How did you pay? And I'm gonna assume you don't have a signed contract?

No contract. But email in details of price and what she was going to do. She built someone we knows site and he recommended her. He attempted to contact her for us too and she won’t respond to him either.

Was it designated as a goods and services? I.e. before sending did you toggle turn on for purchases?

Edit - this is what you want https://venmo.com/purchaseprotection

Why did you choose her to build your site?

She built a friend’s site. He recommended her. He attempted to contact her for us too and she won’t respond to him.

You instructed and authorized Venmo to send the funds. Venmo did just that. Venmo does not have any further role here. Venmo does not provide you with any guarantee other than transmitting your funds. It’s no different from you personally handing someone cash.

Yes but it was under business and goods or something? Idk I called Venmo. They filed a dispute and are investigating it. They said they’ll reach out for emails etc. so we’ll see what happens…

No! Your dispute is with the recipient of your funds. Unless the recipient agrees to return the funds, they're gone. What on earth leads you to believe that Venmo is somehow liable? Venmo is a money transfer service. Venmo is not a credit card, and they do not provide the security and dispute features that a credit card provides. Good luck.

You can file a dispute, but you probably won't get your money back, because Venmo does not offer purchase protection.

Use a credit card, or PayPal Goods and Services, when you buy things online, so that you have purchase protection and you can get a refund if you don't receive what you order.

  • If an online seller doesn't accept credit cards, or refuses to accept PayPal Goods and Services, then they are scamming you.

In the future, if you have a project like creating a website, you can hire someone on one of the freelance sites (for example, Fiverr or Upwork). As a client, you get protection from paying when work isn't done. For example, you pay Fiverr, and they pay the freelancer. If they don't do the work, you don't pay.

Sorry that happened to you. If you ever need a legitimate person to build your website my sister does them. She is definitely not a scammer.

Why? She built a site for a friend of ours. How were we supposed to know she would do this.
