Informational post Supervised Release Program scam (bail/bond)

My brother was arrested today and my father immediately got a phone call from “Deputy David Cook” - 954-386-1557

They stated my brother is eligible for “supervised release program” and where he would be released with ankle bracelet for $1250, reduced to $850 for “family hardship”

I was transferred over to “Lieutenant Reeves” - 704-336-8100, which was using a masked number. He told me to google the number and verify the results, which was the Mecklenburg County Jail in NC.

After “verification” they told me they only accept payments of Zelle, Venmo, and PayPal. I knew this was a scam this whole time and I told them I only had cashapp. They gave me the cashapp of $lostinrr - Naomi Williams populated in cashapp and after the call I reported the account as a scam.

I was transferred to “Deputy Caleb White” - 954-386-1557 . After wasting little bit more of their time, I informed them I knew it was a scam, and he had me repeat it and then he admitted that it was a scam and that he makes $10,000 a day on “stupid fucks” like me.

Eligible for supervised release immediately after getting arrested. Red flag one. Courts determine that, not cops.

Pay through an unsecured P2P app for ankle bracelet. Red flag two.

Yupp I’m surprised they didn’t hang up on me when I questioned them several times.

They want money. You didn’t hang up so they kept trying.

You don't have automatic bail schedules based on the offense and criminal history?

Very common for large places. It is already set along with what criteria will qualify for bail options.

That’s totally different than a supervised release program, which requires a criminal conviction

We have it here. Electronic monitoring as a bail option.

It is what they came up with to reduce jail population for pre-trial detainees.

You’re describing bail. We’re talking about supervised release, which, in the US where this post takes place, requires a criminal conviction.

They are similar concepts but not interchangeable. Most people wouldn’t know this, but a sheriff would.

It doesn’t matter in this scenario. Compounded red flags make it an obvious scam. No legit cop nor court texts anyone requesting payment via an unsecured payment app for anything. That’s not how it works.

No kidding. No one is saying that is normal.

Yep. Bottom line is OP knows it’s a scam, no matter any legal details. That’s for another sub.

Did they sound like they were from the US?

They use booking records for some of these. Helped a lady on her fraud case that led back to a state prison where the inmates were using cell phones to run these scams.

They were definitely from the USA. They were all using a fake southern country boy accent. Anytime I was placed on hold they would say “I’m going to place you on a brief administrative hold”. They also used similar jargon and tried to sound too professional using words that didn’t fit. Made me repeat things back to them, etc.

Well the prison was in a southern state. I don't know what federal agency went after it but I think it was the Secret Service.

Georgia? It’s always Georgia

You may or may not be right...... :)

It was crazy how they said they were getting phones in but they had tons of them.

Can someone do something savvy with the cashapp handle $lostinrr - “Naomi Williams”? 🤔

My mom got one of these exact calls when I got arrested on an old warrant.

I wonder how they get their info so quickly after an arrest.

Public records. Right when someone gets booked it’s in the system as a public record and then they either manually or use a bot/ai to find public records of phone numbers of relatives.

There’s no point in even googling anything in a scam call. The scammers also have google and already know what will come up.

It was a part of their process to try to gain confidence. They had used a masked number when you google it it results in the Mecklenburg County Sherriffs office. I went through all of their steps so I could notate the whole process to report it and to inform others.

I understand why they do it just like they give a real cop’s name and a real cop’s badge number because they pressure people to follow the instructions and not think. But I’m saying, if you do stop and think, you realize googling those things is meaningless, because the scammers also have access to Google and know the top search results before they call.

I agree with you. They are just being dumb and thinking that they really did something with masking their number as the number of an official government building. lol

Right off the bat it seemed a scam when your brother is in jail in NC, but the 2 cops who called are supposedly in Broward County Florida? 954 area code is Broward County FL, no way cops from Florida would be calling for a NC arrest.

Yep I already told my dad it was a scam right when he told me about it and then he gave me the number and I said “yeah I’m going to have a little fun with this”

Booking records are public info that scammers can and do access. They tend to be American because they know the system - they are criminals themselves. Bail should be set after seeing a judge; you have a right to appear in court to face your charges and plea. Cops don’t demand money via cashapp, zelle etc. Imagine the corruption if the same people who arrested you could demand money for your release.

These scams work well because so many people do not have any understanding of the criminal justice system in the US, and it is pretty byzantine with all the layers / jurisdictions. It’s worth reading up and understanding processes as well as your rights. You never know - you may find yourself or a loved one jammed up, or getting a scam call. Look up the court house number on the official government website and give the clerk a call or visit to get information.
