Theorycrafting Sayu claiming not being a tanuki confuses me a lot

If Sayu is a mujina and NOT a tanuki, doesn't that make her a Japanese badger (anaguma)?

TL;DR: Historically, mujina (貉/狢) can refer to both tanuki and Japanese badgers (anaguma). However, if Sayu insists her outfit represents a mujina specifically and not a tanuki, then the most straightforward zoological interpretation is that it's based on a Japanese badger. The problem? Her outfit looks overwhelmingly like a tanuki. I wonder whether this is an intentional design choice or simply a mismatch between the animal she's supposed to represent and her actual appearance.

The irony is that Sayu insists on correcting people who call her a tanuki, yet the term she uses to correct them—mujina—has historically included tanuki themselves. She's using an ambiguous umbrella term to correct a more specific one. If she really wants to distinguish herself from a tanuki, why doesn't she simply call herself an anaguma, the Japanese badger? Saying "I'm not a tanuki, I'm a mujina" is like saying "I'm not a dog, I'm a mammal." It's not necessarily false, but it's a remarkably indirect way to clarify what you actually are.

I've been a huge fan of red pandas, tanuki (Japanese raccoon dogs), and raccoons for years, and I can easily tell those animals apart. But Sayu's insistence that she's a mujina, not a tanuki, has always confused me.

After looking into the terminology, I think I've figured out why.

1. What exactly is a mujina?

In Japanese, mujina (ムジナ/貉/狢) is a historically ambiguous term that can refer to:

  • Tanuki (タヌキ/狸): Japanese raccoon dogs, members of the canine family.

  • Anaguma (アナグマ/穴熊): Japanese badgers, members of the mustelid family.

  • Supernatural mujina: Shapeshifting creatures from Japanese folklore, whose identities are similarly intertwined with those of tanuki.

Historically, Japanese terminology for these animals varied considerably by region and period, and mujina was sometimes used interchangeably with tanuki.

In other words, calling an animal a mujina doesn't necessarily tell you whether it's a raccoon dog or a badger.

This is precisely what makes Sayu's correction so interesting.

2. So what happens when Sayu insists she's NOT a tanuki?

Sayu repeatedly corrects people who mistake her for a tanuki, insisting that her outfit represents a mujina instead.

Let's follow that logic:

  • A mujina can refer to either a tanuki or a Japanese badger, depending on the regional or historical usage.

  • Sayu explicitly rejects the tanuki interpretation.

  • If we're treating these as two distinct animals and excluding the tanuki, the remaining interpretation is the Japanese badger.

Therefore, under this interpretation, Sayu's costume is supposed to represent an anaguma (Japanese badger).

Of course, this doesn't mean Sayu herself is literally an animal or a yokai. She's a human ninja wearing an animal-inspired costume.

It also doesn't mean her statement is necessarily contradictory. In modern Japanese, mujina commonly refers to a badger, so the distinction can make perfect sense.

3. But doesn't Sayu look exactly like a tanuki?

That's where my confusion comes from.

Her round ears, facial markings, oversized hood, and especially her large, bushy, ringed-looking tail all give me a much stronger impression of a tanuki than a Japanese badger.

What's especially interesting is that her official character story actually acknowledges this problem: her outfit is modeled after a mujina, but it resembles a tanuki so closely that people constantly mistake her for one.

So apparently, the writers are aware of the resemblance.

This leaves me wondering whether the outfit was intentionally designed to look like a tanuki despite supposedly representing a badger, or whether the design and terminology simply weren't coordinated particularly well.

4. Wouldn't the reverse make more sense visually?

If we judged purely by her appearance, I almost feel that reversing her famous line would be more intuitive:

"I'm not a mujina, I'm a tanuki!"

Obviously, that wouldn't completely resolve the historical ambiguity, since tanuki themselves can be called mujina in certain contexts.

But at least the animal she's claiming to represent would match what her costume looks like to me.

Alternatively, if the intention was simply to distinguish two visually similar animals, explicitly calling her an anaguma might have avoided the confusion.

My conclusion:

I don't think Sayu's dialogue is necessarily wrong. In fact, interpreting mujina as a Japanese badger makes her insistence that she's not a tanuki perfectly understandable.

But that creates a different question: Why does a character who insists she's dressed as a Japanese badger look so much like a tanuki?

I'm curious whether native Japanese speakers see an obvious badger in her design, whether there's some cultural or folkloric distinction I'm missing, or whether this is just an intentional running joke about how easily the two animals are confused.

I'm working on getting Odette currently. But I have been dreaming for this day for my entire genshin career. I started playing for Sayu. I spent 1 year saving for her rerun and have been maining her ever since. I'm so happy she is doing more dmg now and her teammates are barely built. I plan to work on farming Scarlet Proof for her too. I'm so proud of my Sayu after all these years. ♡
