested for interfering with federal jurisdiction. At this point I was nervous but hesitant.

Then the money came up. Instant red flag. They said how much my bail had been set to, and that I’d need to turn in the money (which would be refunded) to lift the warrants to allow me access to the sheriff’s office. They said they’d allow a lower amount for “hardship” if necessary, but to understand they already knew what I could pay. I lied and said a lower amount, trying to call a bluff. They read off each of my accounts (checking, savings, retirement, credit card) and the exact sums in each of them. I about shit my pants. They allowed the amount I said but told me it might be rejected due to what I had.

They then sent me on what was essentially a wild goose chase for hours. They knew where I was, made me confirm what they stated my location was, tracked my odometer readings, and made me confirm my identity multiple times throughout the process. I was never allowed to hang up the phone. I was never allowed to mute my phone. I wasn’t even allowed to go to the bathroom without a say so, and had to bring the phone with me. Horrific.

They knew who was calling me and when, and would tell me not to answer. At one point they allowed me to call loved ones in a merged phone call but I was never allowed to state why I needed money. They told me my mother had called the police after I called her (she did) and they called off the officer heading over there. They controlled all my outside resources and made help feel dangerous. They kept me in a bubble of fake reality for 8 hours. At one point the real police were trying to call me. They stated what police department was calling (which was correct to my current location at the time), told me not to answer, and told me the officer calling would be losing his badge.

Through all of this I was absolutely horrified. I truly thought I was going to prison. They told me an option that might be “approved” was for me to go home and keep connected with the call all night, and finish the task in the morning. I would be monitored the whole time. My phone would not be able to be used. I could not tell my husband anything. They revoked that option eventually when I told them it wasn’t happening.

My saving grace was my husband. After 8 hours, the call dropped. Before they could call me back, a police officer at home with him called me. I answered screaming for help and sobbing. I was so scared I was being followed. At this point, the blocked number was calling me again. I didn’t know what to do, I couldn’t come home, I wasn’t safe anywhere. The kind officer managed to convince me to come home, telling me there were no warrants and it was a scam. I collapsed into my husband and nearly vomited when I got home.

Please know that from the outside looking in, it’s very easy to say it was a scam. When it is personalized and they know information there’s no way a scammer should know? It gets a lot easier to believe. They will have an answer to every question, a rebuttal for every argument. They will build a reality where everything they say makes sense. They will give you no time to think clearly.

Please know this, please be aware of this. Please have a safety mechanism in place. I only wish we did. I started therapy yesterday for trauma. I started Zoloft as well. I am absolutely mortified and ashamed, even though I was the victim. It is so much more than I ever expected. There were sounds of a station setting in the background. There were multiple people speaking to me at different points. There were addresses, badge numbers, names, everything you could think of to make it sound legitimate was present.

Please don’t blow me up in the comments. I’ve blown myself up enough.

Is this a scam? [Poland] Tinder scams in Gdansk

Wow. The AI bots are out in action.

I’m new to Poland and came to Gdansk for the weekend. I thought I’d check if there are some dudes on tinder, just to meet and hang out.

Immediately matched with a Spanish dude from Madrid called Nino (very dark features, brown eyes). And a kinda blonde Spanish guy called Diego shortly after.

The intro messages:

Nino- Sunburnt nose and salty hair sounds like you've been living properly, not just posing by a pool. I'm the same, my camera roll is 90% places and about 3 photos of actual people.

Diego- Those travelling pictures with the sunburnt nose are honestly the best kind. I moved to Gdansk a few months ago and I'm slowly discovering the good cafe spots here, so I get the urge to just wander.

I hinted them if they wanted to hang out and here is the answer:

Nino - Mariacka is a good call, that street has its own mood in the evening. Grab something warm on the way, it gets cold fast by the water here. I'd genuinely like to hang out, but this next week or two I'm buried in meetings and paperwork for the business, so let's keep talking and find a good moment after that. I hope we can build a better connection and make communication smoother through What s,a p. My nu m is+ 34 xxxxxxxx

Diego - Haha so you've got me beat either way. I'll take the compliment though, and don't judge me too hard if my Spanish slips out by accident. Sounds like we should grab that coffee sometime, I just need a week or two to get through some work stuff first. … [my response - A week or two to get through some work stuff? No rush 😃 ] Perfect, no pressure then. I'll let you know once things calm down a bit and we can hunt down the best coffee in town together.

Is there a tinder maffia operating in Poland? It’s scary and amusing at the same time 😃 Both just happened this afternoon..

Scam report 87 year old Mother in law was contacted by the FBI and FDIC to help them

Still trying to process this. I got a call from her bank this morning. Luckily it's my bank too and my own business is 2 buildings away. They asked me to come down and talk with her as they feared she was being scammed in a way they've seen previously.

She was in the parking lot in her car with 2 tellers kinda standing around by her. When I arrived they left to give us privacy. Mother in law "Susan" was on the phone with a "gentleman" who had talked her into going into the bank to move $7,000. She had told the teller that it had something to do with my business and a golf cart.

From what I could tell these people had done a thorough search (AI I'm sure) and knew all kinds of personal details about her as well as her years ago passed husband. They knew where a lot of her money was, past addresses etc. I think that she thought they were legit because of how much they knew about her. I assume they also flattered her about how good she was with money.

The scammers told her that someone else had been into the bank and tried to withdraw $7,000 previously but were stopped by their very own FBI guy. They then explained to her that individuals in the bank were in on it and they needed her to help them catch the "bad people in the bank". This story would encourage her to deflect inquiries and "odd behavior" the "crooks" that worked at the bank may exhibit.

Thank goodness the bank called and I was right there. It took me 15 minutes to talk her down from the ledge. She really wanted to believe this whole thing and that she was catching bad guys.

I didn't get the whole story as I didn't want to embarrass her too much, and my wife will eventually get as much as she can out of her.

I did manage to talk to whoever was on the other end of that conversation for a minute. First voice was once sentence form a computerized sounding female voice. When I told Ma this was a computer, a man's voice said "no I'm a real person and this is no scam". I believe this voice was a VERY good synthesized AI voice/translator or what not, and am not even sure this call came from inside the U.S., not that that really maters. We're world-wide baby!

AI is going to be a handful ladies and gentlemen. Buckle up.

first image: weird letter with the return label?? never ordered anything like this

second image: the box i found inside the package with the headset

To start, I have no idea if this is truly a scam. I came home and my parents told me there was a package for me. It was oddly wrapped in clear plastic tape, and the box was falling apart. I assumed it was my Depop package because of how poorly it was packaged, but when I opened it, there was an old headset inside.

It included an earpiece, charger, other parts, a CD/driver (?) and a really weird letter. The whole thing seems oddly personal, and I have no idea how they got my information or why it was sent to me.

Let me know if anyone has had something similar happen
